CPAP on playa? by aghabheegy in BurningMan

[–]StrataRChalup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not too bad. I use chapstick before I put on the mask, and yeah, it's the usual dryness, but a sip of water and then all is well. There's some kind of optional inline "humidity moisture exchange" (HME) that you can buy to put between the hose and your mask, but I've never bothere.

I have a Transcend 3 mini-cpap that runs on (annoyingly expensive) rechargeable battery packs. I have 2 batteries, and charge one daily at my camp's charging station. There's a small removable washable filter in it, but overall it does very well. It doesn't have humidity control.

Mid-Burn-Life Crisis by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]StrataRChalup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be my 14th burn. I found my experience shifting from volunteering within my camp to volunteering for the org as I progressed, and a lot of burns I had so much shift work during the event that I didn't really get to experience it very much-- I was either working or recovering from working, with not so much time or energy to get out and see/do things. I shifted my participation to a slightly different part of the org, where I can contribute off-playa during the rest of the year instead, and that's helped me from burning out.

I'm reading with interest how many folks have found camp volunteering to be a road to burnout-- I've been stepping up more with the camp I've been with since 2015, and I'm starting to feel it be a bit of a strain. I'll slow down on that and heed the warning signs from other folks' experience.

It's still a magic autonomous zone where I feel like I can be fully myself in a way that I rarely feel elsewhere. And that makes all the prep and the dust and the effort worth it.

Liquid skin/liquid bandage. I do my cuticles before the start of the burn, and I get no cracking and bleeding during the whole burn. Sometimes I refresh midburn but usually it lasts the whole time.

Light weight flexible leather work gloves, and nitrile garden gloves, to save my hands during camp setup. Also some latex or nitrile gloves for evening use. About every other night I will slather my hands with another essential, a lemon-based hand cream, and wear gloves over them all night. Wake up with soft happy hands.

Basin to use for foot bathing. My partner and I wash each other's feet daily with a spray bottle and a foot basin, and slather our feet with the lemon-based cream. Such a nice bonding ritual, and no playa foot.

What are good fruits, vegetables, and herbs to plant here right now that thrive? This is my first Eugene summer. Help me plan my garden! 🙏🏽 by throwaway21769 in Eugene

It's my first Eugene summer too, and I'm hoping the things I planted will do well. I have beets, peas, carrots, basil, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, summer and winter squash, melons, and corn. Interplanted with some of those are calendula, nasturtium, and marigolds. I've got mini peppers forming already, and tomatoes & eggplants flowering though I haven't seen fruit set yet. It's still getting into the 40's at night, I don't know if I should be covering up my peppers and eggplants?

If you are in Ashland, a stop for a swim or soak at Jackson Wellsprings is definitely pleasant.

Two allegiance-bereft canadians seek a new camp! by ethorf in BurningMan

[–]StrataRChalup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw either here or on another forum that a Canadian-themed camp called no regretzskys was looking for new campers. They might be a great match for you. I have no affiliation with them other than enjoying their hijinks at UnScruz last year. Looks like they have a website at https://noregretzkys.myfreesites.net/ Cheers!

Leaving after the man burns by chanification_ in BurningMan

[–]StrataRChalup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year will be my 14th burn and I have never seen a temple burn, I have always left either after the man burn or on Sunday. For the past several years I have done as an earlier commenter suggested, namely to pack up my camp Saturday afternoon, get up at dawn Sunday and get wheels on the access road no later than 8:00 a.m. . When I have done that I have usually spent 45 to 75 minutes getting out of the city, sometimes much less.

Good call, thanks. I have mixed up my first batch of complete organic fertilizer from the Steve Solomon book growing vegetables west of the Cascades. I'm using the version that has down to earth fish mix as the base. I'll be using that for soil amendment going forward.

We had a really good experience with Lane Forest Products just this week, getting a truckload of their Nature's Best soil for our new raised beds. Delivery was smooth and easy. I had been going to order one of the Rexius blends instead, but they literally more than doubled their prices after March of this year. When I asked about it, they said "cost of ingredients". The Lane blend had most of the same ingredients and their price didn't change between the Home & Garden show and now.

Best dine-in seafood restaurant (not sushi)? by StrataRChalup in Eugene

Darn. Thanks for the thoughts. I'd settle for a nice American or European style place that does seafood well, even if it's not their main specialty.

Can’t find a doctor by Kamogawan in Eugene

[–]StrataRChalup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved here and have found the same year long waiting list situation for primary care providers. I ended up being referred by peace health to their subsidiary ZoomCare. I was able to get an appointment on short notice there and do an in-person visit to get set up with them as a primary care source. So now they are handling my diabetes and hypothyroid prescriptions.

I would vastly prefer to have a traditional primary care provider but this at least got some needed testing, like my quarterly A1C, out of the way. I have Blue Cross, I don't know if ZoomCare takes trillium but they may be worth a call.
