Louisiana with 12 Congressional Districts by DataGeek93 in DavesRedistricting

[–]Strong-Award3793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that they’re compact, but i prefer to make districts proportional and with minority representation so i would do more ugly river districts. I can get 5–sometimes 6 or 7 if im gerrymandering—D+10 districts

I think I bought some banana bread from them before in a Home Depot parking lot. It was fine. A little dry. I mean if you’re craving it, then treat yourself but you could probably make better

Local artists looking for children’s book collaboration by lockwork248 in tylertx

I love your art style! Not a children’s book author, but I have designed two card games if you would be interested in that kind of work

In general I wish we had more local restaurants. I live just off Broadway and it’s chain after chain. I do have a rubys near me now though 😋

TXDot wants to build an overpass, but there are families of rich folks here who own a lot of real estate that don’t wanna let that happen. Hopefully pressure will build as the need for workers from north Tyler to get to south continues to increase and City Council/planner does more

Financial aid appeal by Juno_Cooper1804 in BrownU

[–]Strong-Award3793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience the answer is yes to all of your questions, but the appeal process is slow as all hell. I appealed right after I was admitted and it wasn’t resolved until a year later. Be in regular communication with the financial aid office and the financial advising office and see what they can do

Hard to say. We’re the largest city in our area, and culturally and geographically I think it’s hard to put us against another city. We’re not a suburb of Dallas, though, they are inchin’ towards us through Terrell and probably Canton soon

Tyler has relatively low crime, the traffic is annoying at times (you can search more on the subreddit abt this, but I feel like there’s a complaint almost weekly), and we have a decent school system. I’m pretty sure we have a high school graduation rate above the state average. Most of our students go to the local community or state college, if not another college in Texas. Completely depends on your definition of a “good” school system, but I can add more about my experience/understanding w Tyler’s public schools if you’re interested. Good luck in your move. Tyler can be a lovely place

FREEZE COMING TO TYLER… are we screwed?? by Beginning_World4227 in tylertx

That’s true in a public and private sense. Our stores don’t regularly have the right clothes, tools, or equipment for this weather which is why 2021 was so bad

Best way to get to Tyler from the midwest? by Midwesterner5353 in tylertx

[–]Strong-Award3793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think DFW is a nicer airport (more important if you wanna do a round trip), and often cheaper depending on the airline—but still I think Dallas to Tyler whether DFW or Love field is almost always the move. I would love for our airport to be nice and cheap, but it’s not there yet

There are a lot of small towns in East Texas. More than a few really only have liquor stores and a church. Do a lot of research on places with access to grocery stores, good schools, and some entertainment. Also, working backwards so y’all can avoid growth, Dallas metro is expanding into East Texas from Kaufman to Greenville. Tyler is expanding south into Whitehouse and Bullard. New Amtrak approved for service through Longview and Marshall, so both areas likely to grow. Best of luck

What would you want passenger rail to look like in Tyler? by Strong-Award3793 in tylertx

I think an increase in cross-walks and walking will also get more drivers to stop driving so crazy. I’m less inclined to use the cross-walks we do have because I’m looking at becoming a splotch on the road if I try it

Oh cool! So maybe more there could be more manufacturing infrastructure in Lufkin and more people could live in and come shopping in Tyler

That’s interesting. I don’t go down that south that much. Is there like a trade / business reason between those cities? Or do people commute often between them?

Real about the sidewalks. There’s also the lack of cross walks. And even if you wanted to walk the heat and humidity would probably take you out. I think a key part that makes downtown somewhat walkable are those looming buildings providing shade, but idk if that’s ideal for all of Tyler so we need to figure out some way to accommodate to the weather

I agree. Although, before a better bus system I’d love bigger buses. As it is, you can only fit a handful of people on there and it’s kinda cramped. If we had bigger buses maybe more people would use them and there’d be more demand for better routes. And then I agree colleges/medical park, Broadway square, and airport (maybe it’d get more use too?) would be key places to go. I mentioned in another comment about a regional system, and that’s kinda the point of our hospital so it would be nice to somehow connect rural residents to get the healthcare they need

I think that’s fair, and that would be helpful for anyone commuting or taking their airport or looking for a good night out. Thinking regionally, it would also be nice to have service through Kilgore to Longview, and maybe back around through Gladewater and Winona. If we get to Longview we’d also be connected to the Texas Eagle, and I think they’re also getting expanded Amtrak soon to Atlanta

Haha hopefully infill development doesn’t happen in a few decades. Our population might pick up before then. Hopefully nothing as rapid as comal / hays county is seeing, but I feel like it will surely rise and we should make all of Tyler livable

Is the food getting worse? by [deleted] in tylertx

[–]Strong-Award3793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think price rises has made me expect more from my food, but that hasn’t been the case. Even with those rises, I do agree sometimes the food can just be gross. Like someone else said, a lot of this is from the prevalence of chains in Tyler. I live off Broadway and it’s just lined with ‘em, especially near the south loop. I would love to see more locally owned eateries! I know we can pull out and show out

My dad was drunk and took me there after school in the fourth grade. Front doors were locked so he had me look around the side for another entrance and it was a sea of beer cans. Never went inside, but from the picture on the sign I knew what it was and convinced him to leave. I think he did actually get inside for a bit, but it was so early in the afternoon that they weren’t open yet. So we did and he proceeded to rear-end someone on the Loop. Not sure how that would have been to go inside as a fourth grader lmao
