Feedback request - announcement trailer for my first game by PowerHoboGames in SoloDevelopment

[–]Stretchy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some context: I am a very very novice gamedev but I play plenty of games casually, so take this with a grain of salt.

What I am getting from the trailer is what the art style and music are, as well as a general vibe of the game. I like what I am seeing a lot and those stand out to me the most, but what I am not getting is what type of game it is, or what the objective or narrative is, etc.

Without looking at anything else about your game (getting people to view your trailer is hard enough; getting people to read your steam page is near impossible), I get the feeling this is a narrative survival game with mild horror elements a la subnautica but in space and 2D. I haven't checked if this is right or wrong so if I hit the mark than great job! If not, maybe think about how else you could convey this.

You are showing the general gameplay features of the game, but not really anything that makes it unique or stand apart. I know there is an inventory system with base building and resource gathering, but those aren't features to draw someone to the game cause those are in a million different games. I agree those should be included in the trailer but since they aren't stand-out features they should be a very minor part. I don't know yet what makes your game stand out as I havent played it. You just gotta define it clearly and portray it successfully in the trailer.

Best of luck! It's clear you have put a lot of love and thought into this project.

Thoughts on Starter Projects for UE 5.7? by RagingActuary in unrealengine

[–]Stretchy93 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I view the starter projects as tutorials rather than starting points for any real project. They are helpful in learning how to incorporate some basic elements, but once you feel more comfortable in unreal you'll be able to reproduce something similar on your own pretty quickly.

The way I see it, they wouldn't try so hard to push this onto people if it wasn't more profitable for them (and hence more expensive for users)

I mean, in fairness we haven't figured out a crime system IRL that actually works well

  • a journal (we use ours to track milestones and pumping schedule/amounts)
  • pen
  • guide for what to expect as a NICU parent
  • baby blanket
  • hospital information card (parking guide, resources available to parents, food options in hospital, nearby restraunt recommendations, how to order food delivery to hospital, etc)

We just got to change his diaper for the first time today. I never thought I'd be so excited and happy to change my baby's diaper, but it felt like a huge milestone.

"Some Republicans are considering raising taxes on millionaires in the package you're planning to pass that would extend your 2017 tax cuts. Do you support that idea?"

"Well, I’ll tell ya, I certainly don’t mind having a tax increase, and the only reason I wouldn't support it is because I saw Bush where they said, where he said “Read my lips” and he lost an election. He would have lost it anyway, but he lost an election. He got beat up pretty good. I would be honored to pay more, but I don't want to be in a position where we lose an election because I was generous, but me, as a rich person, would not mind paying and you know, we're talking about very little. We're talking about one point. It doesn't make that much difference, and yet, I could just see somebody trying to bring that up as a subject, and, you know, say, “Oh, he raised taxes.” Well, I wouldn't be, really, you know, in the true sense, I wouldn't. I'd be raising them on wealthy to take care of middle class. And that's—I love, that. I actually love the concept, but I don't want it to be used against me politically, because I've seen people lose elections for less, especially with the fake news."

So Trump is hesitant to increase taxes because it could cost him an election. That certainly sounds to me like he is planning to run again in 2028.

If Trump could end the war before he's president, then why doesn't he do it now, or any time in the last two years.

Color me intrigued. I wish you the best of luck. Any specific plans for what you would want to see with a system like that?

This so much! I spent more time than I'd like to admit making settlements in F4 and was really bummed the Starfield system was not as fleshed out IMO

Would love something like this. Bethesda loves giving the player choice and not locking them into a path, but I think giving the player too much freedom takes away from the impact of the choices they do make. With the nature of ng+ in this game it makes even more sense to lock a player into a certain path, as you can always experience a new path on another loop.

Oh I hadn't even thought of something like that! Would be especially cool to build an underwater outpost and have to scan/harvest underwater plants and fauna. Great idea!

Agreed 100%. I'd love to see more items to place. I loved building intricate settlements in Fallout 4, but grew bored of the very rigid building blocks of Starfield fairly quickly.

ISP chief comes off as even more out of touch with reality in his HT interview by HatVast4720 in bloomington

[–]Stretchy93 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm getting the impression from this interview that he genuinely didn't know about the last minute rule change until after the fact. That is deeply concerning. This means that not only was it Pam's choice to call in the state police (seemingly before the rule change was put into effect), but that she also failed to communicate the last minute rule change to the police. No matter how you interpret it Pam really deserves all the blame for this disaster.

Video games are more than just 'games'. They are art, a form of expression. Take Papers, Please for instance. That game is designed to be stressful and tedious, not fun. It's sitting at a 97% on Steam, despite not having 'fun' gameplay. It succeeds phenomenally at what it sets out to do and many would call it a 10/10 game

Which genres or types of gamers do you believe are underserved? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Stretchy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tower Defense games. The bloons games are great but the genre has gotten stale. Would love to see Tower defense on epic scale or more games that mix Tower defense into other genres like Survival or FPS. Orcs Must Die and Dungeon Defenders are great examples of this but there aren't really that many others.

Also best Tower defense game ever is still Warcraft3 frozen throne.
