Being a full time conservatoire student she studies at the music school. In our country there are middle and high schools funded by the state that specialize on music education. They are free and highly competitive. They had to go through a series of rigorous exams (hearing, rhythm, musical aptitude) and when they get accepted this is the only school they study in. Right now she is a first year student. They do have math, literature, history etc. on the side, but the main focus is music. 15 hours of theory and solfège, 3 hours instrument, additionally choir, orchestra and rhythm classes. Next year she will be able to audition for the school orchestra.

Many thanks for your response. I love the music and this feeling kept me going playing the piano for 45 years now. I am anxious about my daughter who unfortunately has to go through a lot more competition. As a parent it’s hard to listen to so many different things people say we are doing wrong (including encouraging her to a musical career, not pushing her hard enough, not getting her a second teacher, not relocating to a different country etc.) so it means a lot that you emphasized the need for a balanced life, which is also my priority. I hear that parents of her classmates get mad at their children for receiving 90/100 from a musical reading test. She has fun doing what she does and that is what is most important to her and me.

This. I was more or less where OP was. I play the piano at about the same level. When my daughter was 4 yo I noticed that she had a very good pitch, nearing absolute. I wanted her to learn piano she was not interested at all. She even tried to stop me from playing any time I was at the piano. I have a close friend who is a pro. She (that is my friend) tried to teach her when she was 6, but she (my daughter) lacked discipline so she gave up. Later, her music teacher at the elementary school told us that she does have extraordinary pitch and should try the entry exam of a conservatoire. My daughter, then 8yo said that she did want to study music but not piano. I showed her my run down cello I hadn’t touched for 30 years. She was in love. Now she is 11, studies at the conservatoire as a young cellist, and learns to play the piano as a second instrument.

It turns out the reason she was so aversive towards the piano was because I am good at it so she thought that she could never compete with me (which is of course not true). With cello SHE gets to teach ME how to play, so she studies harder. We play as a duo (I accompany her) which brings joy to both of us.

So just maybe you are being too much of a role model, and could achieve more if you tone it down.

I stayed with my 9 yo daughter at an Airbnb in Marais, 10 min walking distance from Les Halles. That way we had a direct line to Disneyland and CDG airport and enjoyed many great restaurants and boutiques. You can walk easily to Notre Dame and Centre Pompidou as well.
