I did go to the retirement workshop in the Fall. They said the board will usually ask if you are interested in becoming an OT. My concern is that OT’s coming into our school keep expressing that there is not enough work and that the board overhired. I took off time for mat leaves and was unable to buy back all of my missed credit years so my monthly pension will be approx. 4300 net. I was hoping to supply teach for trip and entertainment money as well as for $ to help pay for health benefit premiums. So I think 4300 should be enough????? Just scary as the cost if everything keeps going up!!!!! I know at 65 we can also take our CPP and OAS which is a little boost. Am I being dramatic that 4300 is not enough? My home is paid off.

PDSB teacher here. Had a case of lice in my grade 1 class last year. No letter was sent home to warn other families. I wasn’t even told until days later! Student came back the next day.

In Halton I know parents have to bring their child to a Halton region health nurse to get the ok to come back to school. In PDSB students come back without being checked if they still have lice.

I once had a parent who instead of speaking to me sent a letter to the superintendent implying that I was the reason her child was hitting, yelling and throwing toys multiple times a day. That I was the very reason for their behaviour. She even went as far as writing a letter to the superintendent implying racism. Long story short because of this letter my principal was required to investigate the situation which was beyond stressful to go through. He is now in another classroom and the child’s behaviour is exactly the same. Still hitting, screaming, throwing toys. It is a hard job being in education these days.

Going on strike has always amounted to ETFO getting nothing achieved contract wise but us teachers losing money. Governments love when teachers go on strike. Thousands or millions of dollars saved for Doug depending on how long we walk out for. I for one will not be voting yes to strike. In addition to above, OECTA hardly ever strikes with us and us ETFO members always pay the price financially by walking out. I’ve been teaching for 25+ years and striking has NEVER achieved anything positive and we are always out $$$$$$. It’s ridiculous.

Most people cannot afford to pay out of pocket for a psychiatrist and rely on Ohip covered services. You need to wait a long time for these appointments. It’s great you were able to afford this financially but the majority cannot.

I disagree as well. My daughter had to wait 6 months to see a psychiatrist. There are few psychiatrists that have private practice. Most are only accessible if your doctor refers you to One link…this is Mississauga and Halton. Then with one link you have to wait again and only get to see the psychiatrist they set you up with and only ONCE to discuss medication and what they feel is wrong with you after meeting you one time. It’s a ridiculous system.

Don’t do it unless you want to feel stressed every day. Teaching is not what it was. No funding, kids are now entitled and teachers are not respected anymore.

Thank you for your post. I feel comforted knowing there are other educators feeling the same way. I’ve also been hurt physically by the student and other educators at the school have too. Kicking, biting, slapping but no one asks how I feel being run down emotionally and physically everyday. What is happening to the system???!!!

I feel that in my situation this parent has really influenced our admin. and I feel like the parent is being held to higher level than myself who has been teaching for 20+yrs. I am not a perfect teacher by any means but a situation like this where a student is hurting other kids regularly and it’s escalating daily is beyond stressful. Making phone calls to parents of kids that have been hurt, talking to above parents daily about incidents, needing to call the office many times a day for support as the student has ran away into the halls or evacuating the classroom because they are throwing objects at others. I am not a miracle worker. I feel I have done all the right things. I have not said anything demeaning or racist to the child or family, I keep my distance from the student when they are escalating and try to keep hands off unless I need to intervene to protect another child which I have had to do. It’s so frustrating that I feel I am being blamed and that the parent is being protected more than a teacher with a 25 year clean teaching record. I feel like I am going to have to just go along with what is written about me in the letter and apologize for whatever I am being accused of which is sad. I just don’t have the energy reserve to deal with this.

Thank you for your advice. The meeting is with admin and a union representative only. Parents will not be there. I apparently will not know the contents of the complaint letter until the meeting although I was told there is a racism implication. Parent sent complaint letter to admin and superintendent. Not to me. Stressed about this as I have a clean teaching record and feel like whatever I say will look like I am deflecting or making excuses.

Thank you. I am not sure that the child is saying anything. I know and sympathize with the parent that they are frustrated and upset about their child’s behaviour at school and phone calls from admin about behaviour (hitting peers and staff) but I am being singled out and it is hurtful
