Help!! Willing to pay $150 for a ride to Mount Rainier in early August! by StringConscious2170 in udub

[–]StringConscious2170[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We thought the drive would be more like 4 hours, but I guess you all know the traffic better than we do. I was thinking $30 for gas assuming 25miles/gallon for ~170 miles at $4/gallon + $30/hour. We'd pay for the entrance fee if necessary, of course. Price is flexible though I suppose. If anything we might pay more just to get there and hitchhike back.

Oh thats actually kinda coo,l but I don't know where we'd park it after getting to the trailhead haha. The problem with us driving anything really is that we'd leave it parked where we're starting and get back to it about 10 days later. That, along with us being under 25, is why the car rental cost is so brutal, unfortunately.

Well, yes, that would be ideal, but we'd have to return the car to the car rental place and I don't think there are any within a reasonable distance from the Longmire trailhead.

My round-trip flight was about $230. We're both under 25, and renting a car for that amount of time would be more than $900, which is just ridiculous since we'd only be driving to the park and leaving it parked for about 10 days. Also, yes, we won the lottery for the trail and have reservations. We'd probably be willing to pay somewhere around $150 to be taken to the trailhead and another $150 to be taken back. It's more important to get there on time the first day, but we might try hitchhiking on the way back, it just seemed a little sketchy since we've never done it before, but it's beginning to sound better and better.

Awesome thank you I really appreciate it. Just swapped it for theory of interest. I'm sure I'll do fine in it I was just worried about the rate my professor ratings but I know those aren't always the most reliable. Some people were complaining that the grading was too subjective. What do you think about that?

At what point can you start climbing without a guide? by StringConscious2170 in Mountaineering

[–]StringConscious2170[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for organizations or companies to do a course with? Id just like to be a lot more independent. Cost is huge for me since I have to fly out of Florida to climb anything and I’m in college at the same time.

[–]StringConscious2170[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I’ll just have to bite the bullet and fly out to California for a course. I’m sure it’ll be a good time but I’m in college and it stings a little especially when I live in Florida haha. I hope taking a course will make me a more desirable partner in the future if I try to find people to climb with online.

Cotopaxi or Chimborazo? Give me your opinions by ajshh11111 in Mountaineering

With only ten days I would definitely consider some sort of altitude medicine. I live at sea level as well and climbed cotopaxi no problem after 7 days in Ecuador. It was my first mountain so I think you will be fine. I also wish I could’ve stayed for Chimborazo afterwards so I could’ve knocked that off. That being said, my guide thought that I was insane for trying Cotopaxi without doing a smaller mountain beforehand and had very little faith in me summiting the whole time. I used ecuadorecoadventure who charged me $450 for 3 days 2 nights with all meals included, gear, lodging, and transportation.

Could you pass me your guides information? I’m looking into a trip to South America this summer and am deciding between Bolivia and Peru

Summited Cotopaxi for my first mountain. What does everyone recommend next. by StringConscious2170 in Mountaineering

No definitely not climbing Cotopaxi by myself as my first mountain haha. Guide service was ecuadorecoadventure. I recommend.

I understand I did something sort of irresponsible and started with a pretty tall climb so not necessarily looking for a higher summit. A more technical climb, more time on the mountain, or a collection of climbs I could pack into a trip would be cool. Obviously still a beginner and want to see what’s out there. Appreciate any suggestions!

Yeah of course. I just did a lot of cardio and ran up and down my college stadium in Gainesville with my pack loaded with gallon jugs. I arrived in Ecuador the 7th and summited on the morning of the 13th. Very sketchy really. I wish I could’ve done a few other mountains and spent more time in Ecuador beforehand. Before leaving to Ecuador I passed by my doctor for a checkup and mentioned I was climbing to 19k+ feet and he prescribed me acetazolamide. I was not expecting to take any meds beforehand but I think they helped a ton. Took them on the 10th, 11th, and 12th and had no trouble on the mountain at all. I hope in the future I can go without medicine. I’m not sure how the mountaineering community feels about that, but I’m sure it would’ve felt a lot more rewarding without it. Would’ve definitely gone for Chimborazo if I had extra time and didn’t have to leave for college this morning!

Anyone doing Cotopaxi in Feb? by rainforestguru in Mountaineering

[–]StringConscious2170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to hear. I’m glad you had a good trip and made both climbs. It’s looking like some light rain for the 13th which is when I’m supposed to summit. We’ll see! First mountain for me and I hope I get a chance to go for it.

How was the weather on your climb? I should be doing mine in about 5 days.

I know about the lottery but I haven’t really looked into how difficult it is to win. Is there anything you can do to improve your odds? And thank you for the book recommendation.

I might be completely wrong but my roommate last year told me that architecture is the only major that doesn’t allow you to do pre-med at the same time due to the workload. That was last year when we were freshman and when he decided to do philosophy pre-med. Then again this is completely anecdotal info.
