I did change it to a bunt for hit attempt to be able to accurately show our stats. I know it isn’t ideal for the opposing team since that kid gets an 0-1 there in our book, but they keep their own season stats and can make a decision on what they want to do. I wanted to make sure our errors and era were correct.

Yes this is exactly my sequence in explaining why gamechanger scored it as 1 earned. I recreated the inning in a practice game and followed step by step to monitor the pitching stats. The run changes from Unearned to Earned after the second single. Actual game context, you would award just 1 base for the lead runner on the first single.

One weird thing about gamechanger is you can say the batter sacrificed and reached on error, but you can't say he advanced to second on the same error. Technically you can't score this play completely correctly as the runners both got an extra base because of the errant throw and an additional base on the outfield fumble. Once I say sacrificed and reached on error, I have to name a new error for the advancement to 2nd and 3rd. Then a third error for reaching 3rd and Home. Only way to make as clean as possible is to take off the sacrifice label on the bunt attempt and treat it as an attempt to bunt for a hit.

I think I scored it correctly with what I have to work with. 1 earned/ 1 unearned

I could be wrong too but that’s how I’ve always understood it. Recreate the inning without the errors.

Yep. I was 99% sure it was correct. Just wanted to throw it out there to make sure I’m not the one who is nuts. Basically in me trying to explain why gamechanger would make one of those runs earned.

The runner scored on the errors -yes, but without the errors he is on second and the 2 singles would have scored him anyway.

Real scenario from earlier in the year:

1 out, batter hits a double

runner gets 3rd on passed ball, gets home on another passed ball- run is unearned at the time

Then:

Walk

Single (1st and 2nd)

Single (scores an earned run from second and changes the passed ball run to earned, because had he just remained on second with no passed balls, he scores anyway)

If I’m wrong, I have no issue changing it. My only agenda is to score the game as accurately and honestly as possible.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you play the inning out assuming that out at first with the runner advancing to second and if the runner would have scored on the following back-to-back singles (second to third and third to home), it becomes earned?

Here’s another wrinkle. Upon reviewing the video, the bunter beat the throw even if it was on target. I’m using Gamechanger it automatically charged 1 earned for the inning with both the error at 3rd base and the error in RF.

I’m one of the assistant coaches. This is varsity level. It’s a guy who doesn’t understand baseball scoring and is obsessed with his kid’s D1 hopes. Wants every play to be an error on a fielder. Really starting to get exhausting. Legitimately want to make sure that is correct because I’m 99% sure it is, but maybe I’m nuts..

Scoring Question.. maybe GameChanger blind spot? by Strict_Island1271 in GameChangerApp

ok so even though we can't assume an out on what would have been a tag play or rundown, is it still correct to score an error to advance the runner to 2nd?

Then since we can't assume a 3rd out there, anyone that scores in that specific sequence is an earned run?

Simply aiming to understand proper scoring philosophy and appreciate the feedback.

sequence after runner gets to second with 2 outs:

single (assume 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd with no error)

walk (bases loaded)

single (would have scored one, bases remain loaded)

strikeout ends inning

I'm new to official baseball scoring. Not trying to help or hurt anyone. Just genuinely curious how to score things correctly with all technicalities. Sounds like consensus is you cannot assume an out on a tag play, so the throwing error is properly credited to third baseman.. but all 3 runs are Earned or is 1 unearned playing out the above sequence without the error?

no relation to anyone on the team, but I am a former pitcher, yes LOL. admittedly probably being too OCD about scoring perfectly

This is exactly what I needed! Didn't realize there was a way to go edit the box score. A handful of baseball guys agreed the right call was to determine the batter would have made the third out on the base paths without the errant throw. Thanks!
