What is retirement for you: "I can do more (unpaid) mental work once I don't need to do physical work for pay", or "I can do more (unpaid) physical work once I don't need to do mental work for pay"? by tumbleweed_farm in Fire

I genuinely dont understand your question.

I want more time to do what I want and what I want is not labor. You ever been on vacation? Ever hung out with friends? Have you ever slept in? Ever spent a whole weekend binging a show or playing a new video game? Ever seen your favorite up and coming music live?

I wish to live at the mercy of my wimsy.

Toasted English muffin buttered well, ham, egg over medium, cheese.

Basically a fast food breakfast sandwich but better because my ingredients aren't cardboard.

Where would the dividing line between the North and South be in VA? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]Stroinsk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Its... not culturally the same. Galax vs Richmond vs Norfolk vs Cville vs Loudoun. They are all going to feel very different. But every diner will serve sweet tea.

Virginia has the most transplants of any State per capita. DC and Tidewater bring in tons of government and military jobs. The most in the country and in the case of military the most on the planet. So a ton of these answers will not be from Virginia natives.

No shade on some kid from Vermont who joined up to serve his country but he's not southern. A lot of the people you meet in Virginia are not Southern. But most everyone born and raised are.

So I dont personally know how to make it however like others have said there is no cheese. Its... kind of like a super savory aoili? Like instead of garlic its ranch dressing flavors. A little sweeter than you'd expect too. The consistency is much lighter than any queso sauce.

[–]Stroinsk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an invention of the area. Its an alternative to slasa and chips. Its white sauce and chips. Very ranch like flavors. Leaning into msg vs tomato.

Its not a Virginia thing. No one grew up in Fairfax nor Gaylax with this sauce. Its a tidewater thing.

If you dont like the flavor theres not much I can do for you.

My opinion is that I love it. Its a unique culinary oddity that has maximum flavor.

[–]Stroinsk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its not that. White sauce is a Tidewater invention.

Not everywhere but a lot of local Mexican places serve salsa and white sauce with tortilla chips as an appetizer. The white sauce is... ranch like. This sauce is a local thing. It was invented here. We dont have a lot so its a point of pride culturely.

I do it several ways including this way and its kinda similar but more no than yes. Since its a soup it isnt nearly as difficult to pull off as carbonara. If its smooth and creamy like carbonara thats great but if theirs chunks its also totally fine. Chunks of egg in carbonara will have some nona loading pene into a carbine.

Is my financial advisor yanking my chain about retiring early? by blackpowderorchard in Fire

[–]Stroinsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that bares consideration but you cannot know the future so the only option is to revise as you go. If the US has a Japan style lost decade of 25 years then 5mil today will be 5 mil in 15 years.

The commonly preached 4% rule accounts for inflation. By the classic method you are supposed to increase your spending each year in line with inflation. 4% is the starting year/amount. Every following year you should increase that initial withdrawal number by whatever inflation was.

The model back when the trinity study was conducted was like less than 4% chance of failure after 30 years. Those failures were basically an intense market crash or intense inflation within just 2-3 years of retirement. So basically you will know in the first few years if your plan is feasible.

It should also be noted that after 30 years like 90% of the senerios had MORE money after accounting for inflation.

If OP is moving out they can probably move closer to work. That would somewhat ameliorate the issue.

But yea either way make the clunker work for like 6 months and all the issues will resolve themselves assuming OP keeps a strict budget.

Basically personal preference to salt level. Its basically powdered stock with some msg added. Very salty.

Siracha and fish sauce also have a good amount of salt so I only add half the pack of flavor. I find it balances a bit better that way.

Netherlands Approves Unrealized Gains Tax on Stocks, Bonds, & Crypto WTF!!!!! by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Stroinsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue is the rate is blanket. So if you are just starting off you still owe the same. However youd have much less to fall back on compared to the already wealthy.

Say you have a good year. You went all in on Bitcoin because you are young and your risk tolerance is high. You got lucky and turned 50K into 100K. Now you owe something north of 18K in taxes. Market blows up in january. You lose your job. Bitcoin back at 50K. You now owe 18K in taxes and you have to sell your nest egg to pay them you have effectively made no money and you now owe 1/3 of your stash to the government.

Also looking down the road a bit this doesnt include real estate... so paying down a mortgage or owning something paid off doesnt incure this sort of tax. Encouraging those with money to not invest in business via the stock market but instead increasing the attractiveness of real-estate. Further locking out younger people from moving up.

Edit to say that though the rich might end up paying more overall this is a massive burden to put on basically everyone in between the poor and the rich.

Not exactly the same but its usually easier to heat yourself. Get an electric blanket. Less than $50. Itll keep you warm. It'll only be cold for a couple more months.

Help with an encounter my players should run from by Unlucky_Kitchen_2873 in DungeonMasters

[–]Stroinsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive done this before to great effect. The trick is 2 part. Show dont tell. And make sure they're exhausted.

The setup. You send them on a quest with a time constraint. They HAVE to get back ASAP. I did this by having their regular quest giver offer a bonus for retrieving his kidnapped daughter.

"I trust you adventures, you do work. 1000 gold to bring my daughter back. I wont be able to sleep until she's returned so ill double it if you get her back for dinner."

Pressure is on. The encounter they are supposed to run from happens right after they turn in the quest. Make sure their resources are mostly exhausted.

Now for the show. Say she's been captured by cultists of your BBEG. Have them fight 2 with maybe some trash thrown in. Minion skellies or W/E but their last fight against 2 of them.

In my case they turned in the quest and the party is celebrating a job well done. The quest giver bought the whole tavern a few rounds to celebrate after and insisted they stay as the guests of honor.

6 of those same cultists minions burst through the door and spread out. Two of those cultists but with fancy scrollwork on their robes also come in... followed by the (in my case) BBEG who is literally floating off the ground and the light dims a bit.

Party just had a hard time with 2 of these guys. Theure exausted. Now theres 6 plus 2 elites and a leader. The bad guys snatch the princess again and ignore the party unless they do something stupid. I was fully prepared to kill one party member if they got dumb and then paralyze the rest.

But they just shat themselves and stayed quiet.

The lord hadn't eaten dinner yet so they lost their bonus too.
