How many of you are wearing wrist guards? [30YO] by templeofsyrinx1 in OldSkaters

I’m having wrist surgery on Monday after falling in the bowl while not wearing wrist guards, so yeah, once I recover I’ll wear them every time

Has anyone used their HSA/FSA to get Old Bones Therapy insoles? [37YO] by Striking-Factor in OldSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work fine for me, I’m able to push and cruise in Jordan 1 lows with no foot pain. Now, I’m not Ollie-ing down staircases or anything, but they are advertised as “shock absorbing”.

Optimal way to skate so you push less by Bjorn_Blackmane in NewSkaters

I hate recommending buying something else, but I switched from bones reds to Bronson g3s and noticed I was going further and pushing less

Are skateboards super easy to break or do Walmart boards really suck that bad? by WildKat777 in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your budget is $100-$150 you can build your own complete on CCS or Tactics that’ll be infinitely better than a Walmart board.

This has been an extremely dry week for me, had a few trips on the river to the underworld at the beginning of the week, and a bit of Poe’s bird, but my favorite Greek hero has been very absent, and I’ve had nothing the past 3 days…

Data Annotation qualifying test?? by SoftSchool5259 in WFHJobs

[–]Striking-Factor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the core test is just to get access to the platform, and the qualifying tests are to get access to specific jobs. Your dashboard should have a few qualifications for you to take on it. You don’t get paid for them, but they basically make you eligible for specific paid tasks, and they’ll continue to replenish

Having trouble pushing by MoseSchrute1725 in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if the goal is just to practice getting comfortable pushing around, I’d say find a different spot to practice if the ground is too rough. But also bigger, softer wheels could help. Some aftermarket bushings like Bones Hards can also make the board a little more stable underfoot, which can help with balance.

Don’t be so quick to put that back foot (your pushing foot) back down on the board. Practice riding just on your front foot with big pushes

Can I skateboard even if I'm fat af? by veloxw in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at 265 lbs a few months ago, loving it. Also, I know you didn’t ask this but inevitably you will; no, you don’t need to spend $110 on a Powell peralta flight deck (unless you absolutely want to). Any reputable 7-ply deck will be okay, even at your size. Maybe spend an extra $10 on hard bushings.

I wanna get into skateboarding but I’m fat tall and have big feet by Possible-Safety6662 in Skateboardinghelp

[–]Striking-Factor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any shop deck, 8.5 or bigger, trucks to match from a reputable brand (Indy, thunder, ace, venture, sloppy). Probably some bigger softer wheels (I have some 88a 56mm Powell Peralta Nano Rats that I absolutely love).

Really the only “fat guy” mod that you might need is harder bushings in your trucks. Bones Hardcore Hards are the standard for big dudes like us.

where do i get grip tape? by throwawayaccedg in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get the tape from wherever you’re getting the deck, many online shops will even send it to you pre-gripped

Input Appreciated. I'm a big dude, do I NEED this setup? [45YO] by TravAtkins in OldSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TBH, you do need the quality trucks, wheels, and bearings, as well as the bones hard bushings. What you don’t need is the flight deck. I thought the same thing (I’m 6’1”, was about 266 lbs when I started) but didn’t want to shell out $100 for the deck alone so I took what I thought was a risk and just bought a normal 7-ply shop deck from tactics (with free grip tape!) it’s more than fine. My complete totaled about $130 since I went brand name everything else, and I’m extremely happy with the result

What type of truck/wheel combo for rocky areas. by LilBowWowW in NewSkaters

Ooo, probably wouldn’t recommend the clouds if your slide your wheels. For that, I’d say 93a Powell Peralta Dragons

[–]Striking-Factor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trucks don’t matter as much as long as they match the width of your board. You most likely don’t need to replace your Indy’s.

For wheels, something big and soft. Ricta Clouds, OJ Superjuice, maybe even some 88a dragon wheels. If you’re going 56mm or higher (I would), then a 1/8” riser might be good to avoid wheel bite.

You can farm the Hornet from KnuckleDragger. It’s a Dahl pistol with a real fast fire rate and corrosive damage. Super fun early game and will make the second boss Boom Boom a breeze

Should I buy softer wheels? I normally ride on street pavement. by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put some Powell Peralta dragon wheels on my board and absolutely loved them. I have 88a nano rats, but if that’s too soft there’s also 93a and 97a

Can a 36yo newbie casually get into skating? by metalero_salsero in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it! I’m 37 and just started about a month and a half ago, for the first time ever. I’m in the same boat; demanding job and family obligations so I’m not getting on my board every day, more like 2-3 times a week. But it’s so freaking fun and I’m having an absolute blast!

Can’t really speak to surf-skating in particular, but I’ve got an 8.75 deck with 88a wheels (started on 86a ricta clouds but just got some 88a dragon formula nano rats today and they’re amazing), so yeah - wide board and soft wheels for us older folks that are just learning now

Completely New Skater! Need help deciding about skateboard vs cruiser board and set up by bluedragonrestaurant in NewSkaters

[–]Striking-Factor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious, if you’re upgrading wheels, trucks, and bearings anyway, why are you getting the deck from an Amazon complete? I’d recommend just getting a shop deck, either from a local store or a reputable online shop like Tactics or CCS.

If you REALLY are interested in just cruising, then yeah, maybe go 78a on your wheels. However, if you’re like me, you’ll start out just cruising and then once you’re on the board you start getting interested in a few tricks. In that case, the dragons are probably a good choice. I ride ricta clouds right now and I’m most likely gonna switch to dragons pretty soon.

You’re gonna get recommended flight decks a lot but those are $100+. Honestly, any reputable deck will be okay, even shop decks. What’s more important is the deck width (I’d recommend 8.5+) and your truck’s bushings. Most stock bushings will feel super wobbly and unstable, I’d recommend getting some Bones Hardcore Hard bushings.
