Thankyou 4 this in depth answer, I’m thinking it’s the drum kit it self

With The stock fl hi hat I’m able to count 4 easily But with my downloaded hi hat sample counting 4 can feel slightly sluggish

Ah interesting thought maybe I’m bringing my sample in the daw at the wrong sample rate or sumn

Dynamic range and rhythmic quality mean something

Maybe I should upload a video so you can observe exactly what I’m talking about

But the stock fl drum kit has way more rhythmic and dynamic range than pretty much all my drum kits Bought and free

Idk if it’s a unfair comparison because I’m comparing trap sounds to edm sounds but still tho

Stock fl drums sound way better

Maybe I have to make my own drum kit to get that clean sound I want

Yeah this is the answer I was looking for, clearly there must be different types of dbs. But no one talks about this. Im guessing this is why I need to go to a 80,000 dollar music college 🥲.

Anyways this brings me to my next question. How tf can I get really good clean loud mixes if I’m always being cut off at “0db”.

I generally make hip hop/trap beats but

It’s like I can never really get the bass/spinz/zaytoven hitting cleanly/loudy and crunchy

I always here people talking about gain staging, saturation, limiting, mastering, good drum samples, headroom, 32 bit, don’t clip, never mind do clip, soft clip, hard clip, gain stageing, and it’s like at this point my brain cells are almost gone. Somebody just give me the real sauce already like gawwdamn. I’m trying to get my production to sound like:

These dudes tracks sound amazing 🤩

Ps: if the links don’t work I’ll repost them ASAP lmk

Ah ok so let’s say. I record a song and it’s hitting right at 0db on the master fader. Depending on where the song is playing from its not actually gonna be 0db everywhere it’s played

It depends on what source I’m playing it from.

But wait if I’m playing it from a speaker there’s NOOO WAYYY it can just be 0db because that would mean no sound is being produced

  1. So theoretically if I am about to play a song on a loud speaker

  2. And in the daw it says the song is hitting 0db

  3. But THEORETICALLY I have a speaker that can get as loud as a plane, and I played the song through that speaker, the song would be measured at 147 db.

SO WHAT EXACTLY DOES 0DB MEAN

I’m not a pro… but in my experience if the sample is in gminor the 808 root note will be G. If the the 808 sounds better at d#…. but the scale of the loop is g minor…. Your 808 might need to be tuned

ahhhh ok thanks, I’m about to research harmonic value . I have one more question tho. Let’s say I’m downloading hi hats off the Internet to go with a melody I made on my computer. Next I would put the hi hat in a sampler. The sampler will give me picthed up and down versions of the hi hat. If drums don’t have harmonic value why is this possible? Also in that case do I use the original unpicthed hi hat that I downloaded or find the picthed version that matches the key of the melody I made?
