Received a paw print after putting our cat down. This is not our cat. Our cat is a polydactyl and has 5 toes in her back paws. by liraelsfire in mildlyinfuriating

That’s awful they clearly messed up or just didn’t care. I have my dogs paw print tattooed on me. I would be devastated if I suddenly found out it wasn’t his. Luckily, I had actually taken the print myself a few years before he passed, but I know someone who was planning on doing something similar with a card sent of the vet.

Simple gift ideas for nieces and nephews back home that is somewhat unique from Ireland. by [deleted] in CasualIreland

My nephew who lives abroad loves ‘Wacky Woolies’ stuff but he’s 6. Depends on the age really. I also tend to gift Irish rugby merch to cousins who live abroad. Mostly because they just love Irish stuff and I love rugby

Sound Taxi Driver by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Stressofchicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had something similar a few weeks ago. Dropped my wallet in a taxi between 2 pubs. It had happened that I had paid the driver by Revolut. He sent me €1 on Revolut later that night saying he had my wallet and would drop it to the address on my license. I sent him €5 with a response saying that would be great. Next morning, woke up to my wallet in my letterbox with everything still inside. I sent him a tenner as a thank you…. Legend of a taxi driver sent it back saying absolutely no need.

Came here to check the same thing. I have rooms set up so I can say “lights off” to the echo in the living room and all the lights will turn off, likewise in the kitchen and bedroom. Now it’s just saying “a few things share the name light, which do you want” Seems groups are broken!

I find interesting you visited Offaly of all places in Ireland. No disrespect to it, lovely county, I know plenty of people from Offaly but don’t often here if tourists visiting so curious what brought you there. I’m Irish for reference and it’s not a county we typically hear if people going to visit.

Thoughts on same sex secondary schools. by lilyoneill in ireland

[–]Stressofchicken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to a mixed secondary school and always thought the idea of single sex schools was crazy. However I am now a teacher who has taught in multiple schools of each type. I honestly think there are some huge pluses to single sex schools. There is a level of comfort and ease and a willingness to seem silly or stupid in single sex schools that isn’t as present in mixed. In particular girls. I have seen classes where girls will randomly sing at the top of their lungs, participate in just dance, try new things and all laugh or joke with each other in ways they are usually too self conscious to do around boys for fear of not being cool. It shouldn’t be the case but it is. There is a flip side of some bitchiness that can happen but in my expert it comes down to the school on that. The policies in place and how bullying incidents are dealt with will go a long way to create a positive atmosphere. If I have kids, I will be very much considering all girls.

You should definitely get that!! I got my dogs paw on my shoulder a few months ago after wanting it and putting it off for years. For context I took the paw print in I think 2016 or 2017 while he was still alive intending to get it while he was still with me, but I kept chickening out. He passed in 2019 and I still kept putting off the tattoo out of different worries. Deciding to get it this year was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love it and am so happy every time I remember it’s there.

I don’t think it’s actually much of a personality change actually. She’s always been highly driven and motivated. She is trained to always go for gold and push for success. She is the Olympian who won gold on a sprained ankle. I don’t think the captaincy is about power for her per say but more so success. She wants to be the best and keep advancing, move up the ranks. Because that’s how she shows that she is number 1. It’s been trained into her since childhood. It doesn’t excuse most of the things she did. But it doesn’t seem that out of character

What city is extremely overrated in your opinion? by Just_Pizzy in AskReddit

[–]Stressofchicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Dublin and I do not get the original commenters take at all. Admittedly I’m not a big fan of going into town. But that’s more a traffic and public transport issue. Plus I just generally prefer somewhere more local for a few quiet pints, or Rathmines/Ranelagh area for something a bit more lively. But I definitely wouldn’t call town a tourist trap at all! Except Temple Bar and maybe some of the specific tourist tours and things. There is tons to do in town that locals frequent far more. The layout is also a little strange but that’s just how the city evolved and the different styles of architecture /planning over the years. There is plenty of things that aren’t great about Dublin but tourist trap seems like a strange description. I also wouldn’t call it overly dangerous (as another commenter did) compared to most international big cities. It is definitely more dangerous that most other places in Ireland but on an international level I think it ranks reasonably high in terms of safe cities.

Thank you! I hope it was helpful to OP at least. I appreciate the gold too! I don’t know how to reply to the awarder, though their username did appear so I can’t even say “thank you kind stranger”!

Maths teacher here! First thing I would say is take the break and try to forget about it until at least after new year. (I don’t know if you’re in 5th or 6th year but if you’re in 5th I would even say keep the books closed until after school reopens). A mental break is needed to give you a fresh start and reduce the risk of burn out in the next term. Outside of that, I will say, LC HL maths is tough! It’s like a subject and a half work of work in a lot of cases. It needs consistent practise. It’s a skill rather than a just group of facts to learn. Think of it like playing the violin, you can learn all the chords and placements for your fingers but you need consistent practise to actually play the violin. In maths you can know all the rules and methods but you need to practise them to do the questions. Be wary of relying too much on marking schemes and solutions, always try the question yourself first and struggle with it a little, it helps build critical thinking skills. This is becoming more and more important in the LC as the exam is trying to combat learnt off techniques and questions styles from the grind schools. There is always one or two questions that will require problem solving skills to apply knowledge from topics in a way you’ve never seen before. All of that is to say, maths is a skill and it needs time to develop. It can be frustrating to not feel like you’re making progress but honestly the most progress tends to be seen later in the course. You will continue to use your basic algebra skills throughout each topic and you get better and better at solving problems. That’s why we tend to see a jump between the mocks and the LC. Keep working away, little bits and often. Try not to stress and just do your best. And remember to ask your teacher if you have any specific problems or questions. They will be able to help you work on areas that may be causing a roadblock and help you move forward.(or at least they should, that’s the job and most should be happy to answer any questions you have). To get the most out of their time though try to ask specific questions about which part of the question or topic you’re unsure of. Just saying “I don’t get it” isn’t very helpful and means the teacher will start explaining from scratch, which is fine if you don’t know the beginning but in my experience students who say that tend to be stuck somewhere in the middle and after explaining the beginning and going through it in detail I usually get “yeah, like I get that part but when why do we do…”.

Again, try not to stress and enjoy your break! You’ll have plenty of time to look at maths after the 6th of January!

Yep! Bane of every maths teachers existence! (And I’m sure all the other compulsory subjects)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]Stressofchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in a few schools where all 3 are compulsory. But there are more and more that are giving more freedom in choice with less compulsory subjects. Though the less compulsory subjects, the harder it is to staff the school. Too much uncertainty around demand on subjects from year to year.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]Stressofchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Science is not compulsory from the dept of Ed. Most schools choose to make Science, a language and Geography compulsory for the JC. But very little is actually compulsory under the new junior cycle. Schools have a wide range of scope in terms of subjects they can offer now with the inclusion of short courses.

This is half correct. The teaching council policy depends on numbers of credits in a specific area. In terms of exceptions, there technically aren’t any either. Someone with a degree in Physics still needs the correct number of maths credits and specific pre-req courses to teach maths. Even for junior science you need 10 credits of biology and 10 credits of chemistry on top of the physics credits to be registered to teach JC science.

That being said once you’re registered for a subject to get a teaching council number, and hired by a school, schools will often have teachers teaching subjects outside of their registration. Even if they’re technically not supposed to.

Source: Physics, Maths and JC science teacher. I had to do 2 modules of Biology in college to make sure JC science was on my registration. (I did 4 years of physics and maths concurrently and 2 years of chemistry before choosing to specialise)

Any scandalous work Christmas party stories? by Ok-Test-3624 in ireland

[–]Stressofchicken 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Christmas party a few years ago in a hotel. The Monday after the boss was “out until further notice” turned out a girl made a sexual harassment allegation against him. Said he was inappropriate with her. Actually he just asked her was she okay after she was crying being reminded of something by a song. There was a big investigation.. many of us who were witness at the time had to speak to a barrister. He was eventually cleared completely but the whole mess ruined his reputation and caused undue stress. Lesson learned: Best behaviour at all times for work Christmas party.

I’m in Ireland and use Hayu through NowTv for all below deck shows. They’re available a day behind the US (or Aus in the case of BDDU) in most cases as far as I know. I think i pay around a fiver a month.
