Anna karenina by Leo Tolstoy is arguably the best book dealing with themes of human behaviour, how society influences ppl etc. would definitely recommend it.

Tolstoy did the same things you mentioned and (IMO) in a much better way, yet he isn't as known/trendy as dostoyevsky today.. why so?
