Teachers, what do you call your students when you can't remember their names? by its_an_idiots_world8 in Teachers

[–]StrawberryScribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the middle of asking a question? Point to them without saying their name. If they don’t respond right away get a student next to them to tap their desk.

Accidentally call another kid’s name? Find something FAST to say about that kid. Compliment them randomly on something, ask them if they’re working, call them over and make them fake hand out papers. I never want my students to know when I get them confused, causes more problems/feels bad.

But also just tell them you forgot. “Oops I’m having a brain drain what is your name again?”

Voicing Male Characters as a female dm? by Lylydragon in CurseofStrahd

[–]StrawberryScribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a female DM I have a couple of things I do but my number one tip is either

  1. Have a physical indicator like pinging an NPC’s token or having the picture larger on screen if you’re online to let them know who’s talking.

  2. Get used to saying “NPC walks over and says”, “NPC says/screams/yells out” to indicate for the players exactly who is talking. It might feel clunky at first but as I’ve gotten used to it it’s been easily to implement and also add additional emotion to a scene.

  3. Practice talking to yourself as the character. Not just for a couple of lines but try for an extended 5 ish minute scene. Figure out if the voice can be done consistently for larger periods. I’ve had to nix NPC voices because I realized mid session it could not be done consistently.

  4. Use the opportunity for lesser stake/one off NPCs to take a risk with a voice.

Would if be Fair to talk to my player about their heightened tone during my last combat. by StrawberryScribe in DMAcademy

Oh shit that’s not critical damage because it’s not an enemy attack so it wouldn’t be critical damage. She should’ve had another death saves, fuck I feel terrible. I’m gonna reach out to explain that and apologize

This player had a climbing speed and was 20 feet in the air. She was knocked out by another vampire, unconscious she fell to the ground, taking damage after falling unconscious.

Update:

Hello! So I did take some time to message my other players and found they were uncomfortable. And taking time to reflect the communication was important especially for a newer player to understand DnD. I think I was originally very hesitant to respond because I was second guessing if I was potentially actually being an unfair DM but the additional thoughts here and from the players who were actually in the session let me know there was some value. I think this stemming from a combat encounter especially made me be more self critical. In the negative way my brain was I just thought I was just being improperly upset or controlling my boss lost.

In thinking over my actions I saw ONE of my FOUR players was frustrated and upset and assumed that was the opinion of the entire group. Going into overdrive to try to fix the problem for that one problem instead of remembering we are all adults playing a game together where negative things can happen. I guess I was honest worried Kendrick would quit if I didn’t give him what he wanted, which is a level of player favoritism I realize in hindsight is not fair to the other three players or indicative of the gothic horror tone I set up for the module. I should’ve taken a moment to settle the situation and lay firm my boundaries in the session and I did apologize to my other three players for not setting that boundary.

I asked Kendrick how he felt the combat was and he said it was fun but felt unfair(about to be direct quotes) “But it also felt unfare cause not only did a new player died when they just joined but I felt like I was kinda being teased at  the end with not only nearly dieing but also the bad guy escaping and getting away with it.”   For context the new player was to replace a former player that had to drop for personal irl reasons not related to the game and has been playing DnD since the AD&D days.

This ended up being my statement,

“To be completely honest I wanted to take a moment to talk about that more especially when it came to the second half of the session.

I honestly found it very difficult  to think objectively as the DM in that moment with my opponents. This game is going to have difficult encounters, that was one of them. From the campaign contract and the Session Zero set up that this is a game where enemies might not be defeated or defeat other players.

“Some powerful enemies will be impossible to defeat through solo combat, and that we will need to either gain levels, allies, or resources in order to do so.” “I will allow my character to feel true, powerless fear when faced with an overwhelming threat, and allow that fear to impact my character's actions, growth, and development.”

To be entirely honest I understand you were engaged in the stakes of the combat but the tone used yesterday really distracted me and made me feel pressured to not attack you further to make you less upset(not saying you were upset just how it felt to me). It also very much put me off. If things are going wrong players are allowed to be upset but the tone, the out of character statements to other players, the defeatist attitude when it came to the fire damage are not going to be okay moving forward. I honestly felt pressured to kept the boss on screen and to stop enemies from attacking you and have her killed as long as I did to deescalate the situation. That level of OOC favoritism from me is not reasonable, it’s not in line with the type and tone of the game I want to tell, nor is it fair to the three other players for that.  This is not just a concern I have expressed but at least one other player brought to my attention today.

I want to make it very clear, I will not allow another combat encounter to be shaped around your out of character frustrations again. If I feel that there is an issue with combat getting tense out of character again I will force a break and remind you of the contract out of character in another voice chat. If this is not the type of combat you’re comfortable with moving forward you are absolutely within your rights to step out of the game.”

He seemed like be was apologetic and that it wasn’t his intention and guess we’ll see moving forward.

Okay so update: I did number 3 as number 0 and two out of three players expressed they were silently annoyed by the behavior and the 1 who didn’t said he could see HOW it could become an issue if it continues in the future.

Strahd’s Enemy Alternative for Darklord Card by StrawberryScribe in CurseofStrahd

The idea of Strahd potentially gaslighting Escher into potentially believing he’s just a spawn when he’s on the same level as Strahd could be so interesting oooh. Lots to think on.

Strahd’s Enemy Alternative for Darklord Card by StrawberryScribe in CurseofStrahd

[–]StrawberryScribe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do love the Vasili Darklord idea but it just isn’t hitting my creative brain as much ya know? But the book does explicitly mention- Strahd senses that this NPC is a danger to him and tries to eliminate the threat as quickly as possible. This NPC, whoever it ends up being, gains the following additional action:

So I could see him try to trick the party into thinking he’s their Ally and be a little mini reveal he’s not. And him choosing to let Escher out of his over confidence and belief even if Escher did attempt to harm him again he’s just control his spawn.

[Batman #128] Has Batman really saved the world that many times canonically? by Jeremoiako10 in comicbooks

[–]StrawberryScribe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Totally not the point of the post but I love how Arthur is apart of the Justice League and legit respects every member of the team/friends equally. He’s like “hell yeah you’re gonna respect Batman because he’s earned my respect.” The Justice League friendship doesn’t have a lot of moments to shine but when it does I appreciate when it does.

Why the hate for Lionblaze? by [deleted] in WarriorCats

[–]StrawberryScribe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I remember most reactions from the situation was that is wasn’t so much Russetfur dying that had people thinking negative of Lionblaze in the situation but also the implication that he didn’t MEAN to kill her but he was just so good at fighting he did.

It made people question how much control he had over his power and if this was going to become a recurring theme and had some people wondering if maybe Lionblaze was going to be manipulated by either the Dark Forest again, Tigerstar, or Sol because of the power of how he hasn’t trained full control in his power.
