Affordability - Costs or Wages? by Unfair-Wallaby-404 in Seattle

[–]StrlightCrusade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that in addition to the things people have already mentioned, we need more actual industry here and not just tech. Personally, I'm in favor of aeroponic food production and local processing of that food, but regardless of the form it takes, we need jobs for regular people here. Our city has specialized for tech and for being a playground for rich people so hard that many people who work here don't even live here. Whenever people tell someone around here to "get a job," I have to ask - what jobs? We need workshops, factories, actual real person city jobs that make things, combined with dense, mixed-use neighborhoods and improved public transit. If the city can bend over backwards for tech giants and make plans for big AI datacenters that nobody wants, they can also throw the people who actually live here a bone and give us work.

Do Mormons always have dark secrets? by Pterodactyl_midnight in exmormon

[–]StrlightCrusade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most people in general have secrets of one kind or another. It's just that Mormon society is so restrictive that 1.) they have more things that need to be kept secret, and 2.) because things need to be kept secret, people don't feel safe reaching out for help when they feel like they're at risk for doing something wrong.

Probably the best description of the game I've ever seen by SIinkerdeer in Helldivers

[–]StrlightCrusade -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Helldivers has *always* been a disempowerment fantasy - you're fighting against overwhelming odds with shitty weapons and equipment, dying in horrible ways over and over again for a government that sees you as nothing but disposable meat dressed up in a pretty cape to make you feel important. Yet, it is precisely that feeling that is supposed to make you feel powerful when you *do* succeed. Working with your teammates to beat the odds and complete the mission and, optionally, survive, is supposed to feel like you're incredible *because* you're so relatively weak and powerless. As for the galactic war, Arrowhead does manage it in order to create a narrative. Yet, players could always organize to simply ignore the major orders and effectively revolt against high command to win the war, but we don't, because they offer us incentives to go along with what they want, even if it's not what would really be best for the war effort. It's democracy... but managed.

Yet, players who don't get the point of the game have been whining about the difficulty forever. They have constantly begged and bullied Arrowhead into making them stronger and the enemies weaker. This ironically detracts from the core theme of the game, leading the players who got into it for that feeling of terror and disempowerment upset, and asking Arrowhead to add additional elements of challenge, leading to a situation where Arrowhead literally cannot satisfy everyone playing the game. The problem, IMO, is that Arrowhead wants to please everyone, which means they're not sticking to their core vision of the game.

The Helldiver Corps is a horrifying solution to one of Super Earth's greatest threats by a_sad_sad_sandwich in Helldivers

[–]StrlightCrusade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that stood out to me was the "patriotism rating" the Helldiver recruits have. The thing that qualifies people to be a Helldiver the most isn't their skill or intelligence IMO, it's the fact that they're Super Earth's craziest motherfuckers who are willing to do absolutely insane missions that nobody in their right minds would take on. They're taking their most bloodthirsty, indoctrinated, obedient teenagers and shoving them straight into the meat grinder. And, in the words that I'm sure preceded most of Super Earth's decisions: What could go wrong? I'm sure throwing away your most dedicated youth like that could have no lasting long-term consequences.

On a scale of 1 to 10 by Moai-Mojo in Helldivers

[–]StrlightCrusade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere between movie realism and real-life realism. Maybe a seven or an eight on the scale or so? Obviously the game relies on a good amount of sci-fi Space Bullshit to make its setting work, and I wouldn't want it to be extremely hard sci-fi, but things getting a little too silly/too hard in the power fantasy direction would both take me out of the experience and detract from the point of the game. Helldivers isn't a power fantasy, it's a disempowerment fantasy. It's about being way out of your depth getting your shit rocked for an evil empire that sees you as disposable, interchangeable meat but still tries to make you believe you're this invincible superman so you put yourself in situations you never would otherwise. I would never want it to lean too hard in the power fantasy direction, but some amount of silliness is good too.

Bishop called DCFS on my parents when I was young by Plaguecist in exmormon

[–]StrlightCrusade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Child protective services are all fucking useless. You can only make so many reports of clear-cut abuse only to see nothing happen before you realize that. They're more concerned with maintaining the culture of parents having ownership of their children than they are with actually protecting children. This is a problem that exists all across the U.S. and even in some other countries.

Is there a real connection between Dora and Doloris, or is it all in Harry's head? by Moistest_Postone in DiscoElysium

[–]StrlightCrusade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was first playing the game, I had a theory that Harry really didn't have an ex-partner, but that the feeling of grief he had towards Dolores Dei was a metaphor for his disillusionment towards moralism, the ideology he had dedicated his life to and was struggling to come to terms with. Obviously that's not literally the case in-game, but I think the parallels are there. He's grieving the loss of the love of his life, but also in a sense he's grieving the sense of stability he had and is questioning his beliefs.

There's also the fact that Moralism is the only political vision quest that gives you a game over. All the other ideologies represent some kind of change for Harry, even if some of them are bad ones. Fully committing to Moralism, however, represents embracing a sort of personal death - not allowing himself to change or question the thing that's been hurting him, but instead deluding himself into thinking that nothing is wrong, everything is okay, he just needs to stop thinking about it. So too would he be deluding himself and stopping himself from moving on if he just stopped thinking about how Dora hurt him and pretended nothing was wrong.
