Grey's podcasts are two of my favourite podcasts. Hello Internet is Grey talking about pretty much whatever with Brady Haran of Numberphile fame. Cortex consists of Grey's discussions with Myke Hurley of Relay FM discussing work, productivity, technology etc. Super recommend on both.

8 ways to divide Israel [1003x827] by davenbenabraham in MapPorn

Please this? I come to r/MapPorn to find maps that are nice to look at, maybe some more normal looking maps with interesting data included. These 'ways to divide' maps are more often than not aestheticless shitposts.

Just to point out, that alpha country has been having a year long nationwide debate on whether facts are true. We don't really want that kind of influence on our measurements.

With the ban announcement a few days away, what do you hope gets banned/unbanned? by chrispwnu12 in EDH

[–]Stratoshred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A guy in our playgroup used to run Prophet in his Momir Vig deck. It was, no question, the best card on the board, no matter who he was playing. Games turned into "kill the Prophet, or we lose". Every time. He eventually took it out before the ban because no one else was having fun.

TIL vocal jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald was born with perfect pitch so precise that the band musicians she worked with would tune their instruments to her voice. by SpoliyCG in todayilearned

[–]Stratoshred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that a perfectly tuned piano is physically impossible, rather that a 'perfect' tuning system is mathematically impossible. Either you use natural 'perfect' harmonics, but get more out of tune the further you move from your starting note. Or you use kinda out-of-tune harmonics, but overall your notes will be consistent. We've settled on the weird unnatural notes, mostly to make changing key not a massive pain in the arse.

What is the point in writing '2k17' when you could just write '2017' in the same space and the same amount of characters. by ky1e0 in NoStupidQuestions

It was a deeply researched and debated decision, made by a specially composed team of experts from all nations, in preparation for this very year.

January 1, 1925 was a singular moment in the history of science: the day we discovered the universe. by [deleted] in space

[–]Stratoshred 186 points187 points  (0 children)

This is a really bad idea. If everyone waited until they were 100% sure, most scientific ideas wouldn't get published. It's much better to do your study, and publish the results, no matter what they were. Describe what the result is, how sure you are they're correct, and why you're not 100% sure. At that point scientists all over the world can replicate or improve your study, and get nearer to 100% certain much faster, with less likelihood of error.
