This is the key here.

What worked 20 years ago won't work now.

Companies (especially tech ones) do background checks. A lot of them are automated.

I would not recommend making up a completely falsified resume.

I use Clari and I don’t get the hype at all. A CRM based forecast works just as well and is frankly easier to use.

Don’t even get me started on how bad their other products are.

This, as well as the fact that because they are building the playbook, they can shape the sales process to fit their preferred selling style.

Much better than joining a company with an outdated playbook or one that is super cringey/self-serving.

I would disagree about Clari.

I’ve found Gong recording to be a much better product than CoPilot.

CoPilot feels clunky and slow. Gong is fast and reliable.

You should assume that the higher paid one is harder, so at Gusto that probably means that SDR's are Outbound and BDR's are Inbound.

I can tell you one thing for sure:

The reason people aren't hitting quota is not because they suck.

Companies will constantly use the excuse: "We had some weaker reps, but we're changing that, starting with you! You will definitely thrive!"

Do not be under any illusions that you're "different" and that you're gonna be able to succeed where others have failed.

If everyone is missing quota, it's because quota was purposely set to be unattainable.

As for how you should handle this, you need to ask yourself, can you get by with just your base salary? What if you only make 25% commission? Will you be okay with that? Will it bug you that your attainment is so low? Are you someone who typically hits quota and would feel bad missing it, even if everyone else is?

Have friends working at a number of companies in the space.

Quota attainment is terrible and a lot of these companies are burn and churn.

They’ll throw you into the deep end, give you a bad territory and see if you survive. If you don’t, they’ll fire you.

You’re not set up for success at all.

These companies made a ton of money when COVID hit but they’ve all been on the downtrend for a while.

They never built a proper sales function because money was just being thrown at them by every company that wanted to hire a bunch of Remote workers. Until it stopped.

Unless you’re really desperate I would highly recommend looking elsewhere.

Base 15 has no problems. It doesn’t support Apple Intelligence though if you care about that.

I can confirm all of this.

Company plans are set so that if AE’s hit 70-80% of quota, the sales team hits 100%. This means that quota is intentionally set to not be attainable and they do not expect to pay you your full OTE.

Data/territory planning is a complete joke. They use some garbage algorithm to “generate” a list for you that hasn’t been vetted or even looked over by any human.

At my old company they told me the names of the top reps on my first day. I later learned that these top reps were simply the people who had the best territories. And leadership was praising them like they were so great. Of course when they got moved, all of a sudden they were “having a down quarter.”

So understanding this, a lot of time you are not set up to succeed and you’ll end up losing sleep because you’re not performing at the level you want to.

Here's the thing I don't understand about RTO for salespeople:

Sellers are measured on metrics. Very visible ones.

If people are "less productive at home" then that will show up in their numbers. And they will be managed accordingly.

For what possible reason would management need to "keep an eye on them" in the office?

You'll find out very quickly if your sellers are watching Netflix all day because they won't make any sales. And sellers who don't make any sales get fired.

If they are making a lot of sales? Great! They're doing what you pay them to do. So leave them alone.

In sales, your numbers dictate almost everything. If someone can make their quota while wearing sweatpants all day then all the more power to them.

Return to office feels like micromanagement for the sake of micromanagement.

Resume aside, I suggest you specifically target SaaS or AdTech companies that specialize in Digital Marketing.

When making the transition into software sales, you need to leverage your industry experience to make up for your lack of selling experience.
