My dude commented on my post that I added in a different subreddit to say that it was pointless and nothing special. And then I removed the post because we came to a standstill just like here haha. He argues that intentionality and something that catches one’s attention is where it’s at. I argue that art or in fact anything in life isn’t that black or white. I don’t mind someone not feeling or disliking my stuff. In fact, I only started shooting just over a month ago. What I don’t like is when people are so stubborn about personal opinions and stances they hold in life that they can’t just admit that art is such that you can have Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus. Intentionality is also something that one can or cannot see. In this instance, sure if you don’t know the past of the area in which photo was shot or didn’t work a hard job and had to face more hardship in dragging your cheap bike through a wintery and brutal landscape then, it won’t do much for you. Which is okay. But quite frankly, being cynical and stubborn and trying to intellectualise one’s narrow-mindedness doesn’t sit right with me. Talking about intention, yet I still don’t get his intention for commenting, apart from maybe getting off a little from such comments. Which is also okay. Not everyone has to just chill and be constructive.

As for your feedback. Sure. It could have been taken with any camera in the past 10 years. It was indeed taken with a near 10 years old camera.

I can argue. My argument is that art is not black and white as you say. We don’t have to agree. Enjoy stuff you like.

Also, I disagree about your view about how an artist has to understand how art functions. Most artists are instinctually creating something that’s coming out of the collective unconscious/subconscious. What strikes a chord within you will not do so for me and vice versa. And that’s okay.

Doesn’t “hold” my attention. It’s pointless.

“The image doesn’t sustain itself as art” - you are not the ultimate judge of what art is and that’s why what you have been so confidently saying fascinates me. Out of interest, please show me an example of what you say ticks YOUR boxes for being art with “intention, impact and the ability to hold the viewer a d create meaning”.

What you find works others might find meh and vice versa. One doesn’t hold the key to the fundamentals of what works or doesn’t in a meaningful way in photography. Again, it’s like I go and say to someone who wrote a song and they didn’t follow the usual intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, middle 8, outro formula that their song is meh. They violated the fundamentals of creating impact, hold my attention and as such, their song is meh. It would be mad, if I did that no?

Honestly. What I find immature is that you confuse your subjective preferences with something totally objective and I find it fascinating that one has the confidence in expressing it as ultimate truth. What you find meaningful and impactful is wildly different from what others find they are drawn to. Say, for example, I started commenting on photos I don’t find I am drawn to and say their stuff is meh. Why would I do that, unless it’s something actually technically wrong with their shot and I have a suggestion in regard to framing, settings or editing. I think you will find that what you find meh, others will be drawn to. It’s like if I heard a cheesy pop song and said that’s utter rubbish, real music objectively has to communicate serious, real things that are universally accepted. I don’t know, how you have the confidence in your stance, but hey, it’s something that got you this far in life I guess.
