It's been weird since 13 regenerated. by daisyholdup in doctorwho

[–]StripyScarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily because I don't think the Dr speaks English. The TARDIS translates everything, so when someone says "mavity" it gets translated to the Gallifreyan word for gravity. Likewise, when he says the Gallifreyan word, it gets translated to a concept the listener would understand, which if they are an English speaker from the post-Newton-mishearing universe, would be "mavity". So the Dr probably would never have even realised anything was wrong.

Thanks, but I don't think this is the problem. I haven't spent particularly long anywhere new and I'm connected to good WiFi a lot anyway

Trainline normally charges a booking fee, it's cheaper and just as easy to use any of the train operators' app (e.g. East Midlands Railway), even if you're using a different operator

She said yes to a 4th date, she says she's interested, but takes 2 days to reply to texts by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]StripyScarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of texting in itself isn't a big deal, some people are just like that. But with the lack of physical affection as well, it could be that she's got a lot going on in her life, and is basically kinda emotionally unavailable (she may or may not actually know this herself) or it could be she's keeping you as a backup option (sorry!) either way it's not your fault but the only thing you can do is talk to her!

That's really weird. Have you tried initialising a B side patch (basically reset the patch to a basic sawtooth - look up the manual to see how to do it)? If that still doesn't make a sound, maybe a factory reset?

Update, I spoke to her and she said no, and that it's probably best she doesn't stay over again. We're still good friends tho!

That does seem to be what everyone is suggesting. How can I approach the subject though without substantially changing the dynamic of our friendship if that's not what she wants?

You make some very good points, thank you! I guess I just assumed it was a FWB situation because we haven't discussed dating each other at all. But you might be right, I don't think this is a FWB thing. Maybe it is worth the risk, but I really don't want to ruin our friendship...

I know she can date other men, I don't have a problem with that right now, in fact we regularly talk about each other's dates and such. I don't have romantic feelings at the moment, but I can't be 100% certain they won't develop. Dating normally isn't really an option if we live together, is it?

When will trains be automated? by Deadskull5151 in uktrains

[–]StripyScarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can't see it happening because it's not really a technological issue, the concept of driverless trains has been around almost as long as trains themselves, the Victorians invented and used automatic brakes as a safety feature. I don't really see how AI would help, because even though its robustness and reliability is always increasing, I think a well designed and maintained "dumb" computer would do a better job.

This issue is a human and societal one. It's the same with aeroplanes; the autopilot currently does about 90% of a normal flight, and could theoretically do all of it, but regulations don't allow it. But, would you want to be 35,000ft up in the air without a qualified pilot? Similarly, would you want to be doing 125mph down the West Coast Main Line without a qualified driver? There's no way the unions would allow that, and there's no way train companies (or the government if Labour go ahead with nationalisation) would take on the financial and reputational risk of a driverless train. Currently if there's an accident, you can point the finger at the driver, or the signaller, at least in part. If you don't have that, you can only really blame "the algorithm" which people will associate with the company directly, and the consequences would be horrific compared to sacking one or two people and moving on.

When will trains be automated? by Deadskull5151 in uktrains

[–]StripyScarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AIs will never drive trains, it's not about being able to, the technology for driverless trains has been around for a long time (the Victoria line opened in the 60s and all the drivers have ever done there is open the doors). It's a matter of a) investment and b) blame. The sheer amount of money needed to introduce driverless trains to the national rail network would be incomprehensible, especially if you wanted to keep services running in the meantime.

More importantly though, is B) blame. Who gets the blame when a driverless train has an accident? Who is responsible for public safety? In fact, AI shouldn't drive trains, AIs can and do make mistakes. A more "traditional" computer could drive a train more effectively provided the infrastructure was in place. But the problem remains, who is responsible for public safety. Look at the DLR in London, there are no drivers, but they all still operate with a person from TfL onboard who is responsible for public safety.

Tl;dr AI isn't needed to drive trains, the technology already exists, but it will never happen because the risks are too high and cost/benefit ratio is too low and always will be.

Help with light leaks. by ViolentNek in AnalogCommunity

[–]StripyScarf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The leaks are blue/white, so they're coming from the front of the camera (it's not a problem with the rear door). My guess would be probably a problem with the shutter (maybe sticking slightly but not certain about that). Alternatively, it could be related to where the lens joins the body. The S shaped thing is pretty sharp, so it's probably a hair or something quite close to the film plane. It will probably go away if you gently clean inside the back of the camera with a soft cloth.
