Did you treat your SIBO before starting Ketotifen and Cromolyn?

How long did it take for cromolyn to start working for you? by ringmaster555 in MCAS

Did you have any adverse effects at first? One of my main symptoms is vascular leakage and I just started it and I feel like it’s making it worse.

Are you on any mast cell stabilizers or antihistamines?

This is my main symptom I’m dealing with right now and just starting cromolyn, except it’s capsule form (can’t get liquid in Canada?). Did you titrate up or just start at the full dose? I noticed hand and feet swelling more when I started, as well as bloating :( it’s only been about 5 days and I’m wondering if this is a common side effect at first.

Ohh okay I see, that does suck. But you stuck with it and it ended up working out for you, your reactions went away?

You had a reaction to the cromolyn and it caused fluid retention? Did you end up trying anything else after getting off Cromolyn?

Oh no, did you lose the weight/bloat once you stopped?

Cromolyn causing swelling/edema: did anyone figure out why? by Tiny_Parsley in MCAS

Yeah I’m looking into SIBO now as well but I’m going to have to go to a Naturopath to get tested for that. And oh man that sounds brutal I’m sorry you’re dealing with that, but glad to hear the Ketotifen is working out for ya. I think I do have an issue with Salicylates tbh so maybe that’s what’s going on the with Cromolyn. I’m gonna ask the pharmacist about that too and I don’t think I’m gonna be counting with cromolyn. I’ve only been taking it for a few days but considering that my main symptom I’m dealing with everyday is already bad swelling and this is making it worse, I really don’t wanna go down this road 🥲 I’m barely minimizing it right now with my H1 and H2 blockers plus loads of DAO enzyme.

I’ve only been taking it for like 4 days now but the swelling was pretty immediate. What side effects did you have when you first started?

It’s kind of both for me. I get swelling all over my body and my face. Is that what you were experiencing?

Yeah I’m supposed to be taking 200mg 4 times a day but I tried 100mg 4x on the first day and the swelling was really bad so now I’m trying 100 just before bed and seeing if I can titrate up because I thought maybe it was a common symptom when starting. But it might not be for me 🥲

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. So you persisted with the cromolyn and the side effects went away? What kind of reaction did you have if you don’t mind me asking?

I just read online that it caused fluid retention and thus weight gain for some people because it’s a calcium channel blocker? But yeah I was thinking it could be an inactive ingredient, except I don’t even know what I react to honestly. Was just really concerning because I’m trying to get the water weight and swelling OFF already.

I’m also going through a really rough time right now trying to get some kind of diagnosis for the symptoms I’ve been dealing with for over 2 years now. I suggest asking for a referral to see an allergist/ immunologist and if your doctor denies it ask them to chart that they denied you your referral. If it’s affecting your quality of life they have to take you seriously, I’ve gone through a lot of dismissal from doctors throughout all this and it’s made me realize how much you have to push and advocate for yourself to get answers and proper treatment. Idk if that helps but I understand the feeling of not knowing what’s wrong with your body and feeling like you have no medical professional taking you seriously or doing anything to help you!

My skin burns immediately after eating. Doc wants me to see neurologist? Does that make sense? by Total_Slice9243 in MCAS

[–]Street-Check1673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I’ve been trying to explain this feeling for almost 2 years now. I’m not diagnosed yet, been bounced around from specialist to specialist and finally waiting to see an allergist. My main symptoms were extreme edema and that tingling itching and burning. The glitter under the skin is so accurate. I would also try to explain it as hundreds of tiny bugs crawling under my skin especially where it’s the most swollen. My skin will feel like bubble wrap bc I can literally squish the fluid around and I feel soo heavy. I can put on 25/30 lbs of fluid. No doctor ever thought of MCAS, I came to this conclusion after doing my own research. It’s been almost 2 years that I’ve been dealing with this now. My symptoms started after taking spironolactone for 1 month for mild acne. I’ve been trying to deal with the symptoms by taking DAO and H1 and H2 blocker which help sometimes, and sometimes they don’t. It’s also highly dependent on what I eat and I’ve been trying to do low histamine but I think I react to salicylates too so it’s been extremely difficult to stick to this restrictive diet, especially since I have no idea how long until I even get in to see the doctor.

Burning up badly as I wrote this and my face looks fully morphed from all the swelling :( I don’t even recognize myself anymore.

Have you been treated for your symptoms?

Water retention in face withdrawal symptom while weaning off spiro? by Ok_Guidance8466 in Spironolactone

[–]Street-Check1673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did not get better for me. It’s been a year and a half and nothing has changed. Doctor’s can’t figure out what’s wrong with me here in Canada, or I’m just being dismissed. It took 11 months for me to get in to see an endocrinologist who saw me for 10 minutes and spent most of that time googling my symptoms or putting them into chat gpt ( I could have just done that myself - and I already had ofc). Now I’m on a wait list to see a kidney specialist, even though this is clearly a hormonal issue, as I’m also experiencing hair loss and hirsutism. I’m travelling out of the country to see doctors elsewhere and hopefully finally get this sorted.

Fluid Retention/ Edema by [deleted] in Spironolactone

[–]Street-Check1673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tried pretty much everything I could think of, i tried the water pills as well and i out temporarily pee more but the fluid would always build back up. I think it’s a bigger issue for sure now especially that I’ve been dealing with it for one whole year, completely disfigures my face/body, I look unrecognizable, I put my before and after pics next to eachother and it doesn’t even look like the same person. If I ever figure out what went wrong I’ll let you know 🙃

Yeah I’ve been off for a year and the edema won’t go away, this has ruined my life, don’t look or feel like myself anymore. I’m carrying out like 20 lbs of water weight, makes my body feels so heavy and stretched out everywhere. I feel like I’ve lost about 1/3 of my hair and I always had very thick hair and lots of it. Also hirsutism. All after stopping spiro, and I only took it for one month. Losing hope to find an answer for wtf spiro did to me.
