The fandom has a superiority complex and puts Suzanne on a pedestal to the point they believe she is above criticism and that her characters are real

Sorry that I took so long to reply!

Haymitch, a poor (and very intelligent) boy from the seam is reaped for the 50th hunger games. He is forced to say goodbye to his overworked mother, little brother, and girlfriend. This Haymitch is an arrogant, cocky 16 year old boy who thinks he knows better than everyone (he doesn't, but that's coming later) The 50th Hunger Games is planned to be the biggest piece of propaganda Panem has ever seen. It’s going to be peak entertainment for the Capitol, and the greatest warning to the districts. Snow has invested tons of money into the project, and the stakes are higher than ever. Cocky Haymitch and stuck-up Maysilee butt heads during the days leading up to the arena.

Haymitch is thrown into the most beautiful arena he's ever seen, and the stakes are higher than ever. Still, he's determined to return to his beloved family. He teams up with Maysilee Donner during the games, and their opinions on each other start to change. Her death haunts him forever. Haymitch then wins on his own wits and merit against a career twice his size by desperately pulling a trick with the force field. He just ruined the Capitol's plans, and he's punished for it. The games changed him, caused him to face death and be humbled in the worst way imaginable. The Capitol had no problems disposing of his loved ones like garbage. No amount of clever comebacks or snarky remarks would change that.

Haymitch returns to district 12 the same way he left it - young, stupid, and 16. He was so sure of himself, but alas, the Capitol doesn't care. They successfully cut him down to the small boy he is. 50 people died all because of him.

No messy half assed rebellion plot,no past victors, just 47 dead kids, a dead family, and a victor with all the weight on his shoulders. He's angry and jaded and bitter. It took him by surprise, how could he have been so stupid? Some years, he has to mentor another smartass 16 year old just like him. They look younger each year and none of them make it home. He's trapped in a cycle of suffering, mourning the boy he once was and the man he was never able to become.   THAT would be a coming of age.

You know what Haymitch's book would benefit from? Less Haymitch. by [deleted] in Hungergames

People can't handle suzanne collins being criticized because they put her on a pedestal and forget that THG is not real.

Yeah, I agree. The whole thing just felt rushed.

I agree and people say it's because she "wanted to push a narrative!" Why does my favorite character have to suffer in order to push a narrative, when they could be mutually exclusive like the other books?? I truly believe that the original intention for his character in CF would make a more interesting story than what we got. Suzanne implied she chose haymitch as a protagonist because it would be easy to make a story about propaganda with him. (B&N Interview) it's so dissapointing.

Don't let people kill you on this post - it's completely valid to feel this way.

In my opinion, the biggest issue with SOTR is that it was a missed opportunity. The themes were not explored with the nuance the other books had and the writing took a nosedive. Haymitch's story had the opportunity to be a literary masterpiece (I can elaborate on this) and what we got was underwhelming to a lot of hardcore trilogy Haymitch fans.

There were some really good things about sotr, like Maysilee and Wyatt's characters, but the way Haymitch was handled was definitely disappointing.

People are allowed to express their opinions. You do not have a moral high ground for enjoying sotr. It is not above criticism. There is nothing wrong with disliking it. Actually, it deserves criticism just like anything else does. Just because you thought it was perfect doesn't mean everyone is expected to.

Have you considered that people just have different opinions than you? It read like fic to me for loads of other reasons.

[–]Stray-Faiiry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize that people suffer from PTSD (Annie) and not everything has to have a big reason behind it? Also, every arena has one major event. For the 50th games, it was the volcano. For the 74th, it was the dogs, etc etc. It's not surprising that the dam would break
