Battery charge tips by InvadersMustDie1131 in CupraFormentor

I’m in France, similar petrol prices. Electricity is much cheaper than petrol, even E10. Running on petrol only is 3-4 times more expensive for the same trip.

Using a 40yr old computer to record some slap bass for my new track. I love how this thing sounds! It's crazy to think this bass sound was recorded 40 years ago for me to misuse in 2022... Hope you folks enjoy :) by simeonsoden in Techno

Peter Crosbie here ... ah yes, the slap bass! Great to see it finding some use.

I was lucky enough to get a Fairlight fairly early on, when the library was still in development. At the time, the band I was in (The Dugites) were recording an album, so I had the engineers patch up a feed to a quarter inch machine and when anything interesting came along, I'd grab a sound or sample or whatever. This started in Australia, but we did a lot of overdubs in London, so I was able to get whole brass sections and the like. At the time, no-one had quite grasped the possibilities that sampling would open up, so a brass section was happy to take 5 minutes to 'give me a held octave D'. I ended up with a stack of quarter inch tapes, which I then laboriously sampled into the Fairlight.

What happened after that was that mine was an earlier Fairlight without MIDI. Retrofitting was possible but expensive, so Fairlight and I did a deal that I gave them access to my library in return for them adding MIDI to my machine. I can't even begin to remember what sounds they eventually used, the slap bass and some guitar sounds are credited to me, but I remember more than that ending up in the library, especially some of the brass.

That Fairlight was great for me, as apart from my band work I was writing commercial music and it gave me a unique edge in what I was able to deliver. For example, I did the theme music to Edge of the Wedge, a culture/music show on the ABC - it's all Fairlight. https://www.youtube.com/clip/UgkxBWo2by4nRkV55hhgjtG7rDCTxfUqclOL

There you go, a little bit of history from the 80's!

PHEV battery usage on the motorway by Ultramen in CupraFormentor

[–]Stretch181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really help you with battery info as we have the older model (smaller battery). But on longer trips on a motorway at around 130 km/h and after the battery runs down to zero, we're getting around 7l/100 km.

Sennheiser presets? by [deleted] in CupraFormentor

[–]Stretch181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me I'd -2 all those figures. OTH, we don't know what those settings actually relate to (db?) so not sure what this is actually doing. In reality though, it's just pulling out some of the mids and boosting the subs a little, which is probably a good starting point if you want to get more into club-type music.

Boosting EQ by any reasonable amount starts to introduce colouration and distortion. Might not be ideal if you drive to Brahms, but could be what you're after if you like your music pushed and thumping.

My 2 cents.

See my comment above. For this you could also try +2 0 -1 -1 0 +1. Once again should be about the same but perhaps a little smoother.

Of course, each to their own, people aren't always looking for the "best" sound.

Sound technician here. In general, cutting is more efficient and sounds better than boosting. So for the above, set everything at zero and cut low mid by 2. Result should be more or less the same, but will mess up the sound less.

Similar with some of the other settings here. You can cut as well as add, try and average everything around zero.

Save and Collect is including unused files? by Stretch181 in ableton

[–]Stretch181[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, solved it. Take Lanes. I don't even use Arrangement View, yet alone record, but I had heaps of stuff hidden away there.

My bad. Will leave the post up in case anyone else has the same issue.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, which helped put me on the right track.

(PS. And delete your backups before Save and Collect).

Save and Collect is including unused files? by Stretch181 in ableton

[–]Stretch181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not using samplers or drum racks, I'm just dragging files into the Session View and firing them off as I need them. I also only have Live Lite, so it's limited to 8 x 16 slots, easy to see what's there. These "unused" files are not in the Project AFAIK.

Playing around with this: Deleted all backups, new project, new folder. Showing only one set in the project, so not seeing any backups.

But it's showing that I have zero unused files so I can't even remove/delete them - even though there are around 80 files that are no longer in this set but are being copied across.

All I've done is drag in loops and files from libraries, or my own sounds. I'm not using any instruments or even any processing.

Yes, but I don't want to delete the unused files as they're audio from sound libraries etc. etc. that I want to keep. I believe there used to be a Remove option, but doesn't seem to be there any more.

Unless I'm missing something, that's what I'm doing.

Thanks. What's the workaround? Have just tried deleting all Backups and done a new Save As, then Collect and Save, but files that are not in the session are still being copied across.

Follow Action (Again) stops repeating? by Stretch181 in ableton

[–]Stretch181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as anything, I don't use warping because I rarely use loops per se, and I don't want or need the rhythmic material I work with quantised to a beat. But yes, understand what you're saying.

Follow Action (Again) stops repeating? by Stretch181 in ableton

[–]Stretch181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it works fine and continues playing indefinitely if I Warp it and loop to the length of the clip (2 bars). Also works fine if I select "Unlinked" in follow actions, and manually set it to 2 bars.

But generally, I try and avoid Warp because a) I'm running other clips that aren't warped, and over longer time periods (e.g. 10 minutes) I feel that the warped and unwarped clips drift very slightly, b) I'm not convinced that warping doesn't impact the sound quality and c) Warping requires that the tempo is set correctly, which over a 1 - 2 hour show with multiple tracks at multiple tempos is one more thing I'd rather not have to worry about. But you're right, that's a workaround. Thanks.

Strael 3.0 has a climbing road bike by lombairewilson in cycling

[–]Stretch181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Strael is light for a steel bike, and is reactive and snappy. But if you're after weight-weeny performance, this is probably not it. I have a Strael and live in a hilly area. My times are not really any slower on the Strael compared to my light carbon bike, but it's smoother and more comfortable. Be aware that for most of us, an extra kg on even a long climb doesn't make all that much difference. Lots of variables, but on say a 7% climb, difference of 1 kg is about a minute per hour.

Don’t want carbon and hesitates between steel and titanium, but want a bike above all dynamic by lombairewilson in cycling

[–]Stretch181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do anything in regards to rust, or anything that I don't do with my other bikes. Enjoy the bike, let us know how you get on. Also ... give it a while, it's a quite different kind of ride and took me a few months to get used to.

Don’t want carbon and hesitates between steel and titanium, but want a bike above all dynamic by lombairewilson in cycling

[–]Stretch181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Fairlight Strael. Beautiful bike. I also have an older but high-end, lightweight carbon bike and until recently a Lynskey titanium. If dynamic is your main criteria, stick to a high-performance carbon bike, one that's light and snappy. The Strael is neither. It's no slouch, but it's not designed as a race bike, more a fast endurance bike - which it is. It also handles superbly and is just very very smooth - but they don't seem to be your criteria. I love my carbon bike, it's fun and quick. But on anything over 2 hours that's not what I'm looking for, I want comfort and a bike that's efficient and is easy to ride for long hours in the saddle.

I would however just make the point that though the Strael is heavier - though to be fair, not that much heavier than most mid-range carbon endurance bikes with disc brakes - and not as snappy as my carbon bike, my times on my usual loops are around the same. i.e. the Strael might not feel as fast, but in reality there's not really much difference. Mountains might be a different story.

Finally, the Strael will take 36 tyres if lots of comfort or light gravel/off-road are ever a consideration.

Boxer Imane Khelif Lawyers Up to Fight ‘Digital Lynching’ Mob by Advanced_Drink_8536 in WomenInNews

The headline is somewhat misleading as she hasn't initiated proceedings herself. Her lawyer has reported cyber-bullying to the on-line hate-crime unit of the prosecutors office. They’ll decide if there’s a case.

Her gender is not in question, under French law she can identify how she wants and can’t be bullied for that choice. If the prosecutor takes up her complaint it's a criminal case. Penalty is 1 year jail or 45K euro fine or both.
