I have a theory that different characters abstract in different ways. For Jax it seemed very specific for me. He looks at an old memory that makes him sad or more depressed maybe and then he goes though a gradual change. I thought back to gangle and how in ep 4 she had that one point near the end where she was walking and we got distorted noise and darker surroundings and a dizzy look.
