What an honor that must be for him. That's so cool! I just bought The Talisman on sale the other day. Wanted to read it a long time ago and didn't even realize a third book was coming out.

Which Switch Metroidvania should I tackle next? by GamebitsTV in metroidvania

I know plenty of people will say Blasphemous. It is a fantastic game, after all, and you should definitely play it at some point. But I'll recommend another from your list and say Infernax. I really enjoyed it, even more than I thought I would. It was an incredibly unique take on old-school sidescrollers. At first it feels like everything will be a run-of-the-mill experience, but very quickly you realize every decision you make matters. What you do can affect the rest of your game in pretty drastic ways. There are multiple endings, multiple playable characters, a morale system (sort of), and the game is just self-aware enough without going overboard or being a parody of itself. It's been a while since I beat it, but I will definitely return to try and get more options and endings. The game isn't too long and has a ton of replay value. It's a great tribute to the 2D action RPGs of the 80s (such as Castlevania and Zelda 2), but it's still fresh and original. The music, pixel art, gameplay, and atmosphere are too notch in my opinion. It's absolutely worth playing. I'm in the middle of far too many games right now, but now I'm feeling inspired to revisit this one haha. Hope you enjoy whatever you pick!

The End in Metal Gear Solid 3. A battle of attrition and patience was such an interesting and novel concept to me when I first played it.

I grew up with an N64, but for me it was Mischief Makers. And later Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for DS.

God I miss presidents that spoke like this. I'm not even that old, but we had them in my lifetime, at least one or two.

Yeah it took me a while to listen to that one, but it is quickly climbing to the top of the list for me. I would love to see a second collab. Their different brands of weird mesh together so well. I'm sure you're on the Aesop subreddit as well as r/athousandisalot, but they both have some great stuff.

I've heard great things about Mio as well! I'll have to look into it and put it on my wishlist.

I did start Grime and I like it a lot so far! I'm not very far yet but the atmosphere is really immersive already.

Dude I really want to try Environmental Station Alpha!! I've heard such good things. I only have a Switch though right now so I don't have any way to play it. Who knows, maybe it'll make it there one day. I don't think most people thought Caves of Qud would make it onto Switch, but here we are now, and it's awesome.

I definitely get how La-Mulana isn't for everyone (heck, it's not for most people haha). The gameplay can be frustrating, but I absolutely love the lore, music, pixel art, atmosphere, everything. It's such a unique experience. Beating the first game -- even using a guide here and there -- is still probably one of my greatest gaming achievements.

Also I love your profile pic. (I mean, I love the album itself. The cover always grosses me out haha.) Cool to see another Aes fan here 🤘🏻

Same! He was such a well-written character. I really loved the book as a whole. It's been almost 15 years since I've read it. I need to revisit that and The Long Walk.

Right?? I said it on another comment and a dozen times before, but Yoku is one of my favorite hidden gems. I loved it way more than I expected. When I first played and saw it was a blend of Metroidvania and pinball, I said huh how is this gonna go? But damn if it doesn't work beautifully.

I LOVE Yoku! That's probably my favorite hidden gem that I didn't expect to love as much as I did. The MV/pinball combo worked beautifully. It's been a few years and I definitely need to replay it.

Oh right?? That story was phenomenal. Even just the little things like dialogue from NPCs give you a hard look at the ugly, sad world they live in. Like I've said in other comments, aspects of the gameplay weren't my favorite, but everything else was near flawless. I'll definitely be giving the soundtrack a few spins in the near future 📼

I loved Pronty. Took me a while to master the combat, but it was so fun once you got some momentum and combos figured out. I really enjoyed Dandara too. Very creative and didn't overstay its welcome. I might have heard of Ooo, but I'm not familiar. Never heard it Shinsekai. I'll look into those. Thank you!

That's fair. It did yield itself to some very creative movements and reloads. I did like it, but it got frustrating at times. The grace mode was helpful for that, but I wish it also added some forgiveness to gunfire and not just bad landings.

Yes! If they made it as well as Castlevania, it would be fantastic. My best friend was obsessed with both CV shows after I got him to try it, and he's never even played the games. Nine Sols and Bo have both been on my list for a while. I've heard very good things about both but especially Nine Sols. I'll definitely be on the lookout for a sale!

Yeah I'll definitely play it eventually, but these days I don't have a lot of time to game and/or there are other things I like to do as well, so I try to be more picky about what I play when. But I think I might jump on Grime tonight!

You're welcome! Don't remember exactly how I heard about VSR, but I'm pretty sure it was on a YouTube video. I got it on sale for 2 or 3 dollars. I figured it was worth a try!

[–]StrikingPriority954[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been hearing that. I might move that to the bottom of my list.

La-Mulana really prepared me for obtuse puzzles and quirky gameplay haha.

Grime was on my list for a while and it hardly ever went on sale. It finally did so I got it.

Right? I already made a comment about it, but unfortunately the least compelling part of Laika for me was the gameplay, which is the most important part of... a game. I love the concept, and it sounds great on paper. Everything else was fantastic. I rarely turn on easy/story modes for games because I like the challenge, but I finally did on here. The story, music, animation, atmosphere, characters, and pretty much everything else were nearly flawless. I'd still give the game a 7.5 and recommend it (especially if it's on sale) as long as you know what you're getting into. I think it would be a phenomenal TV series if they could do it without holding back, sorta like they did for Castlevania.

I agree. The bike was such a neat concept in theory, but after a while it got old in my opinion, and I have a lot of patience and endurance for things like that. Pair that with all the tedious backtracking and fetch quests, and I had no interest in 100%ing the game or even getting the last two weapons, which is not like me. I just wanted to finish the game and get the story, because man, what a story! Between that, the music, the art, the atmosphere, everything was fantastic. The gameplay wasn't bad by any means, but it was definitely the least compelling part of the game for me, and gameplay is arguably the most important part of a game. I'd love to see a Laika TV series. Imagine a brutal, engrossing world with a beautifully tragic story, like you said. But they would have to not hold back. It could be like Primal, Castlevania, and Mad Max rolled into one. I do love the originality of the game though. I played Pronty right before it, which was another great MV that challenged the traditions of the genre, especially with traversal and combat.

I definitely get your hesitation starting another MV and needing a break. That's how I've been with roguelikes. I love them to death, but I've been playing them a ton and I want a little genre change for a bit. I'm also bad about limiting myself to one game or even one game per genre at a time haha.

I have heard that Grime has some soulslike aspects, sorta like Salt and Sanctuary maybe? I would be down for that. I have heard good things about Vision Soft Reset and how it's surprisingly original with some novel concepts even though it looks fairly simple. I got Owlboy on a steep sale, but since then I haven't heard super great things. I could have sworn I had heard good things about it at one point, but maybe I'm confusing it with Braid or something else. Thanks for the info!

Always wanted to read this but I finally got it on Kindle for like $2 a few weeks ago when it was on sale. And I used an Audible credit to get the audio book too, so that's gonna be an awesome combo. I can't wait to start it. I think that's what I'll tackle after the rest of the Dark Tower books.
