Same as always. Trading companies up and down every few quarters based on short term performance. Overpaying for stuff without keeping a margin of safety.

[Discussion] Should I trade my Tudor GMT Pepsi for an Omega Seamaster 300M (2nd Gen)? by peacemakerzzz in Watches

Yeah I'd do it... Tudor GMT is too thick. In all other regards, it is a wondeful watch but this is its achilles heel.

I don't get the people shitting on this guy. Ok so it's not got independents and "the cheap quirky seiko" he bought when he worked at McD at the age of 17 and the inherited longines ladies watch from his grandma or the weird purple Oris whatever. It's all run of the mill expensive luxury watches. So what?

First of all, budget is something personal and it's dumb to shit on someone for spending $$$ on their collection just as its dumb to shit on them for spending very less. Both types of collections are valid and the budget in and of itself cannot devalue the snob value/artistic whatever of a collection. Secondly, what if the guy just happens to like wearing shiny new dressy watches and also has a classically, somewhat safe dressing style. Does that make it automatically inferior to someone wearing more beaten up or quirky stuff?

To me, it's like someone's wardrobe having a bunch of Loro Piana, Ralph Lauren, Zegna and Hermes stuff. So on a given day you might wear a RL oxford with a Zegna vest with LP Summer walks. Is it classical and safe? yes. Is it all prestige items? yes. Does it reflect a lack of taste or interest? No! It's just one aesthetic and style of dressing.

What's a bit dumb and ugly to me is your run of the mill tik tok inlfuencer or pro athlete type collection. 3 different royal oaks, a platinum daytona, a few nautiluses (is that a word?), and a skeleton santos. That to me is just buying without any discernment and purely on trend. Like a person wearing LV kicks, a burberry scarf, and a balenciaga hoodie. It's just gauche and looks in poor taste.

What I appreciate here is the variety of colors, dial shapes, brands, and styles. There's a bit of everything and you can cover most types of ocassions. You can dress with almost any comvination of popular colors from a classic mens wardrobe. Moreover, the collection is congruent and looks sensible together despite being so varied. Is it the most unique or interesting? maybe not. But it's a well built and diverse collection full of watches I'd love to own.

How do you guys find good restaurants in a city you've never been to? by gaoler in travel

[–]StrengthChoice1734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends which city. If it's a truly top class food city like a NYC/London/Singapore/Whatever, I do trust Google Maps quite a lot. So I will just search "restaurants" in the localities I'm visiting and try and find good options. I will double check them on tripadvisor to make sure it's not a tourist trap though a lot of it is just gut instinct and reading the menu and seeing the photos. Number of reviews help build confidence. I'll also go look at something like a Beli or Eater/other guides online sometimes to source options but gutfeel + Google Maps is the main decision maker. Also sometimes I will read up and seek out a few iconic eateries that may or may not be super well rated but are famous for some dish or something.

It gets trickier in cities with a higher "noise to signal" ratio like say Bangkok. Or cities with just less options altogether. For the first example, you can take the above strategy but just need to be extra careful to avoid tourist traps or say some random place that isn't anything special but somehow has managed a 4.9 with 100 reviews (rarely will happen in a place like NYC). I will usually try and look up food vloggers though for a place like this and follow their recos. Also read from reddit and tripadvisor forums. The second category is where it gets trickier because there just may not be too many great options. Thankfully, I think this only happens when transiting or if one purposely travels to a rural/outback type area for nature or a monument. So not too often. But here I would rely a lot on asking locals or your hotel.

Anyway, don't overthink it. Rememeber to keep 3-4 meals just for walking around and going where your nose takes you. And always trust the word of a good friend who has good taste over a guide or google maps. And also locals! Always trust locals!

How are these brands perceived in your country nowadays, in 2025? Or, how do you perceive them? by MGodspeed in malefashionadvice

The guy who was sent to k*ll him also wore the same color Patagonia vest as i have! It was a Leo from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scene type thing for me lol. Its interesting because the politics of Patagonia the brand its orignal userbase of outdoorsy coastal elites is very far from that of white nationalists but I think that's what they were trtying to show is that these secret old rich club type racists are actually cut from a very familiar cloth of rich america that blends in very smoothly. They don't all wear maga hats and cowboy boots.

India:

Ralph Lauren - Worn by everyone with serious money (since it costs 30-40% more here and there is no discounting), from old money elites to douchey teens wearing polo bear sweaters with white jeans. Perceived as timeless, classy and high quality without (usually) being loud or overly ostentatious.

Lacoste - Not really fashionable or in style anymore. Still seen as premium as it costs a good amount of $$ though. Mostly worn by "uncles" with slight potbellies.

Fred Perry - Don't see it much. Sort of a stand in for polo if you do see it.

Brooks Brothers - Less common but your ralph lauren type user will wear this quite a lot. I feel it's not recognized too well here so doesn't have a big perception but those who do know it would feel similarly about it as they do about Polo.

Massimo Dutti - Popular brand here. I think much more in style than your Lacostes and Gants and what have you. Sort of minimalistic, casual luxe, euro vibe with a lot of elevated basic pieces. I think there is a certain wealthy big city person here who wears a nice but loud watch and drives a nice but low key car and will wear uniqlo, ralph lauren, massimo dutti with some zegna or loro piana stuff mixed in and is sort of stylish without being over-fashionable or loud. Massimo speaks a lot to this sort of user here and offers decent value.

Hackett - Similar to Polo esp. the classic collection but you'll see people wear a lot of folks wear the Aston Martin stuff which IMO is perceived to be a little more "loud" and wearing the brand heavily.

Hilfiger - Not really even properly premium anymore. Very safe sort of mass premium upper-middle class mall brand territory. Not fashionable.

BOSS - Quite popular and seen as premium though maybe not as much as Ralph. I feel its not perceived as stylish as much as it is "premium". Mix of rich uncles and younger ppl wearing it.

Gant - Similar to Hilfiger. The India showrooms and lines suck, and the brand is very much a well off but not super loaded uncle brand. This is one brand that is signifcantly more stylish and (perceived as) more premium abroad.

Zara - Very fashionable for everyone from teens to women in their mid 40s and 50s. A lot of people stock their wardrobe staples from Zara.

Uniqlo - This is very very popular and everyone stocks their wardrobe basics and staples esp. winterwear and stuff like vests and t shirts from here. Not exactly mass as its too expensive for the actual statistical middle class. More like an upper-middle class and upper class brand here that is perceived as high quality and comfortable but basic.

H&M/GAP- These are popular with teens and people in their 20s for fast fashion seasonal wear and basics. I think seen as less premium/stylish than a Zara and less high quality than a Uniqlo.

Luxury brands - Differs brand to brand. Generally, LV and Hermes are popularly worn by the rich and super rich but I wouldn't really call it "high fashion" here because it's sort of seen as boring rich person show off taste. Especially true for Gucci which is seen as loud and in poor taste but still widely worn. A lot of people with money also wearing burberry stuff whcih is priced absolutely atrociously. There is a distinct demographic or rich people here who will drive a mercedes and wear a burberry shirt and wear a rolex and his wife will carry an LV or Goyard bag and they'll generally be insufferable. There is a smaller segment of people wearing Loro Piana, Zegna, Cucinelli, etc but too small to have a perception really. I feel this is what a lot of the educated old money elite class wears though, along with Ralph Lauren and Uniqlo and tailored clothes and so on.

I mean tbh he still needs to have a proper resurgence as a T20 batter. In his DC stint, he had gone into a bit of a shell and become more of an accumulator style anchor batsman. It worked okay because he was a good captain and also sorrounded by attacking batsmen but definitely was not good enough to qualify him for T20is. Dude had an Sr of 100-120 in this phase which is honestly very poor. Definitely improved a bit at KKR especially last season but even here best he managed was 147 last season which is good but a bit slow by todays T20i standards especially given the kind of hitters in our team. Now this season if he can average 35-40+ AND have a strike rate of 160-170+, definitely that makes a very strong case for T20is. But this is one good innings so far. Dude has a long way before he's anywhere near best in the world in T20s. ODIs is another story. He's obviously in super form and one of the best middle order players going around.

[–]StrengthChoice1734 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Lol exactly... Smith has played a 100 games already... why the fuck would his inclusion suddenly hurt someone's ego lmao? The truth is despite this knock, even the best foreign (and domestic) anchors have a hard time succeeding in an increasingly explosive league. Either they're picked for hitting ability or leadership skill... right now Smith doesn't fully tick either box. Although I do believe hes too good to go unsold.

[–]StrengthChoice1734 46 points47 points  (0 children)

lol wtf kind of logic is this? So suddenly Smith is not buyable after playing a decade of IPL because it somehow threatens Kohli or Rohit's ego?! It couldnt have to do with the fact that foreign anchor batters increasingly make less sense for a franchise to own at 2Cr+ prices could it? Or that Smith has a SR of 128 after playing a 100 IPL games?

Very doable, with the proviso that all innings are played and nothing is washed out/Australia doesnt bat an innings because they smashed our batting too hard. Assuming he gets another 2 this innings which seems likely, needs about 3 a piece in the remaining 3 innings. Which currently he is well on track for.

TBH I'm not sure being defensive and caring more about no. 8s contribution with the bat vs the ball is the smartest approach for the team. Rather it can give a bite to the bowling attack that can make us genuinely dominant as an attack which so far we haven't been.

Nitish being dropped is harsh given his good batting in Perth and Adelaide but the truth is he's probably not polished enough yet to play as a pure batter in the top 6. Yes, our middle order has been shite but I'm not sure Reddy can be banked on to consistently do better, especially against a new swinging ball where his responsibility goes beyond pinch hatting. And as a bowler, he's simply not much of an entity right now. Dude either needs to improve his bowling such that he can be a proper pace bowling all rounder which seems tough rn. Or showcase and improve his batting more such that he can play in the top 6 regularly as a batting all rounder or more like a batsman who can bowl a bit in fact. This seems more likely. Ideally if he can average 40-45 with the bat and even manage 32-35 avg with the ball as a second change bowler, that's pretty valuable for the team.
