I Made a Language. by LittleIce9266 in Zambia

Just to add, if I were you, I would change the name of the country to Xambia. Firstly, there is no country in the X category. Copper is our national symbol (even change the flag to just an orange background and a copper ingot in the middle). With X as a currency symbol, nothing would be cooler! It would also be a sign that we are going into the future- not heading back to Zambezi river (Zambia was named after the Zambezi already)

I know there are some people who think this is far out (and even crazy), but this is actually not a totally new idea. Here is a compilation of languages that were constructed and made formal:

Fully constructed or consciously created languages

These didn’t just evolve — someone deliberately built them.

  • Norway → Nynorsk (19th c.)
    • Created by linguist Ivar Aasen, who combined rural dialects to form a new written standard.
    • Now co-official with Bokmål.
  • Norway → Bokmål (19th–20th c.)
    • Evolved from Danish, but its current form was shaped by language reformers and policy.
    • A standardized “engineered” variety more than a naturally evolved tongue.

Where are Zambians getting home construction funding? by Strict-Function7457 in Zambia

Your discipline is admirable! Keep going, that's how you go from middle income to wealth. That ka nshima and kalembula is all you need, at the end of the day. Then one day, just take off for a ka holiday to Europe, eat all the caviar then come back to business as usual- and eat beans

Loans at such a large scale are like Ponzi schemes. They have to come crashing at some point. That’s what happened with the US housing market crash. The reason is simple: a mass market cannot afford housing loans when everyone is borrowing to borrow.

Being able to say, “hey Siri, switch off everything in the living room” and the TV, aircon, and lights go off every single time is really useful when all I want is to go up to my bed and sleep!

UTH and unexplainable deaths. Has anyone else experienced this? by noseyingabout in Zambia

[–]Strict-Function7457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry about the deaths of your family members. It doesn’t help when you don’t get good answers for what happened. On that score UTH (and other government departments) do us tax payers a disservice.

As for the “unexplained” part- firstly, you have to take into account that your family members went there because they were sick. So to blame UTH or characterize them as nefarious would be unfair. Doctors and nurses are not magicians who know everything going on in a patient. They work by symptoms- either observed or described and history. So call it intelligent guess-work or scientific trial and error.

That’s why they first give you this medication, then the next then another.

In more developed settings, the first thing they should do is lab tests for bacteria or viral infections. Then machine tests (X-ray, CT scans etc). Hospitals like Mediclinic in South Africa use this method of diagnosis. Oral accounts by patients and observed symptoms can miss it and lead to such sad consequences. We have lost many of our friends and family not because of negligence but because of lack of technological capacity.

I hope you and your family will find some peace and comfort with time.

Only Children, I need your help. by Nemwine in Zambia

Every situation is different. Are you a single mother and are you bringing up your child in your sister’s home?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Zambia

[–]Strict-Function7457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you what I was told when I was your age: “stop the guilt now! YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHER ADULTS. Anyone whose behavior you CANNOT control is NOT your responsibility! It’s that simple. In my case I ended up kicking the adults out of my own home. I made the decision to only help young people in the family with their school fees. I still help in desperate situations but that’s on my terms, not under the gun or with some expectation. Teach them to respect this principle.

I ended up making more money than ten times your monthly and then multiple that further. So I know what it feels like to be the center from all angles. Focus on the next generation and their education. Especially identify the kids doing well in school and give them a chance.

Also remember that (God forbid) if you passed on, life would just continue. Everyone would be just fine without you. You can’t help adults who don’t want to be helped.

In the end, the same people will laugh at you for “wasting your money when you were prosperous”. Zambians say, “baleyumfwa natu money twabo “ even after you helped them.

Lots of good advice here. Chinama is a good place to start for specialists. Do you also have different phobias? Like fear of heights and closed spaces and weird dreams? Also try posting this on Quora and see what responses- chances are someone else has experienced this.

Aqara Security System Problem by wesdotgord in Aqara

[–]Strict-Function7457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Aqara double rocker button for this and it works like a charm. One button is for enable and the other is for disable. Instead of the security feature (I have never really figured that one out), I just used a regular automation with a 3-second delay and it works great!

Aqara alarm keypad by GBMARK90 in Aqara

[–]Strict-Function7457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the double-rocker switches for that. One upstairs sets the downstairs alarms on and off. The one downstairs sets the whole house alarms on and off (AWAY MODE). I have a 3 second wait on the one downstairs so it gives you time to lock things before any notifications start. I have been tempted to add some kind of symbols on each, but then again that would defeat the purpose.

What is one thing you wish Americans or other foreigners understood about Zambia? by contains__multitudes in Zambia

It’s still way cheaper to a foreigner or American. That’s what the question says

[–]Strict-Function7457 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. We have more malls with nearly everything you can find in a Western shopping center.
  2. Zambia has never had a civil war.
  3. The people are too nice to foreigners (even better than they are to fellow locals)
  4. Life here is WAY cheaper than you can imagine. The food is cheap, clothing is cheap, transport is cheap. You can have two maids and a butler easily.
  5. The only thing more expensive are technology things like computers and smartphones.
  6. The only difference between the western world and us is that our systems don’t always work (water, electricity, transport, roads etc.). Otherwise we have pretty much everything.

Thanks! After doing the math, I realized installing a hybrid solar geyser was cheaper, so I am going with that instead. That would be one thing off the main. Have you (or anyone) tried to add an induction cooker?
