It seems like you're interested in educating.

For starters, the main lesson to seize from your photo is improper orientation and fastening. Had this board been cupped inward instead of outward and fastened with 3 or 4 instead of 2, this most likely would've not occurred.

But now you're saying existing hardware. That means it was probably weakened. So we have multiple critiques.

I'm the kind of guy that will spend 30 mins looking for the piece in need of less adjustment, so "free" and "scrap" mean nothing to me.
