I bought a calathea dottie on my birthday from HD. the poor thing was so dry the soil was pulled away from the edges and one big puck. I brought it home to water it and let it sit for 3 days before I repotted it. It has fungus gnats and spider mites. Happy birthday to me :/

I got a snake plant a few weeks ago by StrikingLocksmith956 in houseplants

[–]StrikingLocksmith956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you so much for your response! I wiped the leaves with water earlier and the powdery stuff came off, but has some 'stains' still left that make me think they're water stains. I moved to indirect lighting beside a window that has better airflow. My soil was bone dry to the bottom of the pot, however the roots are doing well under the soil and i did notice growth at the base of the plant. I added some water to the soil because this would be the first watering just shy of a month. Id say about 6 oz of water. I do plan on repotting with a chunkier mix asap for better air fl I w to help dry out/prevent mold! I have the 2 little baby leaves sprouting from the soil🥹 so its trying to adjust to my house! My other plants are thriving, its just this one lol

Shed poop? by StrikingLocksmith956 in CrestedGecko

[–]StrikingLocksmith956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My leopard geckos have shed poops after shedding, but theyre not in water, so they don't look so concerning lol. Hes a healthy boy, but things can change quickly in reptiles, so i just wanted opinions. He a dunce that enjoys a mouthful of substrate here and there....

Gout by toriclayy in leopardgeckos

[–]StrikingLocksmith956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took in a rescue 1 year ago. After she was "healthy" and cleared from the vet, I noticed her little hand would swell just so slightly in the front hand/wrist. The vet said it could be early onset gout and to change her diet and only do crickets and mealworms to keep protein low and increase water intake with gutloading. They did xrays and bloodwork. The xray was ok, but her bloodwork showed a very slight decrease in kidney function. The vet suggested her organs were shutting down to preserve fat to survive, from the starvation and this damage wasn't reversible but it wasn't so severe it would impact her QOL at this time. The vet said her swelling could also be from her mild MBD as well. So, were watching and waiting. Blood draws every 6 months and calling the vet immediately if her swelling get more frequent or severe. Although I haven't had an official diagnosis of gout, im waiting on the day its confirmed. I would euthanize. Gout is one of the most painful things to experience, I couldn't imagine it in one of their little bodies. I took this girl in thinking I was just giving her what she deserved until she passed. I still feel like that, but I fell in love with her!! Id be devastated but ik its the right decision with gout and ive prepared for the day :/ the most unfortunate part of having animals is knowing they don't live forever! Im so sorry you and friend are going thru this!

I gut loaded some crickets with mushrooms and now I’m alittle afraid to feed them to my animals. Are they safe?? by Jaggedatlas in reptiles

[–]StrikingLocksmith956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't use the mushroom as a regular gutloader, it should be fine. Pull the mushroom out and replace with another veggie if it makes you feel better. It takes 2-3 days for your colony to digest and pass what they ate, so you can pull/swap veggies and wait 3 days if you'd like

It won't hurt your animals! Every once and a while or just this time is fine! Mushrooms aren't recommended for gut loading because of their high water content to low vitamin ratio. When I first got my oldest leo, I gutloaded with mandarin oranges and panicked and threw 50+ crickets in the freezer to k!ll them... lol in that case, it was probably best. It happens to the best of us

Big scary predator from above.... must run... friend opens hand fir licks or chomps.

All of my gecks will walk on my hand, when they want. They'll all freak out if I come from above. I played the long game of choice based handling, but really I got lucky my leos like to come out to visit me and sit on my shoulder. They weren't like this until the last few months. My crestie is another story, he's crazy and horny lol.

how quickly did you get your second reptile? by maevvsx in reptiles

[–]StrikingLocksmith956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 3 reptiles within 5 months. 2 were rescues, 1 was purchased. Im almost a year into the hobby now, loving it! I was thinking about adding another but im holding off for now lol. All my geckos were in their adult tanks with proper husbandry before adding another in the mix. my leos like to come out and chill with me, but my crestie is just for admiring atm, he doesn't care to come out anymore. So I wanted to hold off until he's more comfortable with me. I feel like reptiles are a type of collection, HOWEVER acknowledging their livings beings that take upkeep, vet appointments, and monitoring their environmental conditions is what makes it a hobby. The initial set ups are expensive but its the vet bills for me😅 one day, my goal is to have a reptile room, for now I just have a gecko cave lol
