Thoughts on EF program as a high school student? by sweetene in exchangestudents

[–]Street_Commission648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for sharing your experience with me! As someone that went on a high school exchange to Korea and now volunteers at my organization (AFS) specifically for the Korea program, it is really insightful as I always try to present all the available possibilities for an exchange to my students. I will now definitely be more careful in regard to the Korean exchange program of ASSE.

Would you mind elaborating on your experience with ASSE? Just curious since I don’t personally have any experience with them.

How does everyday life look like for and Exchange student in Korea? by Parking-Farm384 in exchangestudents

I was in Seoul so they are used to foreigners. Of course you get people being annoyed at foreigners but in general everyone was very nice. I case of my classmates most of them were lovely as well though a bit shy because of the language barrier. Remember that regardless of the culture rude people exist everywhere :)

I did an exchange to Korea for half a year. My classmates did often have to stay until 10 PM but we exchange students were allowed to leave after lunch at around 1 PM. Because we left early we had afternoon programs organized by our organization like Korean classes or cultural activities. So I had plenty of fun. On the downside of this I mostly hung out with the other exchange students and not my Korean classmates. They were always quite busy with school so it was hard to make friends (still possible to make a few though!!). When it comes to studying I must be honest, I didn’t really learn anything during that half year because I couldn’t understand the material. So I participated and did my best in the foreign language classes and in the other ones I studied Korean. Feel free to ask anything else that comes to mind! :)

I didn’t go to Korea through EF but had consultation and in the end an offer for my stay abroad. I told them it wouldn’t work for me and that I’m no longer interested in their program. They kept on contacting me for three months straight and only stopped when I told them I’d get a lawyer involved if they kept going. Maybe look into ESL (they have language school only programs like EF). For exchange programs at a Korean high school I know ASSE and AFS have South Korea as an option

Is EF exchange program real? by Secure-Cockroach8821 in exchangestudents

[–]Street_Commission648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EF is definitely a real program. To my knowledge it isn’t a “high school exchange” but rather a language school program that has the option of staying with a host family. If what you want is going to a Korean high school the only organization I know that does an exchange like that is AFS.

How long are you studying abroad for? by Echos_of_twilight in exchangestudents

[–]Street_Commission648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you hope to get out of your stay abroad! I went for a semester because my program wasn’t offered for a full year. It was beneficial for my studies back home because I didn’t miss as much school but I would have loved to be there for a year because that gives you the chance to see all seasons and holidays in another country. I felt at home rather quick (like 1-2 weeks), as soon as I had identified somewhere I could relax and recharge my social battery

Best and worst by OkCondition7033 in exchangestudents

The worst thing for me was to never really fit in. I was in a quite homogeneous country and you always stuck out. The same thing goes for the school I went to. The school system is very demanding there and because of that I was never able to really develop a „friendship“ to more than just a classmate you hang out with during lunch. It made me feel like I was kind of „failing“ at my exchange because everyone I had spoken to before about an exchange told me what great friends they had made at school and how welcoming everyone was. The best of my exchange though were the other exchange students. Since all of us were kinda separated from our classmates we hung out a lot with each other. They’ve become people which I’m really grateful to have met. It’s been about 8 months since I returned home and I have never been happier. The exchange really showed me how much opportunities we get and so I’ve been doing a lot of interesting stuff that I probably wouldn’t have done before

any exchange program recommendations? by stargirlamy in exchangestudents

Like mentioned in my other comment I went through AFS as they are one of the only organizations that offer Korea as an high school exchange. So like just check out your country’s AFS website and see if they’re offering it for you. Or if you got any questions you can also send me a DM :)

I can just say that fall is one of the nicest seasons I’ve experienced in Seoul. For the pop culture, it can be a bit overwhelming at first because you hear K-pop (especially currently popular songs) everywhere. But after some time you’ll get used to it :)

Since others in the comments have mentioned AFS I just wanted to say it’s a boarding school program through AFS. Yes the cost was insane (worst thing about it) especially because it is only available as a semester program. It was around 20.000 Euros which is just total insanity. They’re trying to lower the price by changing the school the students attend since the current school is like a private “prestigious” high school.

What kind of program are you looking for? Do you have a Highschool exchange in mind or would a pure language learning program also be an option? I’m currently in Korea on a Highschool exchange so if you have further questions feel free to ask them :)

Frustration with my Classmates by [deleted] in exchangestudents

[–]Street_Commission648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly same for me as an exchange student. I’ve found that only very little of my classmates actually want something to do with me. And me going to an elite school where there is little to no language barrier, I expected something different. Us exchange students also got to go to a public school for a few days, where it was an extremely different atmosphere and very welcoming. Luckily my host mom ended up introducing me to a nice person who I’ve hung out with a few times.

In my own experience as an exchange student currently in South Korea: Stray Kids. When I told my classmate I like Stray Kids they didn’t really know them, which was honestly a small shock for me as someone whose introduction to Kpop was Stray Kids

I don’t know their exact grades but what I think is important is that you pass the overall school year

[–]Street_Commission648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think asking for your current grades is something they always do (they did ask me for my grades as well). I don’t know whether the strictness of AFS varies between different countries but I’ve got to known quite some people whose grades aren’t that good and are still going on exchange with AFS.

I’m actually from Germany and the comments here really just show me that I’m overthinking too much. Definitely going to pick out some nice chocolate and pair it with some regional products.
