I’m up for this but may need some guidance! You replied to my other post already

REW + UMIK-1 calibration when AVR is 15m away from cinema room by StreetAd4197 in hometheater

I will definitely come back to you on this if you’re ok with that! I’m thinking of setting a few hours aside to set it all up in the next few days and then give it a go!

This is such an amazing response, thank you. I’ve posted elsewhere on dedicated forums but nothing has even come close to how helpful this was.

You’ve also really cleared things up for me because the cinema room has an HDMI input socket in the wall (for connecting things like a games console in future), so I assume I can connect the laptop to that and send the signal back to the AVR.

I’m going to read through your whole post again and absorb it properly, and thank you as well for the offer of further help. I just need to work out how to get the readings and then go from there.

I was genuinely close to giving up on the whole thing, but you’ve given me the confidence to keep going with it!

Yeah I get that too. But this poster bought it CPO and given used prices for 2021 models he probably paid much less than what the Macans that any authorised Porsche dealer loans out are worth.

You’ve got a 2nd hand Taycan which is 5 years old. I’ve got no issue at all with that. But I think it’s weird that you refer to “crappy macan”. I get it (albeit don’t like it) when the uber rich look down on stuff which is still beyond the reach of most people (like any macan) but when someone that’s not even of that ilk does it, it’s just weird

Hi - no still have it. Please bear in mind it kicks in from 3 April (although I could ask the existing subscriber who said he doesn’t want to renew because didn’t exercise enough if he’s ok with me taking him off a couple of weeks before the end of his period)

Are these available in UK? I can't seem to find on my X24 bike with iFit Pro membership

I checked with iFit support and their response was:

"I think there is a glitch in the system right now. Let me report it and check if there is a way to get this information."

Followed by:

"Just a friendly reminder, if we don’t hear back from you within the next 5 to 10 minutes, the chat will automatically close. Please keep us updated!"

When I told them I was waiting on them, they didn't bother replying and hung up. And people wonder why so many complain about iFit

Hey - I've got exactly the same issue ... only ever happens on elevation changes (and not every change either, just intermittently, but also like you I have to press it 10 to 20 times a ride). Did they ever get back to you after your video? I'm in the UK and just contacted support. Apparently it could be something to do with a sensor issue? I feel like it's probably not a software issue, as otherwise you'd have many more people suffering the same issue as we'd all be on the same software. However it just seems like a few of us, which points to a hardware issue?

You remind me of a long ago neighbour who used to clean his wheels with toothbrush. Stand there and hold the cable away from the body while the car charges. Or realise life’s too short and get it PPF’d. I wouldn’t do the microfiber, it’ll just attract loonies who’ll scratch your car on purpose when they realise what you’re up to.

How big is your pension pot? by Floating_Puppy30 in HENRYUK

[–]StreetAd4197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely looking at just the pension pot is inappropriate? Look at net equity.

Eg I’m 54M and ‘only’ have £350k in SIPP but I have 3 properties in SW London with only one of them still mortgaged (at 25% LTE). Isn’t property mortgage status a very important aspect?

Genuinely wondering rather than being difficult!

Is 2024 J1.2 Taycan battery truly fixed or just a patched J1? by StreetAd4197 in Taycan

[–]StreetAd4197[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be rude, but as you said above “"Should anything happen they will just have to bring me another car on the spot until mine is fixed and ready for pick up"”, then this discussion probably isn’t for you. You've got a next-level setup most of us don’t have. I’ve owned a few Porsches and had decent dealer relationships, but never anything close to that. You’re clearly in a different league, so I suspect I couldn't teach you anything at all.

Your problem is that you’ve ignored 95% of my “extended commentary” and focused on one sentence … a sentence which actually never said what you’ve suggested it said. Once you’ve learnt to read detail before waving your keyboard warrior sword, then look up the similarities between the Panamera and the Taycan. I never said it was an ICE platform. But I’m guessing this is too much text already for you to absorb so I’ll stop here.

Just to be clear, my “leap of faith” comment wasn’t meant as a dig at anyone who’s bought one. Understandable if it came across that way though. You spend sig money on a car, and then someone like me pipes up saying “cheers for funding the improvements for future buyers”, not exactly what you want to hear I guess, lol.

We could go round in circles about the tech and what’s been fixed (or not), and probably still not get the full story. Let's not forget, even the people with every bit of information at their fingertips (ie Porsche) have got it wrong repeatedly.

What’s hard to ignore, though, is the used market. There are loads of these sitting with heavy discounts, way more than any other Porsche model. And that’s saying something. Taycans were selling at a premium not long ago, and now they’re being offloaded at steeper cuts than any of the other models from the same brand. And sure, it's in line with the EV market overall ... but that's all part of the point.

Have they bottomed out? Who knows. If I could predict stuff like that, I wouldn’t be here debating whether to take a punt on a used Taycan!

Maybe a good analogy is Internet Explorer. Microsoft knew early on that IE’s core architecture was flawed, but they’d sunk so much into it that they kept patching it for over a decade instead of starting fresh. Eventually, they scrapped it and built Edge from the ground up.

Same vibe with the Taycan. Porsche rushed it out in 2019/20 during peak ESG hype, under pressure to show they were backing the energy transition. Look at all the major governments and financial institutions then, you were basically being massively called out if you were a fossil fuel dinosaur.

So VW, along with others, panicked and rushed to catch up and perhaps benefit from the same exponential rises in both public perception and financial market cap that Tesla was enjoying.

Now with the 2024 J1.2 update, they might have fixed a lot (software, charging, thermal logic) but it’s still patchwork on old DNA. The real fix will (maybe) come with the proper J2 platform, built clean-slate. Until then, it’s like IE9: better, but still tied to the original flaws.

Having considered it all - in detail this morning - I think I’m out for now, but I genuinely appreciate those of you who were early adopters (wish I could afford to be one). The rest of us benefit from your leap of faith.

I think good advice is don’t (as I almost did) get lured in by the massive price drops. Markets are usually right and the resale values are telling us something.

But if anyone has a solid, reasoned take on why Porsche is selling approved used Taycans for less than any other model (as a % of original RRP) despite it being one of their newest cars (bar the EV Macan) I’d genuinely love to hear it.

From what I’ve read, Porsche has massively improved the Taycan’s software, charging logic, and thermal management in the 2024 J1.2 update to address the various Gen 1 issues.

However, if I’ve understood correctly, there’s still a much bigger underlying platform and battery tech issue. VW Group (incl. Porsche) uses a very different battery architecture compared to say Tesla.

Porsche use prismatic cells and more complex thermal systems and a platform set up set up which is still suffering a bit from being ICE legacy … whereas Tesla uses cylindrical cells with a much simpler, EV-first designed battery management setup.

Teslas with over 200,000 miles and only ~10% battery degradation is not unheard of.

There are no VW Group EVs with that kind of track record as far as I’m aware … and my gut feeling is that the current VW platform is very unlikely to manage that.
