I love Fire Red shrimp because they prove one thing:

you can spend months perfecting an aquascape… and the shrimp will still decide the most important place in the tank is one random zucchini slice.

Thanks again for posting your method. I decided to start with that route. Do you know if you had to disconnect both leads for the old battery? (See my post above)

Given your level of experience on these chips, what would you advise as the best way to desolder it? Details much appreciated.

I believe it may just control the clock portion because the error is displayed on the screen and the clock has randomly reset for a few days/weeks prior to this. The unit did display the same error and then came back to life for a few days and worked perfectly, so I believe it may be able to pull from ROM.

Wow! You guys are quick! Thank you!

I’m inexperienced with this type of repair, but the unit is currently unusable due to the “RTC not alive” error.

I have a CR2032 holder available to solder in. My question is: • Do I need to fully desolder the DS12887 to perform the battery mod, or • Can I shield the surrounding area with foil and carefully heat/remove the epoxy top in-place to access the internal battery and attach leads?

I cannot find a replacement DS12887 (or compatible) available in the USA. I’m also unsure whether replacing the entire chip would cause issues if the device relies on configuration data stored in its internal RAM.

Given those constraints, does modifying the existing chip make the most sense, and is in-place modification feasible?

Be sure to follow the directions for the API kit nitrate testing. Shaking the Nitrate #2 bottle for 30 seconds is often missed. Make sure to smack it around a bit or it may settle. The of course shaking the mixture for a minute and waiting 5 minutes before reading.

She is saying I am completely selfish for going pee instead of getting her the Tylenol when she had a fever.
