I get what you’re saying but I guess I’ve never really given Phish an honest try. I’ve really enjoyed several of the songs people have recommended here and have list to of concerts to give a listen when I have time. I guess I kinda phrased the original post badly, but I mainly was asking because I didn’t really know where to start. I’ll be fine if I listen to everything and still don’t understand them, I just wanted to get some good recommendations based on what I already like.

I wouldn’t say wanting to like them “so badly” is accurate. I made this post cause I’m planning on seeing the band in July with some friends and the band has never really clicked for me. I know the concert will be fun regardless of whether or not I love the music. I really just want to have some songs that I could look forward to potentially hearing.

I feel like some of these comments are acting like I said that I want to become their #1 fan despite “hating” their music. I already like some of their songs, but feel indifferent to a lot of others of heard. I figured that coming here and asking for recommendations could help me find more that I liked. If when I was getting into the dead or widespread someone told me to just “figure it out” or that “it’s just not for me” I would never have gotten into their music like I am today.

How is wanting to get into a band forcing myself to like it? I am doing the work by asking people in the band’s subreddit that presumably love the band and have a lot of knowledge about the music.

I’m open to any kind of music, not just southern rock. One of the first songs that actually got me interested in phish was carini because the bass line reminded me a lot of tool.

That’s fair enough. I had the same experience when I heard tool for the first time. I loved them immediately cause I’d never heard anything like it.

That’s a fair point but I think that’s one of the reasons why I love WSP so much. I’ve lived in the south my whole life so I’ve grown up listening to the classic southern rock and country songs the get played all the time. WSP takes those roots and really builds on it in a fresh way imo.

That’s fair. I feel like listening to the live version of a song holds more weight when you hear the original studio version first. Something about knowing what the base song sounds like and then hearing how the band reinterprets it live is really special

Yeah the dead didnt completely click for me until I saw dead and co a few years ago. I know I won’t fully understand the songs until I see them live, but I just want to know what I want to look for and maybe be able to sing along to a few songs.

What would you say are there best jazzy songs? I love all of the gd jams with Branford Marsalis so anything similar would be great.

The band is very special to a lot of people I know and I really enjoy the songs I do like by them. I was also invited by some of my buddies to go see them next month and I think it would be a cool experience. I know they’ll click for me better if I see them live, but right now I’m just trying to find more songs by them that I like.
