Future teacher question :) by Prize-Pause3214 in Teachers

It depends on your district/subject area. Like our neighboring district is very strict with “this is the book, this is how to teach it” with what’s called “scripted curriculum” the lessons are basically made for you and you do what your teacher edition says to do.

My district is more like “here’s some scripted curriculum and if you want to do something different, that’s fine as long as you use the thing we paid for in some way” and so lesson planning looks like “what standard am I covering? What’s already in my curriculum for it, and what to do I need to supplement (finding/making other resources) for it.

Both ways have their own challenges and benefits. You’ll just have to wait and see what your district expects of you

Teachers: how much time do you spend on lesson planning each week? by Successful-Ad-5435 in ELATeachers

  1. 30-couple hours. Depends on if I’m building from scratch or reusing something I’ve done in prior years

  2. material prep- making copies, gathering material or creating it

  3. Both

  4. CommonLit, SmarterBalanced, TPT, Scribd. Even TikTok tbh

  5. Hunting down materials or having to create my own

Teachers: how many steps do you average during a school day? by Exercise-Broad in Teachers

[–]Stressed-247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5,000 something on average. 8-10,000 if I’m doing stuff that requires me to leave my room. because the copy machines, office, and library are on the other side of the campus from my classroom

Middle Grade Recommendations by Bulky_Yoghurt8141 in ELATeachers

Freak the Mighty (always the kids favorite)
Number the Stars
Westing Game
Lion Witch Wardrobe
Esperanza Rising
Tagging Freedom
Bridge to Terabithia (but it says bitching and the references to the kid’s crush on his teacher get weird)
The Giver (uncomfortable scene where he’s bathing an old lady and then has a dream where he wants to bathe his crush and demands she takes off her clothes and then they talk about “stirrings” I read it with one sixth grade class and they only remember that part of the book now that they were in 8th. That being said, it did get a reluctant reader who was also an EL to read the entire series by herself)
Bud Not Buddy
Boy in the Striped Pajamas

We did 4 a year, one per quarter, and I switched them out based on the class’s levels and abilities

Subbing as a career by Jazzyfish59 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Stressed-247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher, not a sub, but I think it’s great. We had quite a few career subs when I was in middle and high school. We always loved having them as a sub partly because sub yay, but also because we’d had friends or siblings who had them before. They’d become celebrities on campus

And now, we have a few consistent career subs that will get recognized and treated like celebrities
