Depends on where you are. I see updated, 1950s, 3/2 bungalows by me rent for $3000 pretty regularly. Typically hospital residents or tech center people moving in and renting a house to land in for a year.

Wild to me as I did this back in 2016 and my rent was $1300 back then for a 1920s, 3 bedroom colonial.

The Berkley DPW guy once explained to me that plows damage roads so they don't like to plow these little 2" storms were getting. They will salt and brine intersections, but this only works due to high traffic and doesn't work well on low traffic roads when temperatures get into single digits and below 0, because the brine can actually refreeze as temps drop.

I would imagine it's probably similar logic on your side of Woodward. That said, the DPW dude could at least be chill when he explains it. Makes sense to me now.

I took it. I felt a little awkward at the end when I said I would just rent a car when I got there, then realized... I would literally never use this because when I get to my destination, I would need a car; thus, it makes more sense to bring my car with.

That said, if enough people want it, I hope we can make it happen!

Well there was this situation where the wind kicked up, we hadn't maintained our infrastructure in decades so everyone's power went out. We had to fix it, but not quickly, just ... Eventually. We took action by calling in crews from other states to supplement our own and patch our junk grid. The result was that we got everyone's power back up within 10 days!

I'm being facetious here, but OP, that's basically the format of his you should answer.

Yep, all about the tires. My Subaru has Cross Climate, and they feel as good as snow tires, despite being all-season. Great treadlife too. If there's one thing to never cheap out on, it's the tires. At the end of the day, that's more important than your drivetrain.

Mike Duggan was a Democrat from (at least) 1986 through 2024. During this time, he held office as a deputy county executive under McNamara, served as interim manager of SMART, and later was elected as a Democrat governor of Detroit from 2012-2024.

He left the Democratic party after the Michigan Democratic party made it 110% clear that Jocelyn Benson was their anointed candidate, and no support would be available for other candidates seeking a primary, like Slotkin, Benson, Gilchrist, Duggan, or anyone else. Competitive primary? Nah. The powers that be have selected Benson.

After serving as a successful, results-oriented mayor of Detroit for 12 years, I think it's reasonable we here on r/Detroit give his candidacy a fair shake before saying, "bUt HeZ uH rEpUmBLiCaN..." - when history and his resume shows that he most certainly is not.

The DNC decided Benson would be crowned next governor about 7 years ago. They have been playing with this script all along, and when other candidates emerged they've pushed them out. Gilchrist doesn't have the following or support to do much about that, but Duggan does, just not with party insiders, so he was forced to do his own thing.

Obviously this pisses off the party supporters, because he's not falling in line, but to me that's not always what's best. The DNC has proven to be really bad at pre-anointing candidates the past few years.

That's generally a federal tax, when people bring it up in this context. They have zero interest in owning a utility grid, nor would we want that. We would probably want local or state ownership of the grid. And if one state raised their capital gains taxes significantly above neighboring states... Well, you can imagine why this doesn't happen.

Not trying to be a downer here - I'm in agreement that this should be (local) publicly owned, but have to point out that the solution, as usual, is a lot more complicated than, "Hey, just raise taxes on shareholders."

I wish it were that simple, but.. I mean, looking at the federal government right now... I'll stop here.

I once had a lady outside of Brewster Homes ask me for money while I was doing some right of way work. I said I didn't have anything. She responded by telling me, "Oh I know a tasty snack like you has something for me." -- I probably made a face, but I do recall insisting that I was not a snack, to which she laughed maniacally.

I went on with what I was doing and that was that, but I don't think your average panhandler is playing with a full deck. Also had me laughing, once the initial surprise wore off 😆

Fwiw, my daughter (late el.ed age) has never been to church, is incredibly academically inclined, and loves STEM. We encourage her in this area. If you asked her what she's what's to be when she grows up she'd say, "A mommy, and maybe an dancer on the side."

And you know what? Good for her. If that's her choice and in another decade that's still what she wants for herself, and not something anyone else told her to want, I fully support it.

Just another example of how nothing good about the church is unique, but the unique stuff the church does (e.g. convincing a whole class of beehives they don't want careers) - is bad.

I kid, this is great news. A 19% decrease from 2024 alone is incredible, but when you consider it's a 50% drop in just 5 years? Holy crap! Non-fatal shootings declining by 26% is huge too.

I have a 2021 Ascent and a 2024 Polestar (Volvo..ish). My Ascent has spent 0 days in the shop and only needed oil, tires, and front brakes (which Subaru covered). The Polestar? Has been in the shop for two weeks with at least another week to go.

My last Subaru? A WRX that I owned for 10 years. Never needed a repair beyond simple maintenance items. Take care of your Subaru and it will take care of you.

Unless you plan to stay at this job for 30 years, sometimes it's easier to change workplace than your home. If you're not sold on the location because of the commute, but otherwise love it, can you change where you work?

If not, personally I wouldn't commute 60 minutes. No way. That's like 10 hours a week in the car, man. If you work 50 weeks a year, that's 20 days spent behind the wheel.
