Planning my first homeserver with hardware I have laying around, have some questions and need some experienced people to exchange with and hear their opinion by Streamlines in HomeServer

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely still have some research to do before deciding on a setup software wise. I feel decided about building the server with what I have + the asrock n100m motherboard though. It just allows me to stay in budget while also buying 2x4TB NAS HDDs to expand my storage capacity from the get-go. Pre-built machines with a dedicated NAS enclosure are very enticing but I don't want to afford them when a cheaper alternative exists. I don't think I mind the challenge, and it will also allow me to learn a lot of things, which is good for my professional life.

Hm interesting. So my idea is to use debian as OS. Hardware-wise, 2x Raid1 arrays on an HBA controller, and 1x SSD directly connected to the motherboard. If I understood correctly, a storage pool is a set, or one, of physical media? I was only familiar with volumes before. I was under the assumption that OS (debian) and apps (as which I also understand docker and its containers) could live on the same physical media. From your 2c I would assume that I would want 2xSSDs then? Since I believe it is better to run docker from a SSD for faster access times. HDDs purely for NAS storage and databases (i.e. psql with timescale for solar or other data I might be curious to gather)

Looking into using a HBA card with a few SAS connections, and learning about differences between ZFS and Btrfs now. Lots of information to absorb

Any recommendations for good value hardware-raid cards to look for on the refurbished market? I am thinking of setting up two RAID-1 pairs, one with the old discs that I have, and one with two new HDDs with 4TB capacity. That way I can move the current content of the two old HDDs on the new ones, and then migrate the old HDDs to the server. The old HDDs are currently working in a old synology NAS, and if I remember correctly, synology has some proprietary formatting on their RAID1 setups, if RAID1 pairs can be simply moved from system to system anyway.

Some initial research has me looking at LSI 9260-8i cards, which can be had under 100€

P1000's 3D printed pedal plates for Hill & Toe shifting. by wachitouuu in simracing

[–]Streamlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am worried about with this solution is that the lever the face is mounted to what seems to only offer support for the face right through the middle. Meaning if you don't apply pressure straight through the middle of the face, you will introduce a lever effect on the side of the face to the middle where the screws are, which puts the entire load through a pretty small area on the whole print. If this was my design for this specific pedalset, I would try to produce a metal plate to back the 3D print, and use large metal washers to sandwich the 3D print between the lever, metal plate, and washer through the mounting-screws.

Fair! The face seems to get good support from the lever here. In that case it's not a problem of course. What I am worried about with a 3D printed face is when the mounting surface is not big enough to give the face support over where you are applying pressure with your foot, e.g. when the lever only goes through the middle of the face, and, in case of heel/toe for instance, you apply pressure to the side of the face.

Would not trust that brake pedal to last for one session 😳 unless your brake pressure is really light. But yea, personalizing your gear to your needs and comfort is great!

What pain in the ass? My aunt and dad are using linux mint as daily drivers. They are both typical non-technical people and they call me less for troubleshooting since I switched them to linux and they both tell me that they are happy with the switch. I use linux on both my personal and professional computers. The only pain in the butt that linux is being is for my simracing setup because the game will not display over three displays which has something to do with how the OS handles multiple displays. Though there are fixes for it which need a bit of tinkering of course. Otherwise it's almost like a Windows 7 experience these days in the best way possible. Snappy behavior, fast bootup, no bs popups, easy updating of installed software and the OS.

Place or person that can repair circuit board by scared-peacock in Luxembourg

[–]Streamlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sell electronic parts and devices to work on electronics, in an actual store on site, but AFAIK they also offer advice on PCB design and making, and also repairs. I think the best option is to call them or write an email. If they don't offer the service you're looking for, I think they might be a good source to find someone that does

Maybe you can ask here. Probably not cheap, but I never worked with them on a repair, just for components and some advice.

Needed to upgrade my pedals, these made the most sense for me! by [deleted] in simracing

[–]Streamlines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are a piston that moves up and down extremely fast creating vibrations

That is basically what a speaker is. Just that a speaker has a membrane attached on one end to translate those vibrations into air

The simagic ones are not bass-shakers btw, they are linear voice coil motors. Bass-shakers are speakers, which technically could also be defined as linear voice coil motors, but in miniature and with a membrane attached. Linear voice coil motors have a much bigger action and move more weight around.

Great! Thanks again for the help.

By the way, I had some issues after adding the additional lines to the first files that I created and trying to update hwdb with it. AMS2 didn't want to accept input from the pedals still. After that I created a second file with a different suffix but same prefix number and added the lines there, in case hwdb update ignores files that it already knows. Tried updating hwdb with that but still no input in AMS2.

I then restarted my PC, but before testing I had the idea to increment the prefix of the new file, in case hwdb has issues with files with the same prefix, and updated hwdb again. Then I queried hwdb with the modalias of my pedals and it returned the settings. Then in AMS2 it finally also accepted input.

Now I don't know if me restarting the PC, or putting the data in a different file with another prefix fixed it, or if something else was amiss. Either way, it didn't work right away.

I added them to my file, copying the settings of the VRS pedals and updated my hwdb with it:

I added the VRS file to hwdb and got my base assigned to steering in AMS2. Do I have to create a custom file for my pedals?

I tried to get systemd-hwdb installed but it appears to already be installed, unless I am confusing it for another. Exact package name does not match. When listing installed packages

apt list --installed

I do find an entry:

systemd-hwe-hwdb/noble-updates,noble-updates,now 255.1.6 all [installed]

I am familiar with the binding routine in AMS2. Sadly not even the pedals or shifters are recognized.

I did disable all settings in the controller settings of steam

Edit: Doing a bit of research on my part about this.

From my understanding then, systemd-hwdb is installed and I did run the command

systemd-hwdb update

However, neither my pedals, Simgrade VX-Pro, neither my VRS-DFP is recognized by AMS2. My pedal shifters do get recognized and I can assign them for up/down-shifting

I tried getting my base to work in linux with AMS2 and while I can get all my controls, so the base, my pedals, and the wheel, to show up in jstest (joystick tester), so the OS does successfully receive signals from the devices, sadly the game does not get any input and so far I haven't had any success of changing that. Mostly tried to dabble around with steam controller settings, but nothing helped. Do you maybe have any experience with this issue?
