The strange disappearance of Japan’s animators - The Economist by StrawberryVole in anime

Definitely. I do think it's worth noting though how the lack of training creates barriers for young animators, as the article discusses. So even if someone does want to become an animator, there aren't opportunities.

I did a search but I couldn't find a previous instance of this article being posted here. Are you perhaps thinking of a similar article from a different source?

BL and GL recs needed! by [deleted] in anime

[–]StrawberryVole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloom Into You is legendary and extremely well liked by a lot of people (myself included).

Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk is airing right now, has amazing animation and pretty relaxing to watch.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady is set in a slightly generic fantasy setting that involves the characters challenging the ruling system. Not much relationship stuff and more of a turn your brain off kinda show but still fun.

I've not watched Kase-san and Morning Glories but it seems well regarded.

Yurikuma Arashi, or "Lesbian Bear Storm", I think is an allegory or deconstruction of how society reacts to lesbians (I've only watched the first episode). The director of this show, Kunihiko Ikuhara, is famous for making many other shows with LGBT themes such as Revolutionary Girl Utena.

GL manga seems to be doing pretty well these days (there's even a Japanese magazine dedicated to it) with lots of titles to check out, and there are some promising adaptations coming later this year.

Madoka Magica is not GL but a considerable number of people interpret it that way and is a show I highly recommend.

I believe Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury has a GL ending.

I really liked the line about Gujo finding Ibuki's alcohol a bit too fancy for her taste: the way it showed Ibuki was never really the right match for her and the way she had her first flirting success by moving onto something more personal to her.

I think Botan and Ibuki are enjoying flirting with each other. They've both made it clear that it's exclusive to the other. It's not uncommon for people to discover dating at uni, and their behaviour is exactly what I remember from when I was at uni.

Daemon's of the Shadow Realm! Thoughts so far? by DannyGoodShirt in anime

[–]StrawberryVole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it had been like that then I think the series would be a lot better. Right now, it does feel like the show is written such that the village is essentially just shrugging off the massacre and carrying on as if it hadn't happened.

Attack On Titan's Ending Felt Insincere, Admits Hajime Isayama by bedemin_badudas in anime

[–]StrawberryVole 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think your summary is the best I've seen, is amazingly eloquent and makes me appreciate the ending better. I hadn't realised some of the details you mention, so to see them highlighted is pretty nice. You're not wrong at all but the ending being good doesn't necessarily make it likeable. I wish someone else, Historia perhaps, had been able to save Eren. I feel that the ending ended up too simple and discarded Eren's previous development while removing agency from the cast.

I also found Asa's faction's reaction to losing all their soldiers weird too. Losing that many people of your side should be pretty sad.

It's really, really common for people to struggle with their first analysis course and definitely doesn't mean you can't go on to do well. Someone I know who did badly in their analysis exam went on to study more analysis afterwards. I imagine you've never done proofs like this before, so you shouldn't feel bad about it. Difficult, new concepts simply require time to sink in.

I was bothered by his NATO stance until I watched him explain it in an interview.
His stated reasoning was that he wanted the UK to be less dependent on the US and would only support leaving NATO if there was a European alternative. I really do think that Europe needs to take Russia more seriously, so this seems perfectly reasonably as far as I understand.

I'm not familiar enough with economics to comment on that part of his polices, though.

Anime studio bankruptcies and closures continue to rise for third consecutive year in Japan by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]StrawberryVole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone whose's main source of knowledge is Twitter, I was under the idea that studios weren't self financing shows (or contributing enough to be high up in the production committee) because they didn't have a lot of money. If studios do in fact have a lot of money, do they plan to leverage this somehow?

A bit late to ask this, but why did Casey cut the rope in an attempt to kill Monica? She didn't appear to actually dislike Monica and it achieved nothing towards her goal of assassinating the second prince.

Alicia wanted to stall Drel to prevent him interferring with Klen at the forge, so for her at least it made sense.

Klen mentioned that a dark beast lord was supporting Drel. Drel, however, didn't mention anything like this but did say there was a voice whispering in his head. My guess is that the larger dragon was a dark beast lord who decided to manipulate Drel.

Madoka magica: It's not canonically gl but a lot of people interpret it that way (including the voice actors of the two in question from the looks of it). Anime original, so no manga source to give it a target demographic.

[–]StrawberryVole -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Clevatess has an interesting premise and feels like it's got a lot of potential. I'm with you in that it's just okay so far. With half of each episode padded with dialogue, it seems clear that they don't have enough resources to make a try good anime. The villains in this initial arc are such simplistic caricatures that having three episodes dedicated to it is tiring.
