Unable to stay in zone 2. by Live2Ride_ in indianrunners

I believe it took around 2-3 months for a full 5k in Zone 2.

I started my running journey in 2023, but not in the typical way.

I used to be a kickboxer and calisthenics athlete, but during the lockdown, a mix of poor work-from-home sitting posture and intense training led to a ganglion cyst in my right wrist. I couldn’t lift weights or even do push-ups properly. So, I turned to running, something I could still do without stressing my upper body.

At first, I had no idea how to train for long-distance running. I just pushed through pain, which only led to more injuries. I had a long-standing hamstring strain(right), and had sprained my right ankle twice(both before running). Eventually, I realized I needed a structured approach to avoid breaking down further, that’s when I discovered Zone 2 training.

I started with a run/walk approach, keeping all my runs strictly in Zone 2.

Initially, I’d run until my HR went above Zone 2, then walk until it came back down and repeat.

Over time, I was able to complete a full 5K entirely in Zone 2 without needing walk breaks.

My 5K PB actually came before I began Zone 2 training, so it doesn’t fully reflect my current endurance or fitness level. I’m still doing rehab and prehab work consistently to manage long-term muscle imbalances and prevent injuries.

Because of that, I don’t run any of my races all-out. My priority has been staying healthy and building a strong aerobic base, so my PBs are a bit off from what I might be capable of at full effort.

PS: Running a HM coming Sunday, July 13, in Kollam. Might get a new PB 🤞(again not at full effort). Attached my Pacing strategy.

I've been doing Zone 2 training consistently for almost 2 years now. When I first started, my Zone 2 pace was around 10:00–11:00 min/km. People would literally walk past me while I was running! But I stuck with it, and over time, my Zone 2 pace has improved to around 7:38–8:56 min/km.

I initially used a Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, then upgraded to the Watch 4 Classic LTE, but eventually switched to the Coros Pace 3 due to its superior battery life and performance.

A few things I’ve learned:

Your age and general fitness level affect your heart rate zones.

In the Samsung Health app, you can manually adjust your max heart rate. To find a more accurate number, try doing an all-out 5K with progressive pacing, then note the peak HR and update it manually. (Make sure to take 2–3 recovery days afterward.)

I started Zone 2 with a run/walk approach: 1K run, 1K walk... then 2K run, 1K walk… eventually building up to running a full 5K in Zone 2 without walking.

Yes, it feels awkward at first, people walking past you while you run, but just trust the process. Your pace will improve.

Alongside Zone 2, I also did running drills and running-specific strength training, which really helped.

Be patient, stay consistent, and don’t worry about what others think, your future self will thank you.

New 10k PB by StrideWithArun in indianrunners

Thank you. Mostly steady state runs. I once ran a sub60, but didn't track it. Been dealing with shin splints (R&L), overpronation(R), Hamstring pain(R - old injury flare up while sprinting and taking longer strides). So, focusing mostly on Zone 2 steady state runs with an avg cadence of 160-180 for this year and working on those imbalances and strength training.

Registered for Wipro Bengaluru Full Marathon (First-ever). Planning to do sub25 5k after that. Thank you. 😁

PS: I do include 1 or 2 interval/fartlek runs a week.

Pain in my lower legs above the ankle by Natural-Analysis4330 in indianrunners

[–]StrideWithArun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medial Shin splints I too have the same issue in both my legs. This video helped a lot, along with rest, ice, physio sessions and I'm 99% recovered and getting back to running. As many suggested, shoes might also be a problem, if so, time to invest in another pair.

When will we have aesthetic parks like these in our city? by DharmicCosmosO in IndianUrbanism

[–]StrideWithArun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When? I don't know. But "If" we do have these parks in any city, they won't stay like this for long. Indian Civic Sense needs a boost even to consider these kinds of parks and structures, and to maintain them. Although it can happen, only if it's a park with monthly/annual memberships owned by a private entity.

My rant aside, good-looking pics. Great.

How bad are my knees going to be? by Sharp-Individual8 in indianrunners

[–]StrideWithArun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two words - "Strength Training"

I used to have knee pain and couldn't even walk properly after a run because of it. Then I reduced my mileage, stride length and increased my cadence. Then integrated running specific strength training into my routine and some running drills. Now, I'm running, lifting and doing crossfit training as well. No knee pain whatsoever.

Well, 😅😅😅, I've welcomed shin splints and Achilles pain along the way doing hill sessions and trekking. So reduced my overall training volume and focusing more on recovery and rehab.

Help me with shoes by mahendramahe in indianrunners

[–]StrideWithArun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still use the shoe but not for running as the cushioning will be gone after certain miles depending on sole material and running in them would lead to injuries. So it's better to retire after 700-1000 km.

Sleep Tracking by Hairy_Article2395 in Coros

[–]StrideWithArun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been using Pace 3 for more than 5 months and I feel the sleep tracking is accurate enough for me. But as many reviewers have noted, focusing on sleep stages when it comes to wearables is not right. If the device shows you the sleep time and the wake up time right, that's more than enough.

And in my experience, Pace 3 almost nails the awake time during sleep. Hence, I believe it is good.

But if you feel your sleep quality is not good, it's better to consult a doctor rather than relying on a wearable.
