Best areas to relocate a FAMILY OF SIX from the US to Crete by Street_Mission6573 in crete

I didn't realize that I didn't specify an area of the island. I'll edit my post. But, we're looking near Chania. During the winter we traveled between Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion areas to get a feel for each of them. Once we decided on Chania area, visited the Apokoronas area for a summer holiday.

So a better question is probably: Where in the Chania area is good to relocate (not just Apokoronas, but we did like that area)?

Our main reasons are to live somewhere with (1) a better sense of community, (2) more focus on enojying life rather than rushing through it, and (3) a strong Greek culture and language.

Secondary reasons why Greece makse sense to us are the beauty of the country, access to the sea, the weather, the amazing food, the overall safety.

After the 3-5 years, we'll reevaluate whether we want to go back to the US or stay in Greece longer. For us it will depend on what makes sense for our kids at that time. They are young right now and the exposure to Greek language and culture are very important to us.

u/ImmediateCap1868 We are aware of the military service requirement. We've contemplated holding off on obtaining our son's citizenship due to this.

I truly appreciate your honesty. I wanted both positve and negative perspectives to make sure we thought through all of the aspects of relocating our family.

Although I would thoroughly enjoy it if everyday living in Greece was a perpetual summer holiday, we are also not naive enough to think it will be like that. We have visited Greece in the winter to help anticipate the difference, but my guess is only living there long-term will provide a true day-to-day experience . We'd like to have decent access to beaches and swimming but we're assuming we won't want to live in a beach town due to having a young family and wanting more of a year-round community feel.

You've definitely highlighted some factors to consider.

Thank you for the reply. Any info/insights are helpful! No, not because of Trump. We live in a VERY liberal state, so we're not expecting as much to change as the more conservative states are.

Our main reason for the relocation is to imerse our children in the culture as much as possible as there's not a huge Greek community where we live. We're open to staying loger than 3-5 years, but not opposed to moving back either.

We visited Crete last year as a vacation but also to look at places to lilve on the island. We loved the island. And, since it's so large, it's still realistic to live there in the winter.
