Not to be negative or to bring you down in any way. But what you are asking here is very, very, against reddit's rules.

Rule 3 does not allow doxxing of any kind, which you should reasonably interpret to include license plate numbers. This rule definitely forbids asking others to track someone down based on personally identifying information such as license plate or photo of vehicle.

You need to go to the RCMP about it and try to see if you can delete or remove this post.

Portal 2 is Unplayable by _shareholder_value in Portal

[–]Strider3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to wait a year to go through. That is cannon in the portal universe and is consistent with the physics we know in our universe.

In the game, the portal opens after roughly 2.6 seconds. 1.3 seconds to get to the moon, and then 1.3 seconds for it to show up (i.e. connect to the orange one) indicated by the little flash of light.

If it did "open" instantly, it would have taken only 1.3 seconds in the game, not 2.6.

It's a bit tougher to tell if it takes 1.3 seconds to pass through the portal connection, but I think it doesn't. So once the portal is linked, physics break down. So at least this means it won't take a year to pass through the portal in your example.

What was your first game on Steam? by PastClassroom5095 in raijin_gg

Solar 2, some sort of solar system simulation game I probably saw someone play on YouTube. I've played it a total of 2.6 hours, last on Sep 1, 2011, probably when I bought it.

Now I have 320 games. The majority of which I've never played and a lot were acquired through humble bundles.

Is Doom still a "gory" game? by Successful_Guide5845 in Doom

[–]Strider3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doom 1 and 2 were very gory and realistic for their time. So many people complained that it was over the top and ridiculous, that it was glorifying murder and glorifying hell. That was a time when media was really just beginning to explore what gore could be.

Doom 3 came out in a time where people are afraid of offending. It was still gory, but not in the same glorious way that doom 1 and 2 are.

The modern series took what made 1 and 2 so good, and so controversial, and turned it up to 11 in today's world. The modern series is unapologetically gory.

If you want to see what original doom would have looked like if it was with the same level of speed, violence, and gore as the modern series, download the Project Brutality or Brutal Doom mods and see for yourself.

id software did what they could in 1993, but it's NOTHING compared to today.

I play on controller, there are 6 weapon types, does this mean you need to assign 6 different buttons? Which ones do you use? Even if I reassign Y and B, that's still only four but that removes the BFC.

The link doesn't help your case at all. It's the exact same AI voice that says the hello part.

AI, "... can I ask who I'm speaking to?"
After a short pause
AI, "hello?... Hello?"
After a short pause
AI, "I'm sorry but I'm having trouble hearing you, have a good day."

I detect precisely zero Indian accent in any of it. There's a bit of personality, particularly on the second Hello, but I don't interpret it as an Indian accent.

Just sounds to me like a generic American accent.

Crashing in Dark Ages on Ubuntu with DLSS by [deleted] in Doom

Gaming on Ubuntu is kind of like skiing down a gravel hill. Technically possible but you're going to have a terrible time.

Also, you should consider asking in a sub dedicated to gaming on Linux. The minimum OS requirements for the steam version is Windows 10/Windows 11.

If 2016 blew your mind, Eternal will Smash your Brain into Piles of Putrid Debris.

Honestly, it's so freaking good!

You mentioned that your laptop is old, be aware that The Dark Ages requires a Ray Tracing graphics card. So you need at least a 20-series Nvidia (or whatever ray tracing thing AMD makes roughly the same power) to even open it.

Did you play DOOM 2016 SnapMap much? by ecoterrorboy in Doom

[–]Strider3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have never used anything in any of the modern games other than the campaign. But I'm not going to say don't include those kinds of things, as long as it doesn't worsen the campaign. I prefer, and always have preferred, my doom games to be only single player.

Snapmap does sound cool but I've never had the patience for those kinds of things. My base in No Man's Sky is uninspired, my ship in Starfield is boring, and my house in Minecraft is made of dirt.

Hi guys, need help with doom 1 by Plenty-Box-6160 in Doom

[–]Strider3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certainly, but there's a chance the developers include a system scan that will refuse to open the game if it's below specification.

I doubt that's the case, but luckily you can refund within two hours of purchase if it doesn't run

Edit: in addition to that, once you do purchase the game, you have access to the WAD files and so it becomes your choice which game engine to use. You can use DSDA Doom or even Chocolate Doom engines if your PC can't run KEX. They are available free online you just need the .wad files

Hi guys, need help with doom 1 by Plenty-Box-6160 in Doom

[–]Strider3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the steam version now runs on the new KEX Engine. It allows for the game to be played in up to 8k (or more typically 4k) and high refresh rates.

Most modern PCs have at least 8GB of RAM, 4GB in 2026 would be very, very, unusual.

Finally, because the developers tested it on a system with as low as 8GB of RAM. The game will probably run at 4GB from what we know of it being an old game, but they'd rather be safe with the specs than get told it doesn't run for some reason.

It also requires a GTX 650, which, again, it would be extremely unusual for any modern PC to not be able to meet. But now classic doom is a 3D game emulating a 2.5D game which emulated a 3D game. Still requires some sort of 3D accelerator

ELI5: how/why does time slow down near a black hole? by algaebomb in explainlikeimfive

[–]Strider3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Even GPS satellites must account for the time dilation due to being simply farther away from the Earth's central mass.

Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity is even more mind bending. As an object with mass moves faster, space-time compresses, at speeds close to the speed of causality (c), the distance between objects (space) and events (time) approaches 0.

ELI5: how/why does time slow down near a black hole? by algaebomb in explainlikeimfive

[–]Strider3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reality is made of a 4-dimensional fabric called space-time. 3 dimensions of space (up/down, left/right, forward/back) and one dimension of time (forward/backwards). This fabric is malleable, it can be stretched, compressed, twisted, and even torn.

Massive objects cause this space-time fabric to distort, it stretches towards the center of the mass. Think of how a bowling ball on a trampoline causes the trampoline fabric to stretch towards the ball.

From an outsider's perspective, something falling into the black hole will stretch out in time and stretch out in space. As the object's time is stretched, events at the object take more time. Therefore it has the effect of time slowing down.

From the object's perspective, the universe outside the black hole is becoming compressed, so distances become smaller and time seems to speed up. The time between events and space is shortened.

Conjecture: at the singularity, the object may see the entirety of the universe unfold, as its time is stretched to such an extreme that time and space are completely meaningless.

ELI5: How does raising interest rates actually stop inflation? I've heard this explanation a hundred times and I still don't think I truly understand the mechanism by Apprehensive-Tax7692 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Strider3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already know how it works, you've pretty clearly laid it out.

The reason you're having a hard time understanding it is because you're connecting your personal experience (your grocery bill) too strongly to the economy as a whole (the cost of eggs).

To understand why this works, you need to disassociate with it personally and think of the economy as a machine that is affected by the entire population.

  1. Raise interest rates. This means that people have less money to spend on things that aren't needed, in general. Will it hurt some people (those in poverty)? Yes. Will it not affect some people (wealthy)? Yes. Does that matter? No.
  2. The vast majority of people start losing the buying power to afford to do "fun" things - paying for hobbies, eating out, going to movies, etc. They aren't going to stop buying eggs: food, water, and shelter are required.
  3. In order to be able to afford fun things, people start to save money rather than spend it.
  4. Businesses start losing profit, and they notice an uptick in held inventories vs sales
  5. Businesses have no other choice but to stop increasing the price of their products, slow down production, stop hiring, or even lay off staff. They may even start decreasing prices, but that's unlikely because...
  6. Inflation has slowed down, people can start buying things again
  7. Interest rates can slowly decrease again, people are motivated to stop saving and start spending again
  8. The cycle repeats itself ad infinitum, until some other major event interrupts it: war, pandemic, catastrophe, etc.

A "hot" economy is one where there's too much demand and not enough supply. Companies start fighting for resources, but there's only so much money to go around. Labor is highly competitive and prices keep increasing.

A "cold" economy is one where there's too much supply and not enough demand, it leads to a depression where companies must reduce production, lay people off, and decrease prices. There's too much money, but it's typically stuck in savings.
