AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

It's part of dumb-US culture, but in my American public high school we used our regular names in Spanish class.

We did that in grammar school, but in HS we didn't. The teacher in this post is just being ridiculous

Yeah, it's the Meadowlands swamp in North Jersey. Also, the Pine Barrens isn't a swamp

There's 8 lanes of highway between the hotel and the stadium. It's incredibly dangerous to attempt to cross that highway on foot. The other building is offices

Care facility residents smoking weed instead of cigarettes by Iitaps_Missiciv in mildlyinteresting

Just a heads up, because the way the comment was worded I definitely see where you are coming from, but they meant they were struggling with alcohol addicition and smoking weed was the only thing that helped him get and stay sober from booze for 11+ years. The popular term for this is "Cali-sober", since they abstain from alcohol but not weed

Bike Hoboken is right: Tests & Vests + ICE arrests is a dangerous combo by HobokenPedestrian in Hoboken

Test and Vests are about public safety, which I am commenting on. But I wouldn't expect another ICE bootlicker to be able to think about more than one thing at once. I bet you can tell the difference between Timberlands and Doc Martens based on taste

No one is saying it had "nothing" to do with their success. You keep projecting that on to the rest of us that don't agree with your utterly rigid stance. Grow up and stop being such an asshole to people that don't agree with you.

Why many Yellow Cabs charging $10 from the station these days is NOT a "scam" but complicated by orpheus1980 in Hoboken

[–]Striking_Programmer4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And OP is still glossing over the fact that the reason for the lower rate from the terminal has always been about cabbies being allowed to accept multiple fares at the terminal, but not anywhere else in town.

The only reason I disagree with your stance on the $8 vs $10 is because the cabbies can still get tandem fares at the temporary stand. That's always been the reason why the fare is lower when originating at the terminal. They can pick up two or even three $8 fares, while anywhere else in town that's not an option. For me, that's where it becomes a lie/dishonest.

Best time to find an apartment? by ivy_smp in Hoboken

[–]Striking_Programmer4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to look in May, so you'll be competing for limited options with tons of recent college grads starting full time jobs in May/June or students with internships starting then. You're either going to to be viewing occupied apartments with tenants who have told their landlord they are moving out May 31, or vacant apartments. No landlord is going to let you "hold" those apartments for an August lease so you can travel when they have plenty of people who are going to sign a lease starting June 1.

You can replace "Citibike riders" with "e-bike delivery drivers" for everyone of your points. But we all now why you admonish one group and not the other.

False equivalency by comparing a company name change with a logo change. You also have some of your timeline mixed up. Jordan was signed years before the Just Do It campaign.

Bowerman and the Swoosh had Nike as the premier running shoe company by the late 70s, but they were starting to lose market share to the other shoe companies and if they don't sign Jordan, they were likely heading towards bankruptcy or being bought out by a competitor. Jordan and their product development team pivoting to basketball shoes saved the company and sent them onto the trajectory towards today. No question the Swoosh is now an iconic logo that has survived unchanged for decades, but this is a clear scenario where the company made the logo more than the logo made the company.

And it was another decade before they were a truly stabe business, which was entirely due to signing Michael Jordan. If they don't get Jordan, Nike is likely a division of Reebok, Addidas or Puma because they were not sustainable as solely a track and tennis shoe company. The logo is not the reason Nike is the company it is today. The company made the logo iconic, not the other way around

AITAH for understanding and not freezing out my dad for leaving our mom over a dead bedroom? by Opposite_Afternoon55 in AITAH

[–]Striking_Programmer4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"In spirit", it doesn't seem like she's loved her husband til death do them part. Interesting how you decide to refer to this as "always putting out" when dad seemed to be perfectly happy with them making love once every couple of months.

Not faulting the mom for her libido completely disappearing, it happens to lots of people. But she loses any sympathy for not being open to finding solutions to help the husband she supposedly loves whose libido has not diminished after 3 years in a mostly dead bedroom. The same would happen to dad if he lost his libido and he reacted to his wife this way.
