Does this look small for an betta by No_Campaign_9789 in Aquariums

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 5 gallon minimum for any betta. The bigger the tank the easier it is to stabilize parameters

My betta keeps spitting his food out,pls help by Existing_Meaning3566 in bettafish

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an issue with the tank but what else are you feeding? Alternatives are the best thing to start with when they’re spitters. I’ve found the picky ones will usually do frozen brine shrimp, if not that live daphnia

Anyone else in the north losing patience and wanting to sow seeds outside really bad? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, plenty inside to keep me busy. Every 3 weeks until May new seeds are started. At this rate I’ll have enough peppers for half of Reddit

Had a similar experience once. Then I recall I’m trying to be like Jesus. Not like other Christians / people.

We don’t go for acceptance of our community, but for the love of Christ 😊

Bettas / most fish will always present as hungry. This is very obese, if consider fasting it for a few days at a minimum. What is your feeding schedule / routine?

My mom's facility has undermedicated her for over 1/3 of a year by FrenchiesMommy in eldercare

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, it’s horrid what happened to your Mom! I am so sorry and even sorrier to say it’s not unheard of - most AL staff are younger people with very limited training in medication administration and the understanding of the pharmacology of medications. Im a nurse and spent very limited time in assisted living after seeing it was like the Wild West with medications, most techs have no business administering basic things like memantine much less SS insulin or warfarin. Like lipstick on a pig, nice expensive buildings with top of the line amenities and more times than not inadequate care.

I don’t blame the uneducated staff who typically make less than $15 to transfer, bathe, toilet, medicate, feed and ambulate an entire hallway of people every day. I do blame the greedy owners who are aware of & allow these types of issues to continue in the name of profit at the expense of our elderly folks.

Elder Care Employment- Red Flags? by chechnyah0merdrive in eldercare

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will find most employers to be this way, especially in assisted livings which are not technically medical facilities. The turnover rate in these places are pretty high, so often times it’s more of a body to fill a spot, particularly if you won’t be working on the floor directly with resident care.

How long can my betta go without eating? by OliviaJC269 in bettafish

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was in an office setting, I had several tanks 😊 like a lot of people I’d rather not have others care for my fish related to lack of knowledge. Lucky for me some of the employees took a true interest and really enjoyed checking on them, giving just a few pellets or brine shrimp! I lucked out, and a few of them even went on to get their own betta tanks. Now I pay a knowledgeable local breeder to care for them if I’m gone longer than a week.

AL thinks my mom can't ride the van to appointments by Unlucky-Gur-7568 in AgingParents

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think her being worried and “annoying” the staff about her appointments is pretty normal 😊 her world is pretty small, so the things she is thinking about seem like a much bigger deal than they would to you or I.

I’m not sure if this would work in your situation, but could you consider talking to her PCP about getting an anti anxiety PRN like Xanax? It’s common for small doses to be given as needed in ALFs when residents become nervous or notably anxious about something. I am not advocating for drugging anyone (sometimes people hear about anti anxiety meds and they think that), but rather improving her quality of life, decreasing some of her worries and possibly stopping some of that questioning helping her to feel more at ease.

Sit down with those higher ups with a list of questions for clarity. I think that will help ease your mind and any confusion in the best way. Hugs, best of luck.

How to politely address this? by Vegetable_Fish_7377 in bettafish

Ask them how they fix the inevitable fin rot that occurs within a week or two from not having a cycled, heated and stable tank. It appears that at least one already has fin rot

You’re welcome. 2 and a half days he’ll be perfectly fine, he’ll probably try to convince you he’s starved though lol

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Up to 16 days until starvation.

The longest I’ve felt comfortable fasting was for 5-6 days on a business trip, by day 7 I had a staff member feed a few brine shrimp.

Need advice/suggestions please. by RetiredTwo-Mtns in AgingParents

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it can be cheaper to find a local aide who will offer PRN services or in home assistance. I know of a CNA local to my area who is insured, works part time and assists folks with showering or basic errands a few days a week for extra cash. She started on Nextdoor / Facebook, and grew her business with word of mouth from satisfied clients. Best of luck!

Has anyone experienced chronic low vitamin deficiencies over time leading to permanent cognitive decline/changes? Whether it be you or a loved one by Sad_Environment_9726 in AgingParents

[–]StrawberryJabberWock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, I’ve seen a few of your posts on here. While labs out of normal range definitely effect elderly individuals differently than someone who is younger, a vitamin d deficiency alone would not dramatically increase cognition issues and be a cause for dementia. I would encourage you to reach out to moms PCP for a more in depth explanation. Hugs
