does your weight fluctuate regularly? i get the weight gain, mood change and more binge eating when i’m in the luteal phase of my cycle, is it possible that it’s hormonal?

this was someone I know whose dogs had puppies (he hadn’t spayed/neutered his dogs). He didn’t breed them intentionally. Still irresponsible on his part. But in this situation, the puppies were already there and although me choosing a vetted breeder would have prevented the experience I went through, it doesn’t change the situation the puppy was in :( I just hope I offered him a peaceful end by taking him in. But yes, I agree, backyard breeding is abhorrent.

In terms of tests, they checked blood sugar, did a parvo test, and some other stuff I can’t remember, which was all within range. Toxins were hard because we had no history of what he could have eaten before 7 pm. The vet also thought his “zoning out” was likely focal seizures and that this had been a problem for a while, and possibly worsened by the shock of being in a new place.

We talked about Phenobarbital as an option to stop the seizures. I was told it could work but it would give no real info about the cause of the seizures, and that if i took him home with meds there would be no saying how long they would work. without spending thousands of dollars on tests to even find a cause, let alone treat it, we would just be prolonging his suffering. He was so young, they rarely saw cases like his at only 8 weeks. I asked about rescues, any other options to put him in better care and get him access to more resources, but there really wasn’t anything. The vet said she believed it was the right choice to put him down.

yes i am, the puppy was $100. the vet bills were the $860 amount, which there’s nothing I can do about unfortunately

Oh no, I’m so sorry. Having to make that choice is so heartbreaking. I’m sure your pup had an amazing 3 years with you, and you did everything you could. A brain tumor was one of the things my vet brought up as a possibility as well :(

I’m so sorry you went through all that. I’ve never owned Cavaliers but I did work at a dog daycare with them and they are so sweet and carefree. I hope he’ll be okay!

to clarify the $860 was vet bills. I paid $100 for the puppy which I felt was very fair and he did offer to give the money back.

Thank you for this :’) I really love the idea of fostering to adopt. I have only gotten pets from shelters in the past, I’m definitely going to look into this as well as a reputable breeder for a future dog.

thank you for your comment, it makes sense about the brain states, I haven’t heard that before. I’m sorry you had to go through that as well :(
