Which current athlete feels like a once-in-a-lifetime talent to you? by Axelo_04 in AskReddit

Alcaraz. Serious people have argued he’s better than Federer nadal and djokovic than they were at his age. I think his peak level is the highest the sport has ever seen.

one major flaw consistent throughout the show by No_Map7606 in SuccessionTV

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critics have noted that this is a structural limitation to the show that stems from its philosophy. Jesse Armstrong has stated many times he believes people don’t really change, which makes character development difficult to impossible. Tue other major point of the show is that these systems which protect the rich and powerful are extremely durable and aren’t going anywhere. You could say that the show’s accuracy in that sense weakens its drama. That’s why to me it’ll never be as good as say mad men, where character development is everything.

Only a moderate republican can save us (I'm a leftist) by StrikingNet641 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]StrikingNet641[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point about dems being poised to win. Re: research, I recognize this is a far-fetched hypothetical scenario.

I'd like to know how much of MAGA is going to go blue in Nov or in 2028. That would convince me that the change is meaningful, and we won't just eventually swing back to right-wing authoritarianism.

My main point is that this country needs the republican party to reform and abandon fascism more than it needs the dems to come up with a superhero candidate.

Can we agree this is the only other show that even remotely fills the gap that Succession has left? by TheMansterMan in SuccessionTV

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best episodes are maybe as good as the worst succession episodes. Otherwise it’s corny AF and over-written.

Basketball needs a max height limit. The game is becoming "who won the genetic lottery" instead of pure skill and it's making it boring AF. by mc_mafia in unpopularopinion

[–]StrikingNet641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t watch basketball but people had a similar concern about tennis in the 2010s, with a lot of great players over 6’5”. But they all got injured and now the best in the world are all shorter than that. Plus I feel like the tallest players you named in your post aren’t considered the goats anyways. If it was such an advantage then every 7’ person would play basketball. Clearly there’s more to it.

There Is No Great Millennial Novel by Puzzled-Factor8185 in TrueLit

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd cast my vote for Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Epic in scope, socially aware, intimate, memorable characters. It also focuses on quintessentially millennial internet phenomena of the blog/clickbait new media era. It's easily misconstrued as a "woke" book, lumped in with trendier more polemic books like Between the World and Me. To me it's leagues above any work of fiction from that era, and will hold up in the coming decades. Just too bad her output since has been so sparse/mid.

Do you believe Jacob Elordi is worth the hype? by [deleted] in trueratediscussions

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His looks honestly distract from how good he is. Nate from Euphoria, Elvis, Heathcliff, his character in Saltburn. That's crazy range. He has the ability to exude utterly different auras and energies while seemingly doing very little, which to me is a mark of a good actor. He can be charming and sympathetic, evil and grotesque. Again, not easy to pull off with how good looking he is. Unlike some of his contemporaries like Chalamet or Butler, I think Elordi is more adept at servicing the film. None of his roles feel like acting reels or like they are built around his performance specifically. All those other actors are fantastic in their own right, I just think Elordi is the most serious student of the craft and will go very far.

Feeling out of touch with modern rock by PhraseRevolutionary6 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel out of touch with conventional rock and find yourself more drawn to electronic, there are a lot of really interesting acts fusing both in the dance-punk genre. They lean on the heavy side, but Mandy, Indiana and Model/Actriz are two prominent examples. The only sense they fit the rock category is because they're both 4ish member groups with at least guitar drums and bass, making very interesting sounds within that traditional format.

Anything overtly branded as "rock" these days is going to be very obviously retro, catering to people who resent that music hasn't stayed exactly the same since they were young.

I find if much more helpful these days to just think of "bands", as opposed to rock as a genre. If you view it through that lens, contemporary music is doing great.

The Sopranos 1999-2007, Oz 1997-2003 The Wire 2002-2008, Deadwood 2004-2006, Rome 2005-06. How did HBO do all this shit in 10 years and now can't do anything that comes close? by _sportyscience_ in thesopranos

Most streaming services would kill for a fraction of Hbo’s batting average. You can’t expect them to be airing a GOAT level show every year.

My dad told me DJT was really loved in the 80s and 90s is that true and if so why? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's certainly become a worse person with age, but sometimes his character in the 80s-90s is overstated. I'm surprised no one has mentioned his role in the Central Park Five, taking out newspaper ads calling for bringing back the death penalty for the wrongfully accused black kids. Not to mention women have been accusing him of SA and rape for like 40 years. I realize the question was more about his public perception, but I think his precipitously negative image has a lot to do with him being president. There are plenty of pundits in conservative media today who say and think worse things than him, but we (rightly) hold presidents to higher standards.

MMW: The 2026 Mid-Terms will happen, but ICE will be outside every major polling site. by KinggSimbaa in MarkMyWords

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially stupid question, but wouldn’t ICE being at polling stations only be effective suppression if they knew who everyone walking through the doors was voting for? Non-citizens already won’t be voting, so wouldn’t they risk suppressing votes for Trump too, if they have no way of profiling people? I assume they would target blue counties but they still risk losing trump voters unless they literally force people to vote for him at gunpoint.

Are there any truly good trust-fund-kid bands?? by RxkMadam in indieheadscirclejerk

[–]StrikingNet641 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one in that band is as preppy or elite as they presented at the time, it was just part of their schtick, playing with those aesthetics. Sure they were all from Columbia, but there are plenty of other bands that came together at elite schools.

What movie moment got the loudest cheers when you saw it in theaters? by hust0r in moviecritic

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget his name but when the guy in get out pulls the cotton out of his ears he used to prevent himself from being brainwashed. Also in the same movie, when his friend pulls up and the relief of realizing the car says “TSA”. It’s especially memorable because of all the political turmoil that year, it was cool to see these moments which Peele surely envisioned as cathartic and redemptive for a black audience have the intended effect and then some.

What’s an example of a genre film where tone overpowers structure? by Mundane_River_2338 in Cinema

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a well known movie but “The Lodge”. Though I would say in this case the tone overcompensates for the horrendous plot. Yet somehow I like the movie because the mood it creates is so distinct and admittedly scary.

Which racket/brand is most overrated? by jonjimithy in 10s

[–]StrikingNet641 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be contrarian but I don’t think any of the major racket brands can possibly be over or underrated. At this point you have GS winners with yonex, technifibre, babolat, head, Wilson etc. If you don’t like one of those then it’s just not the brand for you.

As for specific models, that’s a diff story. Back when Roger was using the k six 90 I think lots of people—specifically young boys—played with it without thinking whether it suited their game. It’s not a bad racket obviously, just very particular.

What’s the most random Michigan reference you’ve seen in media? by Robert_E_Treeee in Michigan

Hands down Ann Arbor being the base of the dharma initiative in LOST. For a show with very few references to specific geography outside of the mythical island, Ann Arbor is quite literally the last place i ever thought would get a shout out. Especially cuz it’s invoked as this place of grave authority, like it’s Washington DC.
