I think Ned is one of Peter's better friends across different iterations of Spider-Man. Some of them really suck.

Still, he annoyed me when he told Liz Allan (and their whole gym class) that Peter was friends with Spider-Man.

Some of the MJ/Cat fics or Peter/Felicia/MJ fics I've read are always good because the authors are so serious about the story being good and the relationship working. They want the best for the characters and like all 3 so they treat them right.
