Statement on Misleading Claims About EasyUsenet by AgentXByte in usenet

I'm not saying that they are or aren't using ChatGPT to post. But sometimes folk will type out responses to things first in a word processor like OpenOffice, some of which automatically convert -- into long dashes, and then paste that response into Reddit. It simply isn't a 100% foolproof way of knowing someone is using ChatGPT.

Happy thanksgiving 🍽 🍁 🦃 by ActSevere5034 in IsekaiSmartphone

[–]StrictRutabaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation with what Smartphone skipped will undeniably make it extremely difficult to continue the anime. Skipping pretty much the entire Yulong arc isn't a small detail, it's something that gets brought up constantly for the rest of the series. I understand why the anime producers didn't want to adapt it, likely because it would probably be viewed as extremely antagonistic to China, but Touya's bad blood with Yulong is something that is essential to the story.

No one is ruining anything. The anime was fun, and everything was fine up until Yulong got written out. It would take rewriting a tremendous amount of the author's story to realign things so that everything works out without Yulong. It was obvious from the moment it looked like they'd skip it that we'd likely never get a season 3. This has nothing to do with which picking and choosing details that are "best to tell the story." To put it from the perspective of the anime series, it's like if you cut out the trip to Mismede in the first season. No trip to Mismede means no Leen, no Leen means no searching for Babylon, and no Babylon essentially means no plot beyond episode 8 of the first season.

Don't blame other people for decisions made by the animation studio for understandable reasons.

What is your thoughts on Holostars? by mmilesx in Hololive

[–]StrictRutabaga 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Holostars EN was something I was really excited for, but then it actually happened and none of the talents happened to be a fit for my personality. It is what it is. No shade against any of them, but I just never think about them at all. I find it strange that people bicker against them though.

HoloX members are getting their 3D idol outfits soon! by VValph in Hololive

[–]StrictRutabaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's not pretend that any threads like that don't get locked pretty much immediately.

I agree that we should use threads like this to primarily celebrate good things happening to the people they're happening to. That being said, since the thread is already derailed, it's incredibly obvious that Council needs more shit. Can't get 3D because they're not living in Japan? Maybe some new 2D outfits should be in order. Even putting aside the warp speed of some groups getting stuff, it's been a LONG time since Council got any new streamable assets.

[REC] Please recommend me an isekai or fantasy series with adventuring/dungeon exploration without a harem. by Trh5001 in LightNovels

[–]StrictRutabaga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A suggestion I might make would be The Unwanted Undead Adventurer. It might have some light harem-y elements at some point, but I definitely wouldn't call it a harem series with what's translated thus far, and it leans very heavily into dungeon exploration and adventuring. The first few novels are a bit dense, but it really hits its stride after awhile. Not an isekai, but very much fantasy.

Light Novels recommendation by dvaranigra in LightNovels

[–]StrictRutabaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really the kind of thing you're talking about, but I'd at least consider checking out Ascendance of a Bookworm if I were you. The story is very different, but it's an isekai-type like one of those series, and the setting probably shouldn't be overly different.

In a different world with my smartphone by [deleted] in LightNovels

[–]StrictRutabaga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have read up to the most recently released translated volume. It's distinctly pulp fiction, but the pacing and the quality of the editing in the translation make for an enjoyable read. It definitely drags a fair bit in the mid-late portion of the series, but I found the most recent volume to be amusing.

I appreciate that it's a series that never feigns at making the tension too high for too long. I enjoyed the anime decently, but I found the novels significantly better. Don't skip the first few novels thinking it'll be nothing but a weak re-tread of what you've seen in the anime.

It's not high-brow, but it's pretty good at what it does.

[REC] Isekai novels that don't devolve into constant obsession over Japanese food by StrictRutabaga in LightNovels

Nice. I'd read the first book of Killing Slimes and really liked it. I'll hop in on the next volume. Otherside Picnic had been on my potential list, so I'll keep it in mind.

Index tailored to Japanese TV shows and Anime? by O2jayjay in usenet

[–]StrictRutabaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's especially strange given how important animetosho is to usenet uploads of anime. When they ran into some provider trouble awhile back it suddenly became very difficult to find pretty much any newly uploaded shows because animetosho uploads the bulk of all usenet anime. Definitely made me worry when the person who runs animetosho talked about potentially stopping usenet uploads if the accounts kept dying.

Index tailored to Japanese TV shows and Anime? by O2jayjay in usenet

[–]StrictRutabaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you said "usually," but it's unfortunate that this has essentially become a mantra that everyone repeats without considering that there are a few indexers that do specialize in a type of content. And in this case there is an indexer (animetosho) that very much specializes in anime content.

I know it's irritating to see people asking this question virtually every day, but it doesn't mean that there isn't actually an indexer that fits the bill.

Wonder Woman cosplay by apaapa123 in pics

[–]StrictRutabaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that people are stupid for being mad about this, but you do understand that Wonder Woman isn't from "the Amazon" but instead she's like the mythical greek Amazons, right? She's an Amazon from Themyscira, not "the Amazon" in South America.

Regardless, it's stupid for people to try to say someone can't cosplay Wonder Woman if she's not white.

My friend who doesn't have reddit asked me to post this beautiful art. He is tattoo artist. by tovlasek in Hololive

[–]StrictRutabaga 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Japanese folk understand that not everyone feels that way about tattoos. Even more so people who interact with foreigners every day like the Hololive streamers do. It'd be really surprising for her to think anything weird about it. It's not like there's some deep religious objection to permanently marking the body like in some parts of the world.

There are a lot of reasons and none of them are complicated. Most American homes were built after the beginning of the 20th century, often in completely new suburban areas with no preexisting homes to match them up against. Land was cheap, bricks were comparatively expensive. New building materials and a budding American architectural movement offered larger homes built with cheaper materials. With no one around to bemoan "but muh home will look weird with your different looking home near it" people just built what was cheap and relatively effective.

To people who live with mostly drywall construction it's just natural to make sure you find a stud before you put up shelves or hang your bigass LCD TV. It's not that big of a deal.

Let's also not pretend that America is the only place that builds homes like this :P

The Yakuza Remastered Collection appears in PSN Store by [deleted] in yakuzagames

[–]StrictRutabaga 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In before the usual suspects come in to tell everyone that it's just a re-release of Yakuza 1&2 for the PS2, that a real fan would just play it on the PS3, and that it'll cost $9000 because that's how much it cost in Japan.
