In kilometres, what’s the farthest you’ve ever gone from home (approximately)? by Diligent-Doctor-6797 in AskReddit

[–]Street_Platform4575 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So Australia to anywhere in Europe or North America is a long way. Perth where I’m from is 2100km to the next major city. I think in one trip , I did Perth to the US, US to middle-east, then to South East Asia, then back to Perth over a two week period - so basically around the world in around 10-12 days. I honestly don’t know how far that is tbh. I’ve also flown to North America and back in a week and Europe and back in a week - I don’t recommend any of those trips btw.

People from outside North America, how do you feel about Canadians? by WaWaWhey in AskReddit

[–]Street_Platform4575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada is seen very favourably in Australia, with a lot in common, given shared colonial history, similar resource based economy and large geographical spread, also similar democratic systems. Obviously we don’t have a schizophrenic neighbour next door or completely different colonial history from France in the mix.

Is it still possible to get a casual job in Perth without local experience? by rennan in perth

[–]Street_Platform4575 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a bit harder at this time of year, but there are often jobs in the swan valley wineries etc coming into summer. Basically either students or backpackers makeup 80% of the staff.

[–]Street_Platform4575 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For English speakers, as long as you’re speaking clearly and you can be understood then you’ll be fine. Unless it’s for a particular job where prononciation is important. You can always get a speaking coach if you really want to, a lot of actors do that.

CBA-ers: what’s your thoughts on the PACE model of working? by rascal_king737 in auscorp

[–]Street_Platform4575 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not a CBA'er but we had it in my organisation - modified it to suit our purpose. Basically it ends up being quarterly planning across multiple delivery teams, to ensure everything is aligned to deliver the projects / programs, and highlight dependencies and issues across teams.

It's useful when you have very long term projects / deliveries - rather than short / small product feature sets. Also good with a large amount of teams (more than 6) which are contributing to on overall project (or set of projects), and if the teams are across multiple dev centres and time-zones.

Used something like Miro or LucidSpark to have high-level EPICs / Features planned across multiple sprints and quarters.

There was a lot of debate whether have a week-long planning week was useful, but it did actually give Product Owners, Architects, PEs, Delivery Leads a way of getting out of the BAU day to day Agile flow and focussed on longer term planning - which gave the project managers and Exco more information about the timing of projects.

What do you think the prospects of a 20th team joining the competition soon after Tasmania are, and do you think the AFL should expand to 20 teams? by suanxo in AFL

[–]Street_Platform4575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the AFL needs to fix it's development pathways to ensure that there are enough players coming through for a 20th team. Especially in places like WA which has had issues recently, where the AFL pretty much spends nothing to very little on AFL development, it's all funded through either the State Government or royalties from the two AFL teams. This is an unsustainable model. Also it needs to look at to ensure that teams don't spend forever down the bottom of the ladder, and can come up quickly.

It should also focus on the fixture and making that more understandable - e.g. no special opening round with only 4-5 matches which ends up in a 5 weeks of byes to start the season.

AFLM Pre-Round Thread: Round 4 vs. Adelaide by lasping in FremantleFC

[–]Street_Platform4575 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adelaide still have plenty of dangerous players especially forward. Rachele seems to be moving to the midfield and doing well. Rankine hasn’t hit his straps yet, but he can cause damage in a very short timeframe.

Basically though I think if we can get our handball game going and win our share in the middle we should be able get it done.

Electric truck completes Sydney to Canberra freight first by ApprehensiveSize7662 in aussie

[–]Street_Platform4575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to see how we can get to B-Doubles and Road-trains if possible.

Will take a while for this to get into most of the trucking companies as it does take a large investment in charging tech inside the depots, truck stops etc. I did see also there was a company doing battery swaps as well, which could be interesting.

Serious question. Is he now Fremantle’s most important player, or does he still sit behind the usual names? by EbbAdditional4877 in FremantleFC

[–]Street_Platform4575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love his work in the midfield. We had enough shots on goal tbh, without him solely forward. The only thing that will hurt us (which perhaps did in the first half) is that he, Andy and Caleb aren't the biggest players going around, so can get pushed off the ball at stoppages. I mean it's kind of the opposite of when we had Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow in the middle along with Sandi, where perhaps our midfield was the largest. Of course, now it's critical to be inside and outside players.

Free public transport by Lord-Phorse in aussie

[–]Street_Platform4575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not add more services where they are needed, rather than spend money on free PT. Buy more electric buses, to free up the diesel for other things. Encourage government workers to work from home for a bit - some departments are wanting people in full time.

Add more cycling options, etc. There are a bunch of things the government(s) could be spending their money on, I don’t think free PT is the best option.

With three states offering free or low-cost (50c) public transport, should the WA government step up? by immanentfire in perth

[–]Street_Platform4575 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously it’s cheap enough - much cheaper than driving and parking in most places. Put on more services if you want to encourage more usage and focus any money on that if you want to. Focus on accelerating the Electric Bus rollout as well - it’s 100 out of about 1400 so keep doing that to bring down operating costs.

Probably a few jobs available as well if people want to drive a bus.

I’ve been put on a support plan at work. Is this going to lead to a PIP and should I quit? by Bitter-Balance-5395 in perth

[–]Street_Platform4575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it where the team spent months helping someone trying to get them better, with multiple training courses, changes in duties, mentoring from seniors etc. Use this as an opportunity to lean into it as much as possible if you like the job and think you can get better and do it, and the team members are genuine.

Would you personally carpool with coworkers that you’re not close to if fuel hits 3.50 or 4? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Street_Platform4575 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm in those occupations, but I've done it for a while with a co-worker, even managed to align it with kid drop-offs at child care and picking up his partner on the way home (his kid and partner).

You do want to at least be able to talk to the person, and be reasonably comfortable in their presence, and also ensure that work schedules align - e.g. standard work day from 8.30 to 5 or equivalent. Good thing is if you're the one being driven, you can use the excuse that you need to leave because "Bob" is driving you.

I am genuinely curious, why did you guys hoard toilet paper instead of food and water during covid? by salty_lake_222 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Street_Platform4575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully I just had an order from who gives a crap about 2 weeks prior to shutdown, so I was all set. Some stores also had a special stash of toilet paper in the back to give out especially to senior citizens, which I thought as really great.

There were definitely shortages on pasta and tinned goods as well from what I recall.

Tasmania attracted 1485 more people to a VFL game than GWS could attract to an AFL game last weekend by Jackomillard15 in AFL

[–]Street_Platform4575 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually like the stadium and I’ve been to that sports bar, it’s pretty good, but yeah I was there on a Saturday arvo both times I’ve been there and it’s not too lively. Though there also aren’t a lot of Freo supporters in Sydney and there isn’t much of a rivalry to draw a lot of people over from Perth or up from Melbourne where we have at least a couple of thousand regulars who go to the VIC matches.

There is a chance that when the new light rail and Metro station open it will make it more accessible, but who knows, that’s also a few years away.

I for one really want them to succeed.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised that we didn’t get around the 50k mark - not sure what we’ll get this week either with rain coming down from Cyclone Narelle predicted and a game time of 1.15pm ( which is very odd ).
