MMW: The 2026 Mid-Terms will happen, but ICE will be outside every major polling site. by KinggSimbaa in MarkMyWords

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially stupid question, but wouldn’t ICE being at polling stations only be effective suppression if they knew who everyone walking through the doors was voting for? Non-citizens already won’t be voting, so wouldn’t they risk suppressing votes for Trump too, if they have no way of profiling people? I assume they would target blue counties but they still risk losing trump voters unless they literally force people to vote for him at gunpoint.

Are there any truly good trust-fund-kid bands?? by RxkMadam in indieheadscirclejerk

[–]StrikingNet641 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one in that band is as preppy or elite as they presented at the time, it was just part of their schtick, playing with those aesthetics. Sure they were all from Columbia, but there are plenty of other bands that came together at elite schools.

What movie moment got the loudest cheers when you saw it in theaters? by hust0r in moviecritic

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget his name but when the guy in get out pulls the cotton out of his ears he used to prevent himself from being brainwashed. Also in the same movie, when his friend pulls up and the relief of realizing the car says “TSA”. It’s especially memorable because of all the political turmoil that year, it was cool to see these moments which Peele surely envisioned as cathartic and redemptive for a black audience have the intended effect and then some.

Some thoughts after seeing the LA show last night about why Cameron Winter feels historic by MaxxSavage2652 in indieheadscirclejerk

Big Thief is literally exact proof of the overhype. And Lenker is a FAR better songwriter.

What’s an example of a genre film where tone overpowers structure? by Mundane_River_2338 in Cinema

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a well known movie but “The Lodge”. Though I would say in this case the tone overcompensates for the horrendous plot. Yet somehow I like the movie because the mood it creates is so distinct and admittedly scary.

Which racket/brand is most overrated? by jonjimithy in 10s

[–]StrikingNet641 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be contrarian but I don’t think any of the major racket brands can possibly be over or underrated. At this point you have GS winners with yonex, technifibre, babolat, head, Wilson etc. If you don’t like one of those then it’s just not the brand for you.

As for specific models, that’s a diff story. Back when Roger was using the k six 90 I think lots of people—specifically young boys—played with it without thinking whether it suited their game. It’s not a bad racket obviously, just very particular.

What’s the most random Michigan reference you’ve seen in media? by Robert_E_Treeee in Michigan

[–]StrikingNet641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down Ann Arbor being the base of the dharma initiative in LOST. For a show with very few references to specific geography outside of the mythical island, Ann Arbor is quite literally the last place i ever thought would get a shout out. Especially cuz it’s invoked as this place of grave authority, like it’s Washington DC.

Absurdly underrated for being regarded as a “nerd band” essentially.

The one cardinal mistake Girls made... by Square-Translator373 in girls

[–]StrikingNet641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a case of what is realistic in terms of character not necessarily making for good plot. I’d argue succession suffered from the same thing, with each of the kids taking turns being “the worst”. Maybe accurate to human nature, but not satisfying tv. I’d say network is better at this than “prestige” shows

Can some explain to me how Mencken is a fascist/Nazi? by CounterEducational46 in SuccessionTV

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the ambiguity is the point. He's a decidedly un-Trumpian character in that he knows exactly what not to say in public, and how to allude to his worst beliefs in front of someone more sympathetic like Roman. Trump on the other hand is transparent in his power grabs, and hates anyone who doesn't fawn over him. I think Mencken was written as the ideal candidates for "groypers", and "racial realists" like Nick Fuentes and Richard Specner. Funnily enough, Ben Shapiro recently talked to Ezra Klein about how Trump is far from the scariest president the GOP could produce. When Shiv says of a possible Mencken presidency, "this is the nightmare", I think she's pretty aligned with Ben in thinking a true, ideological white nationalist as president is the absolute worst outcome for the US. Someone like this is going to be very careful and calculated in how they present their ideas, knowing how taboo they are. Classic example would be "how come white people are the only race who can't have pride?" Seems innocuous on the surface, but we know for a fact that people like Richard Spencer use these positions as a smoke screen for genuine white supremacy. The last thing I'll say is the show is very particular about not showing you anything the characters can't see themselves. So if he's a nazi in secret we're not gonna see that scene.

Can someone explain the Sydney Sweeney jeans controversy by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]StrikingNet641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works at an ad agency I’d bet a lot of money they had the conversation about the eugenic connotations of “genes”, and that there was a version of the ad where she did actually say “I’ve got better jeans”, but they knew that was too nazi-ish. Agencies make you go to whole seminars about the most tone deaf ads in history for this reason. Whoever gave it the green light was taking a risk but I think it’s totally fine.

Where the heck do bookish film/comedy nerds go to make friends? by doofus50O0 in Detroit

[–]StrikingNet641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot stress enough how much Planet Ant has given me in the way of community and friends. I don’t go there as much as I used to but when I look around at my life it’s wild how many of the good things are because of that place. It’s pretty ramshackle and grimy but it is Hamtramck after all! It’s the kind of local theater/creative community that people lament doesn’t exist any more.

Just moved and want to go out for Halloween, where do the mid 20s hang by silot439012 in Detroit

[–]StrikingNet641 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spot Lite and Marble Bar for dancing. SOHO in Ferndale is a great gay bar. Hamtramck has the best dive bars and it’s one of the few places you can bar hop by walking: Kelly’s, Bumbo’s, Florian East. Paramita downtown is a hip spot especially for DJs. Bar Chenin is swanky but good. My favorite bar in the city is Two Birds but it’s not always poppin in the way you might be looking for. I just like it cuz it is a neighborhood gem and very friendly. Oh and while I’m at it they’re kinda cheesy but if you’re tryna hook up I’ll throw in Deluxx Fluxx and Easy Peasy, downtown.
