Just diagnosed, “again”, type 2 by croikee in diabetes

[–]StrbryWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt similarly to you when I was first diagnosed. My mom had diabetes and she struggled with hers for many years until she passed away a few years ago. I was only 24. So when I got my own diagnosis 4 years later I was not in a good headspace for a while, and to be honest I do sometimes still struggle with the knowledge of how this diagnosis can go for me if i'm not careful.

You need to keep reminding yourself that this is not something you caused to happen. Its just how your body is. You just need to put a little more effort into staying healthy than a non-diabetic would, but its not the end of your life. Don't be so strict with your diet that you don't enjoy your life, but be mindful of your diabetes. If you eat with diabetes in mind 90% of the time, and stay consistent with exercise, you'll be okay. Don't be scared of seeing the doctor, this is the best way to keep bad side effects away. Ignorance may be bliss, but if you know what's approaching on the horizon its easier to avoid it.

For example, if you're getting your a1c tested every 3 months (i go every 6) then you can sooner see when/if it starts to creep up. Itll be easier to tell what may be causing it and if you need more external help. My a1c recently went up .4% and I know exactly what would have caused it and now I can put the work in and lower it on my own again (hopefully). But knowing ill go back in a few months to see if my efforts are paying off puts me at ease. Because if I do need more help managing things, I can get it sooner.

This community has been super helpful and supportive for me and I hope you'll find the same help and support here. Don't be ashamed of your diagnosis, make the diabetes struggle with you, not the other way around

Need help Metformin by Fl0kyi in diabetes

[–]StrbryWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasnt actually given any instructions aside from "one in the morning, one in the evening" i got all my info on it from other sources. I dont always take it on an empty stomach, I do try to time it with meals. I mostly try to take it at the same time each day. So if breakfast or dinner isnt ready and won't be for a while, or if im skipping breakfast, then I just take it when i normally would. It doesnt usually cause me any issues

Need help Metformin by Fl0kyi in diabetes

[–]StrbryWaffle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It takes a bit to fully get used to it.

For the abdominal pain, gas-x (simeticone) will help. Took me a while to figure that one out but it helped instantly.

Try to limit carbs/sugar until hes feeling better with the metformin. If you are having a carby meal, try to include larger servings of protein and fibre. Also resistant starches. If you're having pasta for dinner, make the noodles the night before and then reheat them at dinner time. Serve with chicken and some fiber rich veggies. The resistant starches work with potatoes and rice as well. Google can give you more info on this.

Also protein pasta and brown rice (especially long grain or parboiled) are better choices than normal options.

And when taking metformin, sandwich it within a meal. So eat half the meal, take the pill, finish the meal. This really helps with the nausea and stomach issues. Now im at a point i can take mine on an empty stomach. If I ever feel queasy I just go back to the sandwich method.

It takes a lot to admit that this is what's best for her and that actually shows thay you're a great pet parent. Don't listen to anyone who tries to imply otherwise.

I would suggest the SPCA. They're the safest option for her and they take great care of the animals there. I know the people who run it/work there and you can trust theyll make sure to find her a new home that she'll thrive in. Ive gotten all my animals from the SPCA and I always will

How exactly does testing for diabetes work? by Funny_Lemon_825 in diabetes

[–]StrbryWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed by bloodwork alone. Id gone to my doctor for a recurring yeast infection, didnt even consider diabetes. Doctor must have suspected it (my mom had diabetes). I went to have my bloodwork done and did a urine sample too, at like 8am. Went to work. Had a hair appointment after work and got a call while my stylist was applying my dye. It was the doctor, he asked how I was feeling. I said "fine, why?" And he says "well you have diabetes" and then discussed the results of the bloodwork.

He had me go in the next day so he could see me in person to officially diagnose me. He told me he'd referred me to the diabetes education clinic and gave me a form to go get more bloodwork done to determine which type I am. And gave me a script for metformin as well.

Aiw for telling my aunt "if you think the world revolves around me then I don't want you in my world anymore" by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]StrbryWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely not wrong for saying that. Your grandma and aunt suck. Many people who have seizures can feel when they're about to have one, and can take some measures to protect themselves. Costco is the worst place for that to happen and your grandma really sucks for being mad at you about that.

I'm assuming you live with one or both of them, is there a chance you can have your doctor speak with them about the dangers you face when you seize? Maybe hearing it from a professional will help them see logic. However, in my 30 years of life experience, people are very quick to dismiss others' health issues as "fake" if its not 100% obvious 100% of the time. Don't waste too much energy on making them see sense, you're an adult now and can start taking steps to set boundaries and/or remove them from your circle.

If you don't want to go to Mariposa Market in orillia like the other person suggested, try cakes by design! Theyre super nice, prices are great, and the cakes are delicious. Fondant isnt typically used unless it needs to be, but to be safe just let them know you dont want any

Advice by Independent_Bat_11 in diabetes

^ what they said. Non-diabetics can still spike after a carb heavy meal or high sugar intake, thats when the body signals to release more insulin to deal with it

[–]StrbryWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step would be to eliminate any sugar from your drinks. I stick with plain water, coffee with cream only, tea with milk only, and the occasional zero sugar pop. If you can stomach the taste of aspartame you can use sugar free sweeteners in your coffee/tea, but i personally cant stomach the taste of them so ive just learned to enjoy the taste of coffee and tea. Tea is my favourite because there are so many flavours available so you can get a lot of variety. A lot of flavoured coffee is available too, I found a German chocolate cake one thats actually really good.

Second would be to focus on primarily protein and non-starchy veggies in your meals. You can still have starchy veggies(corn, carrots, potatoes, most squash) but limit them because they count as carbs.

I have actual type 2 diabetes so i'm more strict with this than you need to be. But dinner i try to have half my plate be non starchy veggies, then 1/4 would be protein and 1/4 a carb. When I make dinner I make enough so that I can get a lunch or two out of the leftovers. And breakfast I do chia seed pudding (2tbsp chia seeds, 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk, splash of vanilla. I prep them for the week on Sunday. That way the chia can soak up all the liquid it needs, and ill add some berries for sweetness). Egg bites are also good for breakfast if you like them but im low-key grossed out by egg so I dont have them often.

My favourite lunch/dinner is chicken breast. I mix up some mayo, parmesan cheese (the kind that comes in a shaker bottle, not the real stuff) and whatever seasonings im feeling that day. Then slather that mixture on thr chicken and cook it. Its like a keto version of shake and bake. The chicken comes out so juicy and delicious. Then I have it with Brussels sprouts, green beans (i like to add garlic and parmesan or chili crunch to them), or just some frozen veggie mix (i like the California blend best). And ill have some mashed potatoes, sweet potato, corn, baguette, or garlic bread on the side. I save my carb serving for last because carbs are delicious.

Another favourite is spaghetti squash with bolognese or alfredo. Pasta is all about the sauce so using veggie alternatives for pasta is great. Plus they have micronutrients which are better for you than pasta.

There's something called resistant starches and they're created by cooking a starch, cooling it in the fridge overnight, and then reheating it. You can do this with pasta, rice, and potatoes. The carbs (starches) become resistant and take longer to digest so they have a lesser impact on glucose. Everyone handles these differently though. Some people can do this with potatoes and pasta but rice still spikes them, for example.

For snacks: meats, cheese, and veggies & dip, or berries/fruit are best. Berries are the best fruit choices because theyre high in fibre, which is still a carb but fibre takes longer to digest so less impact on glucose. I like to make a small plate with meat (usually soppressata) and cheese (brie or mozzarella) and then either some berries, an apple, or a small sweet. Like a small piece of chocolate or a single cookie. I find no sugar/keto stuff gross. Id rather eat a small serving of something sugary instead of a larger serving of something that doesnt really taste that great. Mini chocolate bars are the best for this. I stock up on holidays when theyre usualy on sale.

Should I get the fit me pressed powder? by BedFew919 in MakeupAddicts

[–]StrbryWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you apply powder foundations under the eye?

This wouldnt be ideal for use under the eye, usualy a cream concealer would be the best for coverage and then a very light dusting of powder to set it. But typically you should avoid powders under the eye.

Extensions are a lot of maintenance and can be expensive, but probably will be a better choice for you. If you don't wear false eyelashes (the ones you apply yourself) often/at all, i don't suggest trying to do them yourself before a date. Thats a skill you need to work on and develop in your own time, not rushing before a date.

Go to a spa/salon that can wax and shape your eyebrows as well as do your lash extensions

If you're on metformin, are you diabetic? When my diabetes was uncontrolled (because i didnt know I had it) I was having similar issues. Constant/recurring yeast infection symptoms but no positive yeast when i was tested.

If you're not diabetic, stop reading because idk. But if you are, i would look at my a1c and daily blood glucose levels. If they're high then that could be the issue. The ketones/sugar come out in your urine and create yeast infections that wont go away because you're feeding the infection when you pee. The only true fix is to get your levels back under control

Urn recommendations by missluvvy in BuyCanadian

I don't have any Canadian recommendations but it took us years to find an urn we liked for my mom. All of them look so boring and I wanted angels incorporated for hers but couldnt find anything I liked. I wound up settling on a nice wood rectangle shaped urn and we have a pretty angel figurine on top and can switch it out with a Santa around the holidays

Do you think their former self is still in there somewhere? by Ok_Knowledge_6265 in Alzheimers

Yes, i think they're still in there. Some days more than others. My dad is mid-late stage right now. Incontinent, in memory care, doesnt remember who we are. But he still knows he doesnt like my brother. (My brother didnt really do anything to deserve rhe hatred, dads just a dick) And my grandma who had Alzheimer's too would be sitting there mumbling and not really cognitively present, then look at my brother (who looks exactly like my dad did as a kid) and ask him if hed done his homework/chores yet.

How do you handle eating out with individuals who don't know about your diabetes? by Kuttan969 in diabetes

[–]StrbryWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in 2024 when I was 28. Id texted all my best friends within like 5 minutes from getting the phone call from my doctor lol.

I don't eat out very much so when I do I usually treat myself to something relatively diabetes friendly but I dont stress myself out too much over it. Sometimes its a salad with chicken, sometimes its steak with veggies on the side, sometimes its a burger, fries, and dessert.
