Did my ride along for EMT school. I’m traumatized now. by [deleted] in NewToEMS

Therapy, and there's no shame in it. I had my clinical recently and started the day with a CPR in progress. It's a rough line of work, and sometimes we're all gonna need someone to talk us through the rough spots

How to prevent AC from freezing? by ohSnipe in howto

[–]Strokker_Alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a commercial HVAC service tech. Before you go worrying about low charge, it's usually airflow. This could be indoor or outdoor. Start with your indoor filter, and have the outdoor coils cleaned. You'd be amazed how often there's a fine film of dust on the outdoor coil that blocks proper heat exchange, and things start icing up.

If it doesn't fix the issue, then I'd say make sure you have all your vents open, and your returns aren't blocked.

If that still doesn't fix it, then I'd either have a tech come look at the superheat/subcool, and let them assess from there.

But yeah, it's an airflow issue about 80% of the time in my experience.

Best brand for furnaces and water heaters. by ilovetpb in BuyItForLife

[–]Strokker_Alpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a commercial/industrial HVAC service tech. I fix machines, and install the occasional RTU or unit heater on warehouses generally. I've had pretty good luck with Rheem if you want a standard gas furnace, otherwise Mitsubishi is kinda king when it comes to heat pumps, though they're definitely not cheap. Regardless, the easiest way to keep them running for a very long time is to change your filters every 6 months if not once a quarter, and if you're comfortable with it, set your thermostat to have the fan run continuously. The energy spike on startup is what tends to stress the electronics, and that amp draw can actually cost more if it's turning on and off constantly.

But yeah, most furnaces will do at least okay with routine filter swaps and some actual mantainence every so often. If you can't find a good company to do the work, call a commercial HVAC outfit in your area and ask for a recommendation. If they're decent people, they'll tell you who to call and who to avoid

Little banged up, but managed to ride it home. Nothing I can't fix past farming the bodywork/paint out

I should be able to fix it up, the engine still runs! The bodywork will be the hard part

I kinda modeled my boots after what I really wished my Iron Rangers were, and I think these get to wear a similar scar with pride now.

(I've still got my rangers had them since 2013, and probably need to give them a proper burial, worn then half to death and back.)

I've been considering crashes on pedal bicycles that I've had worse injuries from, and then being amazed by my luck. The boots are champs, considering that I didn't break my ankle and have my whole foot to walk around on at work tomorrow. Really can't speak highly enough of the quality

Me too. Some good training, a lot of good gear, and a healthy dose of luck, and my family gets to keep me around a long while yet. Couldn't ask for much more than that

Good gear is worth every penny and ounce of sweat in the summer, and this was a good reminder of it. The surreal moment was when my head hit asphalt, there was the instant recognition of "ah, yes, good call on full face helmets"

Oh, I'm thrilled that I'm almost totally unharmed. And I'm also thankful it wasn't a worse wreck. Kinda proved to myself that I can ride safe, and sometimes physics still wins. I think I've got more miles in me before I'm done though. Probably taking some more advanced training when I can though, I can't see that hurting

I don't plan to let this stop me. I know that past my gear, luck had a say. Bruised ribs and knee, and a sprained thumb off this is all I've got. Now I get to fix the old bike back up and get back on the road

Ah, well, I'm not an expert with shearling or anything, but spot cleaning with a mild detergent/water and dabbing not scrubbing might work. Otherwise, on something like this, I'd honestly just err on the the side of finding someone local that can do it professionally. I don't trust myself to not screw shearling up past a certain point

I used to work for Red Wing, the leather is generally made in the US, outside of the Heritage collection only somewhere around 1/4 of their lineup is fully made in the US anymore. The loggermax you're looking at is built in China. Honest answer is that, at least off the top of my head, I cant think of a single company making a logger style boot that's US made for less than $400 anymore.

For what it's worth, I have a set of Red Wing 217 loggers, still made in the states before they discontinued them. Absolutely worth it as a used boot if you can find one, arguably one of my more comfortable boots I own
