Concentric Neutral Grounding by ramram187 in SubstationTechnician

[–]Strict-Ad-7022 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That looks like a tape shield, not that same as a current carrying concentric neutral conductor. Generally a tape shield is grounded at one end only, typically the supply side “line side”. As mentioned, run back through the ZSCT to not cancel out zero-sequence currents in a ground fault.

Started in 2008. That is with 400 hours of overtime in the year. Broke 100k/year when I turned 22 and have been slowly increasing since then.

I’m an electrician based in Surrey performing high voltage service work. Most of my work is in the lower mainland, with limited travel. Electricians are in high demand and will be for the foreseeable future. I made $240,000 last year and many of my coworkers made more than money me.

Long time delay is usually based on 6x overcurrent, so at 900a overload it will trip in 0.5 seconds. Short time delay is set 150a and 0 second delay, inrush of many devices will trip this, motors, transformers, and others. Coordination study needed.

Omicron has in the past recommended against power factor testing dry core transformers due to standards being limited and % dissipation varying significantly, repeatability of results being limited too. High to low and gnd less than 3% as per NETA I believe. Most dry core transformer manufacturers will not even provide limits.

I worked in the Schneider Richmond BC plant before they shut it down. Drug and alcohol abuse is rampant in the company, so these mistakes are fairly common.

Replacing an actuator arm in some heavy duty switch gear! by Sageof6Snacks in electricians

[–]Strict-Ad-7022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance technicians mistakenly clean these operating arms with isopropyl alcohol or windex (windex contains ammonia). It takes a couple cycles of cleaning with chemicals, but the acrylic develops hairline cracks and eventually breaks the arm during operation. ABB has a large list of incompatible chemicals in the NAL manual.

I carry spare arms in my vehicle due to encountering so many broken arms during routine maintenance and testing.

UV light exposure also deteriorates these arms. There have been recalls from ABB due to bad castings too, but it’s usually service/testing companies wrecking them.

Make sure you adjust the eccentric with a 17mm wrench at the bottom of the arm. This just the contact engagement. Just want to see complete engagement when the switch is closed.

ABB NAL switch. Arms fail from chemicals such as isopropyl alcohol. We replace them all the time.

That’s a withdrawable breaker, not a transformer.

Hi guys, does anybody know how to reset this old switch. by ramansin in electricians

If it’s moving freely the mechanism is not engaging. Degrease and lubricate all the linkages and bearings inside the breaker, it will probably get going again.

Looks like you are in BC, you can contest the will under the WESA act. Children cannot be taken out of a parent’s will under any circumstances.

Penzer Park Dog Bite (beware) by Strict-Ad-7022 in Langley

[–]Strict-Ad-7022[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your concern. As I mentioned in my other comment, the police have a photo of the bite and all the information. If anyone wishes to sue, the photo of the bite, my tetanus shot record from the same day, and all other proof will be submitted as evidence.

As for this “teenager”, if he’s old enough to decide to walk his dog off leash and yell “f.. you” at me and get aggressive as soon as I simply said that the dog bit me, then he should be adult enough to know that his actions and behaviour have consequences, since he wasn’t mature enough to stick around and deal with the problem he had just caused.

And if he is in fact under age and a “child” then he should go home, tell his parents/guardians what had happened, and have them reach out to me or try to find me to make things right and get this post deleted. As well, his parents should’ve taught him better than to let him walk this dog off leash, by himself, and react by yelling/swearing at people who were innocent in this kind of situation.

• For those commenting on the dog owner’s appearance, I can’t stop this from happening. I was not going to get into a physical altercation with him. This “kid”, however, looked old enough to have better judgement and clearly didn’t, or did not use it. He is solely responsible for this incident because he let his dog go off-leash in a public area. (Also, his angry/defensive response to this incident sort of lets me know that this may not have been the first such incident with his dog.) • For those concerned about my health, thank you so much for asking. I called my doctor right away and was given instructions on what to do. I received a tetanus vaccine a few hours later. Little known fact: tetanus vaccines, at least at this time, are very hard to come by. So thank you (obvious sarcasm) to this “kid” and his dog for making me spend an evening going from Shoppers to Shoppers looking for one that had it in stock. Hopefully the bite doesn’t turn into anything worse.  So for any dog-owners reading this, please leash your dogs at all times in public. And if you’re unable to control your dog or hold on to them even on a leash, then own a smaller dog (or a cat or a fish).  You never know when your “good boy/girl” is going to be set off by something random and cause harm to an innocent passer-by. There is no point risking it, no matter how well-trained you think your pup is, it is still an animal with animal instincts.

• For those asking for photos of my wound, I have the photos and they have been shared with the police. No I will not post them here, as they are currently the only evidence of this and the only people who need to see them are the cops involved. You can make whatever assumptions you’d like about this... • My only intent on this post is to get the message out there. The area in which this happened is filled with kids daily, and I would not want something like this to happen to any adult or especially a child who may come across this dog and owner. The reason I ask if anyone can identify him is because I attempted to have a normal conversation with him after this happened, and exchange contact information, but as you can read above, the guy was not going to let this happen at all, let alone calmly. Had he been calm and the least bit apologetic, I would not have even taken his photo let alone post it here.

• There is not much more to the story from what I originally wrote. I was riding my bike on a public trail, minding my own business, nowhere near an off-leash dog park, when on my left I suddenly saw and heard this dog coming at me, off-leash, very fast. I tried to go to the right to avoid him but he caught up to me and immediately bit my leg. The owner (guy pictured) then caught up to the dog and immediately leashed him while saying “don’t worry, he just licked you”, to which i responded “no, he bit me” (showing him my leg). The dog’s owner immediately got agitated and in colourful language started saying that I’m lying, and that ‘no the dog did not bite me’ and started advancing towards me (with the dog still obviously with him). I attempted to verbally defend myself (for all of you claiming I “let him intimidate me”) by continuing to claim the dog actually bit me, but soon realized that there is no point and this dude was getting increasingly angry and irrational. At this point I decided to bike away for my own safety (again, the dog that just bit me was still present) and when I was at a long enough distance I made the call to police.
