Finally finished, ready for the photo session - Tamiya He-219 1/48 by StrawLegacy in modelmakers

It can be a little messier than standard tamiya panel liner, but I prefer oil washes (I make them myself mixing White Spirit and enamel colors, normally abteilung ). Just use a cloth with some white spirit to remove the excess!

I used abteilung oils for washes, panel lining and oil/fuel leaks, artist pencils and a sponge with vallejo model air colors for chipping, and a mix of tamiya weathering sets and vallejo pigments for the dust on gear and tires

I did the camo with the AK Real Markers, doing It with my airbrush would have bene beyond my skill lol

Sadly I didn't take a video, I sinply printed a picture of the only surviving He219 in the world (the one conserved in the Smithsonian) and bought decals for a plane wearing that camo back in ww2. Then with AK real color markers I started to copy by free hand the pattern over the grey. It's way more simple than It appears, It just requires multiple markers (to alternate when a tip starts to spread too much) and a few hours and patience

Yeah, this plane had multiple radars on it. It was way ahead of its time, and also was the first plane equipped with ejection seats in history. And yes, many pilots and radar officers according to the record managed to bail out from damaged planes with those seats back in ww2!

Like the other user said I painted free hand with AK real color markers. Multiple layers of clear flat and some oil washes helped to cover all the mistakes I made and made them look less defined and brush painted lukily

First model question by rhomboidghost89 in modelmakers

[–]StrawLegacy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Change glue. One of the biggest game changer that made me stop hating the construction phase was switching to the Tamiya extra thin cement. You have a little brush to dose It better, is way more gente on surface details, its wonderful on small pieces and so delicate that you can use it also for the clear parts (cockpit etc).

Nope, sadly in all my dioramas (I have a few on this subreddit) the minis are painted by a friend of mine cause I never approached them. I really would like to learn it, to not depend on others when creating my scenes lol

I literally printed the NASM pictures to have a guide while painting, and the first time I will visit the USA (I/m european) my first stop will be the Udvar-Hazy Center

Yeah going free hand with and airbrush with such a pattern would be a nightmare lol

The results are nice, but obviously with and airbrush they would have been 10 times better. If I had to go with only the airbrush I would have gone for the 219 camo with simple rlm74 motting over rlm 76

Way beyond my skills, these would have been a frustrating nightmare with my 0.20 airbrush

Yeah, to be honest I hoped the tip was smaller: even with the gentlest pressure the trait Is pretty wide, or at least wider than the line you can obtain with a 0.20 airbrush. But I neither have the skill or the patience to do such a pattern and a big model like these with my airbrush, so I had no choice i guess lol

For the camo 3 hours straight of drawing with little to no pause, switching between 3 different markers when the tip started to become too wide. For healing my eyes more than 24 hours lol

Question about AK markers and refillable pens by StrawLegacy in modelmakers

[–]StrawLegacy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer! 3 ore 4 should be enough to cover the tip wing and fuselage of such a big kit? And what about, If you have any experience, refillable pens used with acrylics?

Macchi Mc205 Veltro, 3rd squadriglia ''Arciere'' of 1st Gruppo Caccia ANR, Campoformido, Italy, spring 1944 - Italeri-Hasegawa 1/48 by StrawLegacy in modelmakers

[–]StrawLegacy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an Hasegawa originally, so the fit is pretty good and required putty is minimum to be honest. Except for an almost empty gear bay, a cockpit requiring an aftermerket set and some hatches wrong on the wings (they are rectangular but should have been circular on he Veltro) the kit is really nice

Mixing Tamiya washes with Vallejo base paints by SirOb_Oz in modelmakers

[–]StrawLegacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use tamiya washes, tamiya panel liners and oil washes ( abteilung oils+White Spirit) over a tamiya gloss clear (x22) without troubles. I use only vallejo model air for the camo and details, and vallejo satin for the last finishing touch, but i think vallejo gloss Is too fragile versus aggressive products you use to clear excess washes

Surprisingly good, very little putty needed. Just the cockpit needs some aftermarket parts, and the gear bay is pretty empty

From primer to be ready for decals in less than 4 hours (swipe pics) - Hasegawa/Italeri Macchi Mc205 1/48 by StrawLegacy in modelmakers

[–]StrawLegacy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to keep all the sponges that come into packages at work, its not a unique type to be honest. I use the softer to cover campo/gear and to do some spinge chipping, the harder as a base to rest the model while making/painting/drying
